I don't now if WB screwed up. Honestly, Superman Returns created a paradox of sorts.
If you let a director have control, you'll end up having a classic like Batman Begins. If you let a studio have control, you'll have X3. Now, Superman Returns beat expectations, then it would fall into the first category. SInce it didn't, now it kinda ruined that argument, and from the looks of it, now WB is slowly trying to control Superman.
I disagree to some extent. WB letting a Nolan have control of BB isn't what made it a classic and a success, it was WB choosing to give total control to a director who had the correct vision in terms of the character and respect and understanding of the source material.
I think ten minutes listening to Singer's idea was enough to say sorry but that is not the direction we want to go with the new Superman franchise.
Giving a director total control is definitely the right thing to do...especially with this genre but you have to make sure you as a studio head agree with the vision and with the methodology of that director and realize there is a legion of fans that are very knowledge about the history of the character.
Did you know that Nolan consulted DC comics before he began writing, then brought on board Goyer, an Batman and comic expert to help him, and when the script was completed, he again consulted DC comics for them to critique the script to make sure it was worthy? WHY DIDN'T SINGER DO THIS? Did he think that Donner invented Superman?
Nolan went out of his way to make sure this movie respected both the source material however at the same time not being restricted by that same material.
WB should make that a required procedure for any director doing one of their comic book properties.
Which sucks.
I mean, why blame WB if they had faith in an established filmmaker like Singer? Everyone screws up in their career: Speilberg, David Lynch, and hell even David Fincher (Panic Room, Alien 3)
Was I a fan of Superman Returns? Not really. But I'm putting faith into Singer again. I'm fair.
On the other hand, the guy who made Ghost Rider...that's a different story..
