This, specifically, is not sound:

"Add to that the added incentive of trying to get subs for the DCU app, and it seems perfectly obvious to me why they'd renew it with that kind of budget."

The "they" that renewed it are a different "they" than want DCU subs.
But "they" want partnerships with those people who do want DCU subs. As the head of AMC once said in a seminar I was in, "it's all about cultivating relationships with content providers." And it was performing adequately enough by SyFy's standards to take that gamble of renewal considering its final episodes were especially well-received by viewers, so there was a chance it could find a stronger audience via streaming. It didn't. Hence cancellation.

The last thing I want is a formulaic Superman CW show from Berlanti. It is sad that it has come to this for Superman.

I’m not a comic book reader. In my time on forums, however, I’ve followed the recommendation of experts on certain “must read” issues/series. And Kingdom Come was one of them. I guess it was okay (I only read it once). But one thing I found particularly striking: this was down the rabbit hole/drink the Kool-Aid material. KC had a ridiculously large ensemble of superheroes and villains - some famous, but many rather obscure. And there wasn’t much sympathy for the casual fan who wasn’t fully up to speed on these characters (their backstories, etc.) or who was expecting to be gently eased into this surreal, “elseworld-y” scenario. KC, in my opinion, was for advanced/hardcore comic book types. ;nd

So would this translate to a “mainstream” HBO-style miniseries? Maybe... Perhaps a smaller, more pared down version would work (which might have to happen anyway if certain characters - like WW, Batman and Shazam - are embargoed). But if not KC (specifically), it would be interesting to see an “event”/limited DC series on a HBO budget.
Well, I am an advanced comic reader, and while you maybe could switch say Green Arrow for Batman, KC without Shazam would mean an entirely NEW ENDING!

In hindsight, if you guys had to choose between getting this show (Superman and Lois) on the CW versus getting a show on HBO Max with Brandon Routh's KC Superman as the lead, which one would you guys go for?
Honestly? I'm pretty sure KC Superman is going to die. But I'd take say Routh as E2 Superman with Sophia Bush as his Lois over Tyler because they kept pointing out how much weaker etc he was than Supergirl.

Definitely, one that's built up to throughout the whole thing.

its a series about two parents raising a superbaby...of course lois will be important. Also I dunno if they will do it but I want stuff like incredibles 2 in terms of superbaby. Hope they don't age him immediately.

This comment got overlooked but I think it is important to see what is possible to have in terms of storylines. I hope they don't go to hard into the Incredibles/Bewitched angle. Let the baby just be a baby for a few seasons.

Having Clark and Lois live outside Metropolis and Martha comes to live with them.

Lois sort of dealing with being a military kid moving around but wanting to give normalcy to her kid, but going to fail by default of it being half-alien.

I just finished rewatching Superman: Unbound, a really underrated DTV movie that basically adapts Geoff Johns’ Brainiac arc from the comics from years ago. In it theres some well written relationship drama between Lois and Clark that I kept thinking that stuff like this is really good fodder to mine for the tv show. Also...Braniac. It’d be awesome to see a big arc with that villain for a season.

What I’m saying is theres so many story possibilities with this show assuming they do it right.

I'd love to see this in live action on this show.

I really like Superman: Unbound. Love that scene in the swamp.

Its one of the best Superman DTVs out there. Its honestly a great template for a movie. I hope this tv series uses Braniac.

I'd like to think that the producers are aware of the demand to see a proper live action interpretation of Brainiac go up against a fully formed version of Superman.

I mean you can't really count Smallville because Clark wasn't Superman yet and James Marster's version wasn't exactly a faithful adaptation of the character in terms of his appearance and abilities.

I'd love to see Tyler's Superman and Melissa's Supergirl go up against a Brainiac that was akin to the one portrayed on Krypton.

I also hope that they give us a better Metallo for Tyler's Superman to go up against. I mean the makeup used to create his first look was just horrible. His so called chest and stomach area looked so fake that I felt like I was watching an episode from the LnC series.

The Brainiac from the Krypton series has to be used in the Superman and Lois show.

The Metallos and Red Tornado that were used in Crisis On Earth-X were a lot better than the ones in Supergirl.

As much as I like Brainiac maybe they can take what they were developing with that "Metropolis" TV show and use it here and feature more Metropolis-based villains like Toyman, Metallo, Parasite etc. and really build up the world of Metropolis like they do with Gotham.

I just hope that both Metropolis and the Daily Planet get a huge makeover in the actual series compared to when we last saw it in Supergirl (during Kara's fight with Lex).

I love Superman Unbound, it wouldn’t make a phenomenal live action Superman film. I really think they should do this story arc on Superman & Lois. Do a 2 episode crossover with Supergirl or something as I’d like to see the Super Cousins team up on that one.

I wonder if they’re allowed to just use that suit. I know sometimes there are issues like they couldn’t use the Superman suit from Superman Returns because it was made with Legendary Pictures. So because Krypton was Syfy I wonder if a similar problem would arise. Hopefully not, I’d just get that actor back too. Same makeup etc.

I thought Metallo looked fine, remember they don’t have an unlimited budget. I think they should bring in Roger Corben as the new Metallo. Have him after revenge on the Supers for killing his brother.

I don’t see what’s wrong with that look of Metropolis. It looks fine to me.

I just rewatched the first two Lex episodes of Supergirl. Man did John Cryer nail it we really need to see these two square off...

Which Supergirl episodes are the Lex centric ones? I’m going to watch those.

4x15 O Brother Where Art Thou
4x16 The House of L
4x22 A Quest For Peace

I’d also recommend watching Luthors (2x12) in that we meet Lex as a kid. It really builds up the issues with him & Lena and we get plenty of info regarding the backstory between Superman & Lex.

Cryer was surprisingly good. He did the hammy stuff well but was also very good with the more serious aspects of the character

Yeah I love him in the role, when he was cast I was a little like really? But when I saw him he nailed it. In fact he did what I was expecting Eisenberg to do but JE didn’t end up blowing me away.

Thanks @SuperRouth . Yeah, i think once Jon Cryer was cast as Lex the writing was on the wall that they were moving towards a Superman show at some point.

The more I think about this show the more hyped I get. Yes, I’m sure we will get the usual cringey Berlanti-isms that drag the other shows down but this could potentially be a very fun, engaging show to watch if they go full throttle with villain arcs like Braniac, Parasite, Doomsday...Darkseid. Lots of fodder for several seasons worth of tv.

Yeah I’ve been expecting it but not saying it out loud cause I didn’t want to jinx it haha

I really can’t wait, you’ll always find stuff you don’t like in any show so I’m expecting some cringe. But hey that’s part and parcel of just about any show. There’s so much they can do, so much potential I really can’t wait.

I still think Superman and Lois could shoot in LA than Vancouver.

Is it too much to hope for Superman's cape to look like the one on the Routh KC suit? I know I sound like a broken record here but I haaaaaaaaaaate those cape clasps on Tyler's suit. They're so distracting that I still can't decide whether he looks like Superman when I see him.

I don’t mind the cape clasps, they look fine in action. I wouldn’t lose sleep if they got rid of them though. I’ll be interested to see what becomes of the suit when they start the show.

I like the basic design of his suit; I think with a couple minor tweaks it could be damn near perfect. I think I'd be okay with the clasps if they just moved them back a bit, away from the S. The way it looks right now, it's looks more like the Eradicator's Reign of the Supermen suit (which is a design that I love, but not for the "real" Superman). I also think they could improve the belt. I looks... weird. It reminds me of a belt you'd put around yourself on an amusement park ride. But the rest of it looks really good; I like the texture, the S and the colors. I feel like it could look almost as good as the MOS suit if they just make a few changes.
