Movies are different from games though, considering Graphics, Sound/voice acting, which are the main production elements of a game, are 2 of the main criteria for game ratings, whereas these days for movies, no one cares if the cgi or music is good, a **** movie is still a **** movie.

I think its kinda narrow minded if you can't even give a game credit where it is due, regardless whether you like it personally or not... For instance, I'm not a huge MW 2 fan, in fact I think its almost a step backwards for gaming, but I won't deny that it has really good multiplayer, and that Infinity Ward put alot of work into it. Just because its not for me, doesn't mean its not a well made game.

I'm not even sure it's factually accurate that Gears has higher production values. I remember there was a lot of talk pre-release that Killzone's budget was through the roof.

Also, how is Modern Warfare 2 a step backwards? Personally I think it does some pretty novel things. Especially with regard to multiplayer.

Probably because devs are going to see a FPS with a strong emphasis on MP as the sure thing to turn a profit.

You mean like I totally did give it credit;

I would. I like Gears and, sure, it reinvented and brought in the whole cover system, but I had just as much fun with KZ2 than I did with either GOW title. So, as far as self-contained quality goes, I put then about evenly

I don't really see what the problem is. I never really bashed GOW or tried to discredit it. I even said I put them on even ground fun-wise.

Nah. There's only room for two or three big competitive multiplayer games per platform. Most developers understand this.

Well when you said

Well, yeah, since the majority of people seem to think Halo and Gears are God's gift to gaming, but I don't subscribe to that nons opinion. That's my guns and I'm sticking to them.

i think you're certainly not giving gears the credit its due by lumping it in with 2 fairly straight forward shooters,

How is Gears not a straight forward shooter? All you do in those games is shoot stuff.

I wasn't lumping it in with Halo or anything, just meant I enjoyed KZ2 as much as both of them despite popularity and general attitude of other gamers and media towards those franchises

Not all you do, there is a F-load of atmospheric exploration, where there arent any enemies for ages, like the underground facility in gears 2, or the krill sections in gears 2, just to develop narrative and expand the story. With MW 2 and Halo its basically just point a to b and kill people on the way.... Not to mention that Gears has a much deeper narrative, and uncharted style dialogue throughout the gameplay to make it feel less like a straight shooter.

I could actually do without the "atmospheric exploration" as you call it. There has to be a better way to move the story forward than forcing the player to walk at a snail's pace for five minutes and listen to some ham-fisted exposition.

Well the slow walking was only really in the first one, they improved that vastly in the second one. And you can hardly fault the quality of Gears 1, when you consider it was the first installment in a brand new franchise and was such a high quality.

You must not have played Uncharted 2.

I got a PS3 for Christmas. I played the first 3 chapters yesterday, then started playing the first and beat it today, then picked up from where I left off in UC2 and I'm already up to chapter 18. It's easily the 3rd best game I own behind Ocarina of Time and Super Mario World.

That's the case with most games, even sandbox games can be broken down to go to A then B.
I think Infinity Wards level linearity is overly obvious compared to other games though. Halo's being nowhere near as obvious.

^^ Still, Halo really didn't have a very strong story during the gameplay... Sure the cutscenes in between levels helped things, but as far as gameplay goes, it was pretty meat and potatoes.

I have to with Batman Arkham Asylum.

My vote goes to something that isn't even on the list. The Beatles Rock Band. I haven't been able to stop playing it since it came out in September.

Sorry, it was on my list originally along with some other music games. But I decided that "music games" was too narrow a category that was taking up more space on the list then what I thought it deserved so I removed them all.

Assassin's Creed 2. Close call, for me. But, for me...it's a two man race between Uncharted 2 and Assassin's Creed 2.

I don't think it's much of a close call beyond those two for the top dog. MW2 sounds like it's there by default. I'm a fan of storytelling, and a good single player campaign. So, I think it's easily reflected in my top games of the year.

The main reason I don't see MW 2 being a good candidate for GOTY, is that it really doesn't feel like they've made many changes or additions to the game structure. Sure it's fun, but it just doesn't feel like it's really broken any new ground, or tried anything different, worthy of a GOTY. It's definitely between AC 2 and Uncharted 2, with best new IP for Batman.
I think AC 2 has the added handicap of having alot of critics who didn't like the first one, whereas UC 1 and 2 were both critically praised. Personally I think AC 2 deserves it more just because it was such a massive improvement over the first, whereas really, we all expected such good things from Naughty Dog anyway, so its almost boring for them to win it lol.

IA. It feels more like an expansion to me and I dont see it as GOTY. It hasnt wowed or impressed me nearly as much as the first one did

I know Treyarch did WaW, but I was really bummed out that Infinity Ward just completely ignored the idea of having a Co-op campaign mode. I think that was a ridiculously big oversight.

It wasnt completely ignored. They originally had plans for it but felt that it ruined the cinematic experience, story and pacing as they werent satisfied with the co op they were developing. They decided to instead focus on delivering the best single player experience possible. Instead of scrapping their work though, what started out as co op ended up being what evolved into the Spec Ops mode which is a decent compromise considering they could have just left that out and solely had just the competetive mode
