Superman Reboot Writers Workshop

Jimmy Olsen:

Jimmy Olsen = awesome! Jimmy is the everyman, young, optimistic, enthusiastic, he’s just an all-around great guy. He’s like the little brother you wish you had. He’s smart but kind of geeky at the same time. He’s also adventurous. I can’t think of any actor who has totally nailed this portrayal of jimmy to date, but the all-star superman comic does a good job of showing this kind of jimmy in action (though its often over the top and he’s a bit older , prob mid-twenties). Ideally Jimmy is between 17-19 years old, probably an intern going to college to study photojournalism. He’s quirky, collects star wars paraphernalia. Jimmy should feel like a guy you know or would like to know. He’s definitely likeable and you can see why he and Clark hit it off so well. He’s outgoing while Clark appears to be reserved. He reminds Clark of himself when he was younger, with such an adventurous spirit. Jimmy doesn’t realize just how similar he is to Clark, b/c Clark’s metropolis persona is so dialed back compared to his “real” personality.

Jimmy has a slight crush on Lois but she sees him as a little brother. He also has a crush on Cat Grant though she’s older and much more experienced (not portrayed as over-the-top as she was in Lois and Clark). Jimmy will probably also figure out that superman and Clark are the same person eventually, but respects Clark enough to go along with the secret identity. (Note: The general population assumes superman has no secret identity, without a mask, and appearing anywhere in an instant, most assume he’s superman 24-7. Everyone starts out with this assumption. However if the core daily planet staff has enough interaction with Superman after his initial debut and are regularly around Clark Kent it would be impossible for them to not see the connection. Superman would employ doubles, holograms and other devices so that jimmy, Lois, and Perry would see superman and Clark in the same place at the same time, this would establish just enough doubt in their minds to dismiss the idea of Clark being superman. Although the running gag would be a celebrity look-a-like contest jimmy thinks Clark should enter b/c of resemblance to superman.) Jimmy also comes up with a very scifi-fanboy theory on why Clark and superman look so much alike: superman copied Clark! He tells Clark his theory is based on the Sci-Fi film “Tracker” staring Adrian Paul (from Highlander). The character in the film was an alien of some sort with and inhuman appearance, when he arrives on earth he needs to blend in so adopts the appearance of the first person he sees, in this case a model on a billboard. Jimmy thinks superman may have done something similar to Clark, thus explaining the similar appearance and them both arriving in metropolis around the same time.

Perry White:

Lane Smith from Lois and Clark nailed it. Best version of Perry yet. Cast someone who can bring the same gruff but likable persona to Perry. He nutures all of his reporters to bring out the best in them by pushing them to be the best. He’s an excellent journalist himself and often wishes he was out in the field like lois and clark are. He has plenty of war stories to tell about his younger days. He has a special fondness for jimmy olsen and his enthusiasm. Jimmy is the son perry wishes he had.

Dabyreak_st I like what you put that whole Smallville scen was quite good. Had an idea on the glasses thing though in some of the comics he started wearing them to protect anyone incase his heat vision just set off so maybe he could have showed a small percentage of his powers until Brainiac attacked.

Also this is just me but in the next Superman film I hope they don't kill Jonathan Kent.

Thanks, BH/HHH. That's a good idea about the glasses. I've been back and forth (as you can tell in my rambling :) about killing Pa Kent or not. Keeping him alive would be nice i agree. If they did decide to kill him i'd go it in a 2nd or 3rd movie.

I just read your superman ideas and i really liked how you incorporated some of the animated series in there. You built up a nice arc with lex and the romance of superman and lois. Also i love the idea of bizarro dying and clark viewing him as a brother. Some really great ideas.

I find it easier for me to really think out the characters first then the plot. A lot is still up in the air and i don't know if i have a definite take on lex. Also what are your ideas on clark's metropolis persona? As you can see above i'm a little conflicted :) thanks for the feedback.

If either of us makes it big in Hollywood on the Superman movies we should team up on it :D

Clark's metropolis persona: well I'd like him to be more like STAS version as I think the geeky persona is Chris Reeves gig. I liked what Brandon did with it as he didnt ham it up quite as much. So STAS version is more how I'd like to go, just have him be a great reporter, a little bit tough but different enough so that Lois never thinks hes Superman which I actually think was accomplished in STAS.

Thank you, I am going to flesh out all my ideas as time goes on I even have an idea for a fifth movie in my saga where Superman and President Lex finaly have there big battle with Lex in his powersuit, this would also result in him been impeached but I am struggling to decide on a second villain for that movie.

thanks to your ideas I have fleshed out my Smallville opening abit more.

SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL - Smallville scene redone

The movie starts off in Smallville with Clark Kent aged 17 at High School with his good friend Lana Lang, he is talking to her about these powers he has. We then see Clark scoring the final touch down to win the Smallville crows the state championship. His father comes to pick him up, they have a heart to heart where Clark tells him he wants to just live a normal life but his father tells him he’s here for more than to just win games of football. There is then a tornado warning on the radio as they pull up to the Kent Farm. Jonathan says they’d better get to the storm cellar but Clark says he can help the town, Jonathan understands as Clark super-speeds back into the main town/ We then see a Tornado coming, Clark starts to help out in the town, making sure there isn’t too much damage, he then hears a scream its Lana she is trapped, he goes to help her but they both get caught up in the Tornado. He manages to control himself in the tornado and mamages to grab Lana before she is taken further up into the tornado. When he pulls her free they both crash to the ground, she holds Clark and asks him if he just flew, he says he’s not sure (looking uncertain), he then takes Lana home. When he returns to the Kent farm, the Kent’s are in the storm cellar, he tells them everythings alright and that the tornado has gone. Clark looks beat his clothes are ripped and his face is mucky, his Mum hugs him and thanks god hes alright. The next day Clark awakens to see his Dad Jonathan stood in the field near the storm cellar, he walks walks towards his Dad and asks him whats wrong. Jonathan Kent tells Clark to the enter the storm cellar and reveals under a trap door a rocket ship. Jonathan then explains to Clark that he’s not from around here and that he came here in the rocket ship. He the gives Clark the box that came with the ship and when he touches it he sees a vision of krypton his birth parents Jor-El and Lara appear and explain to him his origins. He storms off but returns when he discovers he can fly, he loves his parents and is no longer upset over the news. We then see Clark saying goodbye to Lana, he says he will always love her and that she is the best friend he has ever had. They hug and you can see in her eyes that she loves him as more than a friend.

I like the fleshed out scene. So you're going the clark loves lana but she doesn’t love him...hmm. I personally like the scenario where she's more interested in clark but either way can work well.

I do think that the success of a film like this would require solid collaboration between multiple writers with varying views on the character. Also perhaps several people who aren't really hard core fans but who know how to write characters and solid dialogue. With a group like that i think you'd have enough checks and balance to make sure everything is covered, that it would appeal to a mass audience, and that the characters are well written with a lot of thought put into their personalities. Also with someone like yourself you'd have a solid plot that makes sense and a fulfilling story arc.

Other ideas i've had:

Clark plays the guitar. Maybe the first time lois comes to his apartment (their meeting up so he can accompany her on a story) she sees the guitar. And while clark is still getting ready she picks it up and starts playing. Clark quietly walks in an starts watching her, a subtle smile crawls over his lips. Lois looks up to see clark watching. They exchange some witty banter; the audience senses a connection between the two. Both lois and clark find themselves a little more curious/interested in the other person being surprised about another common interest.

Something like that.

No I went for shes in love with him but he only sees her as a friend. When he says he loves her its in the way you'd tell a friend you love them, thats why I added the best friend line. I pretty much had this idea from Superman For All Seasons where she thinks hes gonna propose but all he does is tell her of his amazing abilities in my story hes saying goodbye. I would never do Clark doting over Lana that bugged me enough on Smallville :D (a show I love btw)

yeah we as Superman fans could basically give them the template but i couldn't write dialogue for the life of me. If I ever did get to work on a Superman movie I'd love to collaberate with Geoff Johns and/or Bruce Timm cause of me those guys get Superman.

Guitar aye? would certainly be different. But for Clark not to stand out do you think maybe playing the guitar isnt a good move? does it make him stand out a tad more?

Ok, i just read the last section wrong about her seeing him as a friend. I too agree on having her more interested in clark. Smallville ruined me on that one. The For all season references are great, that imho was a fanastic look at superman. And it wasn't because the plot (or luthor's) plot was so great, it was much more character driven storyline. I really enjoyed it.

Good point about the guitar. yeah i don't want him to stand out, but my thought was that with his enhanced senses clark would really enjoy music maybe more so that others. Growing up in the country i could imagine him playing a guitar or having his dad teach him at some point.

A better version of the scene may be, clark comes to lois' appartment. She getting dressed, while he waits. He notices her guitar behind the door. He picks it up and notices it's out of tune. He starts tuning it while lois is talking to him from the other room. He then starts strumming a few cords to make sure it's tuned correctly. Lois pokes her head out looking surprised. She says something about how she thought the guitar needed to be tuned, she asked how he fixed it. He makes some comment about having a pretty good ear.

I don't know something like that. Not an important scene or idea, just thought it could be a nice character moment. REally appreciating the feedback, thanks BH/HHH. I think my posts were so long not sure how many people are gona read them.

Yeah but for Smallville as a continueing tv show had to have the love dynamic the problem was though they kept it going too long and it ended up with him never really getting over her. I'd have liked Clark to have realised she wasnt the one and the too been friends after that with him telling her his secret etc ya know confiding in her but thankfully shes left Smallville and the show is so much better for it :D

Oh my god if he learned in kansas he;ll probably end up playing John Denver songs :D I like that with the guitar you said there, its quirky and quite funny aswell plus its brief. Sometime scenes that arent a massive integral part of the story can add so much to a movie and this could add very well to Lois & Clarks relationship. Yeah I like that. Its like in Smallville shes falen for Clark but is attracted to the Blur and I think that is a great dynamic shes attracted to Superman but falls for Clark.

Yeah likewise mate its great to get feedback and interact. I'm quite enjoying doing my own take on the Superman reboot eventually I might even turn it into a script. Tell you mate if I made it big in hollywood and got Superman I'd bring you into the Supe- team :D

Thanks! Sounds good to me :)

Great point about her being attracted to Superman/the Blur but falling for clark. It seems like a much more interesting way to portray the relationship. Yeah i agree about smallville, much better since lana moved on, but i would've appreciated more closer for her and clark instead of some physical barrier coming bw them. I've enjoyed the show quite a bit but my one big complaint is what they did with lana as a whole, her stories often felt forced.

I'm really enjoying working these ideas for superman and the feedback is great! Keep up the good work on your script i'd love to read the finished version one day, and i'll post if i ever finish mine :)

I love Smallville even though a few things have bugged me over the years (mainly Lana) I've never really hated anything on it. Long may it continue if you ask me :D

Well I'm gonna beef it up as a story first and then the dialogue should just fit right in. Would love to read your story when its done mate. I guess we all have our own ideas on what the perfect Superman origin story is :D

I personally think they should really look at Superman: The Animated Series they nailed it in my opinion.

I've added abit more to my Smallville scene again:

SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL - Smallville scene redone (again :D)

The movie starts off in Smallville with Clark Kent aged 17 at High School with his good friend Lana Lang (she knows about these strange powers he’s been developing), they are talking about it as they walk towards the school. He shouts his son over, one of the guys there Pete Ross (one of Clarks other friends) then shouts “Hey Clark you coming for ice cream”, Clark looks at his Pa and looks back “Sorry Pete I have to go home”. Pete shouts over ok “Clark I’ll see you later”. Clark waves back and walks with his Pa to his truck looking disappointed Clark and Pa Kent have a heart to heart where Clark tells him he wants to just live a normal life but his Pa tells him he’s here for more than to just win games of football and that he is here for a reason. Clark smiles at his Pa. There is then a tornado warning on the radio as they pull up to the Kent Farm. As always nice to read your fleshed out story. I like the scene. My question though is how long you plan on spending in smallville? The reason I ask is that, in reading the above scene it reminds me of specific scenes from the TV show Smallville. The details are a little different but it brings it all back to mind. I think an audience may grow impatient with covering territory that has so recently be covered, with very similar scenes, on Smallville.

The scene you mention in which clark learns to fly for the first time, on the other hand is something no audiences have actually seen yet (I know it was in the cartoon but not in live action yet). You could really make that a very “coming of age” moment for the character that could easily leave the crowd with smiles on their faces. The best version of this that I’ve seen is in the comic “Superman: Secret Identity” which is set in the real world, where a kid named clark kent gets the powers of superman for the first time. The first scene in which he flies is one of my favorites everything from the look on his face to him speeding past trees touching leaves as he goes. Just an amazing moment in the comic. I think something like that translated on screen would be awesome. Just my thoughts.

I actually think for a reboot his pre-life in Smallville is very important to show what his life was like before he was Superman, the reason I added in the tornado scene was so thatt here weould be some action in the beginning this also shows his build towards becoming Superman. I was originally gonna say about 20 minutes but now its probably more like 35 mins. I was even thinking of having abit with a young lex at the beginning to create a he knew him before Metropolis scenario. but wasnt sure as this would extend the smallville scene to 45-50 mins. Once he gets to Metropolis he pretty much debuts as Superman almost straight away so it probably could be an hour or 45-50 mins into the film before he becomes Superman but aslong as what happens before is interesting and builds character I think the audience would like it.

The flying scene I added is reminiscent to Superman the Animated Series where he storms off in a rage and this triggers his flight (which is simialr to what happened with his powers Smallville (if you watch it), emotions are a huge part of his abilities coming through).

I have read Superman: Secret Identity its very good. I think it would make a very interesting movie one day in the future. I also think if a Superman did show up and there was a guy named Clark Kent he'd probably be the last person anyone would suspect cause its too obvious. Another thing I like is how he meets Lois, his mates set it up as a joke but it seems like something that would happen in real-life.

My continution of my trilogy. Some things are inspired by Smallville but what the heck.

Superman Fallen

Clark feels on top of the world when he marries Lois. But from last movies prison break, a villain Toyman escapes and sets his eyes on Superman with a different intention, not to kill Superman but to control. A meteorite found by Star labs which is the red krptonite. Toyman finds out and steals it using deadly toys. Superman is gets affected by the red krptonite and starts taking it like a drug. He becomes very agressive and cuts everyone out of his life lncuding Lois and their marrige.

John Corben who is the new reporter for the Daily Planet. He is getting scoopes left and right. He starts to become a rival of Lois. Meanwhile Toyman manages to get Superman to join him. This time Superman wears a black and red suit (think Godfall). Toyman gets Superman to make him the top mob boss and the most powerful Metroplis man. Fearing Superman might kill him, Toyman finds Rudy Jones, a small time crook and makes scarrs him into Parasite using dangerous chemicals as he becomes Parasite

People of Metropolis start to hate Supeman as he becomes a villain and working for Toyman. Superman travels to the Fortess of Solitude where Jor-El teaches and shows who he really is. The effect of the red kryptonite wears off. Superman confronts Toyman but Toyman orders Parasite to steal his energy and he does. Superman weakned goes to the meteor site of the Red krptonite and find the green one. He confronts Parasite and shows him the green Krptonite and Parasite goes weaker gives his powers to Superman.

But Parasite absorbs energy of a near by Power Plant and they both fight. Superman wins and Superman confronts Toyman. Toyman now wanted to kill Superman weakens him with green kryptonite. Lois saves Superman by stabbing Toyman in the leg adn throws the crane which contained the green krptonite. Superman is back and Toyman gets arrested.Superman leaves avoiding the cops. Toyman manages to escape and blow up the cop cars. He is now wanted. In the end, the story of the Toyman and Parasite is wrtten by John Corben first as he becomes the top reporter. Clark visits Lois in her apartment and have a talk.

NEXT UP: Superman Legends

Sorry for any spelling errors.

I’m really enjoying reading your stories Orb. You’ve done a nice job introducing a variety of Superman’s Rogues which is great. Also I’m impressed with the use of Toyman, he’s a villain I wasn’t sure would work in a movie, but I like what you’ve done. Nice job, keep the stories coming J

BH/HHH you make some good points. I’ve been curious about how you plan on re-introducing Superman for the first time in public. I personally am stuck on this one. The first scene I described in detail all takes place before the opening credits, similar to the way star trek opened up with a bang. After that I’m not sure how to fast forward the time, etc. I’ve really liked your ideas and like to know how you plan on introducing the audience to lois, clark, and the rest of the crew for the first time.

I already wrote that in, Superman makes his debut trying to stop Corben and the thieves from stealing the powersuit and has to save the train when Corben nukes the tracks to get Supes off his tail. Its very much what they did with STAS but I changed the plane to a train as the plane was already done in SR. I will at somepoint write the rest of the story points down Lois is introduced to Clark in the DP by Perry White (similar to Superman the movie/STAS). I pretty much took STAS as my main inspiration as I feel they nailed Superman.

Sounds good, i'll have to go back a re-read your ealier posts. I agree the animated series pretty much nailed it from start to finish on how to do a solid superman film.

I'm gonna really rework it soon anyway I can fill in all the blanks. Not sure about actually doing a script but i want something there so that the story is complete.

Just re-read it, that's some really cool/exciting stuff. Nice job. Also i forgot one scene i really like is the one in which it looks like supes and lois are going to fly together then he's called away to the museum. Then how you end the movie with her and supes flying. That's just awesome. It's so cool that you hint at a homage but to the old film but then don't use it until the end. I think that would really resonate with an audience. I've said it before but you've got some great stuff :)

Thanks again ha ha. I thought with those two flying it would almost be like wanting them to get together and this first movie is about the attraction Lois has towards Superman and vice versa. I thought if we hold off until the end its like a payoff to those two without throwing them together in the first movie. TBH I wouldnt get them together until the start of the third movie so that with my death of storyline it would affect her even more.

Thanks dude.

I have rewritten the Smallville scene once again I basically had Clark leave 2 years after the tornado so that bhe will be officially an adult, this is so he can travel the world, learn new languages and cultures (I'm not gonna show any of his travels though just maybe show a picture book that Martha has of all the snaps he's taken on his travels). This way when he goes to Metropolis he will be 25 (the age for Superman for me)

Opening Credits - This a comic book drawing sequence with drawings of Krypton and Jor-El and Lara sending Kal-El to earth. The final image we see is of the Kent’s holding baby Kal-El.

Then the movie starts off in Smallville with Clark Kent aged 16 at High School with his good friend Lana Lang (she knows about these strange powers he’s been developing), they are talking about it as they walk towards the school. He then tells her he’s nervous about the final football game of the season saying he doesn’t want to get too excited and accidentally hurt someone. Lana consoles him and tells him he’ll do fine before kissing him on the cheek. We then see Clark scoring the final touch down to win the Smallville crows the state championship. He shouts his son over, one of the guys there Pete Ross (one of Clarks other friends) then shouts “Hey Clark you coming for ice cream”, Clark looks at his Pa and looks back “Sorry Pete I have to go home”. Pete shouts over “OK Clark I’ll see you later”. Jonathan says they’d better get to the storm cellar but Clark says he can help the town, Jonathan understands as Clark super-speeds back into the main town. We then see a Tornado coming, Clark starts to help out in the town, making sure there isn’t too much damage, he then hears a scream its Lana she is trapped, he goes to help her but they both get caught up in the Tornado. He manages to control himself in the tornado and manages to grab Lana before she is taken further up into the tornado. When he pulls her free they both crash to the ground, she holds Clark and asks him if he just flew, he says he’s not sure (looking uncertain), he then takes Lana home. When he returns to the Kent farm, the Kent’s are in the storm cellar, he tells them everything’s alright and that the tornado has gone. Clark looks beat his clothes are ripped and his face is mucky, his Mum hugs him and thanks god he’s alright. The next day Clark awakens to see his Dad Jonathan stood in the field near the storm cellar, he walks towards his Dad and asks him what’s wrong. Jonathan Kent tells Clark to enter the storm cellar and reveals under a trap door a rocket ship. Clark says he’s seen all of Smallville and the tornado has caused so much damage, he asks his parents what do we do now. Pa Kent puts his arm around Clark and tells him we help rebuild. We then fast forward 2 years and we see Clark looking at the fields on the farm. Lana walks over and says she can’t believe it has been a year since the tornado. Clark agrees but says he has something to tell Lana. He says now that Smallville is back to normal he can’t put his destiny on hold any longer. Lana’s asks him what he means. He tells her he is leaving Smallville as he has some things he has to discover. Lana wants to know what things but Clark says he doesn’t know that himself just that he has to use his abilities to help the world not just Smallville. Lana asks him where he’s planning on going. He says he’s going to see the world, learn about different cultures etc. Her eyes well up as she asks if he’ll be back and he says someday. Clark then tells her he will always love her and that she is the best friend he has ever had. They hug and you can see in her eyes that she loves him as more than just a friend.
