My one thought I had about this (and granted I realize it’s part of the Arrowverse), but WB has that DC Universe streaming service, why not develop this show as an exclusive for the service to keep interest in it?

I think DC Universe is going to get folded in under the HBO Max umbrella. But I agree, it could do really well on that streaming service instead of CW.

Honestly? Because I think DCU is already a Dead App Walking. I'm expecting the announcement of its content being folded into HBO Max any day now. *prayer circle for the comics*

Yeah, it did go downhill a little after that Swamp Thing grand opening/grand closing.

Because why make a series on a streaming service with an already established Lois and Clark on a different network altogether when you can just put it there? The shows between Daredevil and Iron Fist weren't put on ABC just because they were also part of the same larger Marvel world as SHIELD and Agent Carter (except not really). Lois and Clark within the Arrowverse are already established, so makes sense to put their show on the CW.

You didn't see Batwoman put on DC Universe even though that could just as easily have been developed for that. Plus, you've got Superboy and Krypto on Titans anyway.

I get what you’re saying but I’m still like damn, they go to all that to make a streaming service and all the content you’d expect to go into it (besides Titans and Doom Patrol) are the Arrowverse shows the CW has. Crazy to me.

I mean, yeah, but it's 2019, and this is network TV. Subtlety ain't what it used to be.

True...it's kind of my fear it'll be too on-the-nose. But it is CW and not HBO.

Anyway, Superman will probably be super "woke" now :funny:

Interesting. I've told you before that I plan on reading that, and I will! I'm genuinely looking forward to it because as you know, I don't have a particularly positive view of the way Batman is portrayed in comics most of the time (hence why he's one of my least favorite DC heroes to read), and it honestly sounds like King and I might be on similar pages in regards to his characterization.

I've now read his Omega Men, Mister Miracle, Vision, his short Supes story from Action Comics 1000 and his work so far on "Up in the Sky," and I honestly severely doubt the guy who wrote all that brilliant stuff (truly some of the best comics I've ever read) could possibly write anything as ~terrible~ as these Batfans are making his run out to be, so I figure it's more likely to be more down to them not agreeing with his views on the character than in the quality of the writing itself. So I look forward to diving in and judging for myself once he finishes the story.

I normally don't recommend skipping issues, but as you tend to be unfazed by spoilers and already have some idea what transpired during the big wedding issue, try to get your hands on Cold Days (issues #51 - #53) and start with that. You will love it! Also the Swamp Thing issue (Batman #23), which feels a lot like a stand-alone story from King. Those comics in particular will tell you everything you want to know about his run, and more importantly, if it's worth your time to go back and dive in with issue #1.

Hmm. Omega Men doesn't ring a bell, but I'm familiar with all the others. I still need to get on Vision, though. I've been meaning to for a while, especially since the upcoming WandaVision has been said to be loosely based on it. And yeah, those "bald bastahs" are just... wrong. lol

While ideally the CW wouldn’t be my choice for where this show would be, but I can’t complain that the best portrayal of the character in a modern adaption is getting his own show. It’s great that a well received variation of the character has the chance to be more than a side-character and tell some interesting stories. The family angle is different and should offer the chance to explore things we haven’t before.

Hope this pans out nicely because Superman deserves something positive in the modern age

Omega Men is a masterpiece that single-handedly managed to make me care about Kyle Rayner, and deftly tackled some pretty heavy geopolitical themes (on an intergalactic scale) to boot. Definitely worth checking out, imo. It was a 12-issue maxi-series so it's a relatively quick read, too.

And I shall be sure to check out Cold Days first.

Oh, it's a Green Lantern story? Not crazy about Rayner myself, but I'll definitely have a look. Thanks for the recommendation!

Sounds good. Note: I made a minor edit to my previous post.

The CW is the #5 most watched channel out there. Even in this age, that still carries way more weight than any streaming service. Even Netflix and Hulu.

The Flash and Superman are A list heroes and they demand an A list audience to justify the effort. The CW is the biggest platform WB owns.

It's...sort of a Green Lantern story. Kyle's a White Lantern at this stage who gives up his ring at the beginning as per the conditions of entering this particular solar system in an attempt to broker peace, so he spends a large portion of the story powerless. He's sort of the POV character that brings the readers into the story, but the Omega Men are actually a group of rather obscure DC cosmic characters originally created by Marv Wolfman like 30+ years ago, and they are front and center of this story. It's King's re-imagining of them and their mythos.

And duly noted RE: the edit to your post!

Lest anyone forget, Superman burst onto the scene in 1938 fighting for labor unions and defending abused women, and took on racism/bigotry in the '40's. He was the original social justice warrior of comics.

Again, yes, but I was referencing the more on-the-nose CW style of "wokeness" you see in shows like Supergirl.

I think they did a great job with that stuff in S4, personally. Tying in The Elite as the "liberal extremist" reaction to the alt-right xenophobia against aliens was a damn near inspired touch, imo.

I have been championing Superman fighting for social justice in the movie threads since forever. I was making a joke about how unsubtle it is on CW. Not that it is wrong, or new etc. Just in the style it is presented.

There is no question that season 4 was the best so far for Supergirl.

It was the first one where it felt like a show tackling an issue rather than someone tackling an issue via a show.

I hope they get Ironhead Studios to make a new costume for him. Like a post-Crisis new look kinda thing.

Most Arrowverse leads get a new costume every season or two. I would expect several different costumes before it's all said and done.

That sounds really interesting. Consider me in.

Knew this would come, but it's good to finally get official word.

I'll watch it because it's Superman but I dislike the CW shows other than the crossover events.
Same here, crossovers only for me. I'll keep my fingers crossed for this and really hope that it's good, but as Prison Mike says...

As long as this show doesn’t try to shove some social message down our throats then I’m good. But with this being the CW...I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.

But it's pretty much never been subtle when it comes to Superman. Superman has almost always gone right to the heart of the issue/s, be it racism, bigotry, bullying, or the need to buy war bonds.

No way they'll have Supergirl and Superman shows airing at the same time.......goodbye Kara Zor El, I hope they remember you :o
