Superman Reboot Writers Workshop

  • Nature/Nurture - Superman does what he does because of how he was raised, not because of his blood.

Well, since the the (E)l-family is one of the Gloriest from Krypton, with famous writers, scientists... that theme feels a little bit unnecessary (even when we keep the Guardians of the Universe's role aside).

"Nurture" is a little bit overrated. behavioural patterns are usually bequeathed.

Edit: Basically what I was trying to say: Kents=good people; El's=good people. So how can explore such a theme then?

I'd like to see whether superman can truelly make as much of a difference than he believes...especially being an outsider...

Things I'd like to see...
1. Superman punch something
2. Good dialogue between Lois and Clark
3. Lex being evil
4. A very imposing threat that isn't kryptonite

I don't need a reboot. Superman doesn't need a reboot. It can very, very easily be sequaled, if only WB had the guts to stick with their decision to do SR as the first of a franchise.

But WB were always a coward studio.

I like that Superman and Clark are already established. While first arriving in Metropolis, a terrifying alien figure from Krypton appears. This new villain claims Earth is a corrupt and sinful world which needs to be cleansed. Likely a rogue being from Krypton, Apocalypse, or elsewhere, this creature is a religious fanatic based on spreading his radical vision of order across the universe. He releases an army of powerful super powered beings who wreak across the world and begin a genocide of mankind. Superman is all who can oppose them, however he can only do so much as he is vastly outnumbered. His only hope is to go after the estranged leader bent on eliminating all life on Earth.

Deception: Brainiac arrives on Earth promising good will and salvation for mankind, while secretly intending to become global dictator temporarily in order to collect all information possible and then destroy the planet.

I'd like to see Superman deciding the limit to his role in society. He should spend the entire movie coming up with the framework for what he is going to mean to humanity. He should also make a few mistakes along the way...he doesn't just pop into existence with preconceived notions of right and wrong, and how to bring justice. He doesn't immediately know what justice is. He has to find it for himself, with a little bit of trial and error involved. A few failures, to give him conflict and eventually lead him to the role that he discovers in the end.

The whole xenophobia deal with Luthor could play perfectly into that. He'd be the one who poses the idea that eventually Superman will become judge, jury, and executioner. For most of the movie he'll have lots of ammunition but in the very end Superman will prove him wrong.

I guess a deeper exploration of "truth and justice" is what I'm getting at. What is truth, and what is justice?

i tried to do a storyboard to the idea but i keep trying to put too much detail in it and never getting anywhere

anyway

This is my intro for the film

The movie opens in space and we see a side on shot of the massive roaring red sun and the little blue planet next to it

the camera rotates around the sun so we get an upclose look at its power, the camera then comes around so it looks like this
canada02_CBond-OD_MT_000_00.jpg

Then the sun explodes and engulfs the planet like it was nothing

as the flames come towards the screen the camera starts to pull out and the we then see we are are in the eye of superman who is holding some sort of massive dangerous object and is about to use his heat vision

please tell me that made sense

Yes, perfect sense, and I like it.

Superman - All new original take on the origin with story elements inspired by John Bryne's "Man of Steel" and Mark Waid's "Superman: Birthright."

Man of Steel - After thwarting Luthor's plans to make Superman look like an alien invader, a new hero, or so it seems, makes his way onto the scene named Metallo. This secret creation of Luthor turns rouge when he is betrayed by his creator and the movie culminates in an epic battle between Superman and Metallo in the streets of the Suicide Slums.

Superman: Legacy - Luthor makes contact with a cybernetic alien life form known that calls itself Brainiac that goes under the guise of wanting to gain information on Earth. Secretly it wishes to destroy the planet after gaining it's vital information. When Brainiac discovers that the last kryptonian in the universe resides on Earth, it's destructive plans focus solely on eliminating Superman from existence to achieve it's goal of becoming the ultimate life form in the Universe. Superman must maintain being the last living legacy of his home world by destroying Brainiac once and for all.

i think we talked about this kind of scene in 2006.
this owuld be incredible.

I like the idea of also seeing the world's reaction to a man who can fly and do all these incredible things on top of the fact of not being afraid to show his face to the public. This brings about the idea that no one would wonder if he had a secret identity and we might see a more welcomed reaction from people in Metropolis rather than the split decision of Gotham towards Batman.

Since Singer, Harris and Dougherty are out now...

I would think someone should be able to land the MOS script treatment that was turned down by WB's multiple times.

I also would like to see what Chris McQuarrie take might have been?

I like this form of symbolism.

Because Warner Brothers won't

I thought of a teaser trailer that's more of a message in that it says, "The boy scout is back and better than ever" I thought of something reminiscent of the first Cloverfield teaser but it kinda turned out cheesy

TEASER

Camera pans over the city skyline, it slows to a crawl and suddenly, a woman's scream is heard. We zoom down to street level as we see the woman running from an unseen force, the camera turns to follow her and we realize we are actually chasing her through the eyes of something...
A targeting reticule appears, a small scan of the woman through the corner of it's eye. A name above her head... Lois Lane... The woman trips and falls, it targets her and fires of a small missile (Iron Man style... yes I know it's lame. But the movie won't be like this). A blur appears before her as the missile hits. Black smoke envelops the street, through the smoke we see the vague shape of a man. The shape disperses, something hits us...
Shot of a street from the side as the thing flies across and smashes into a car. Fade out, a slow overture plays, a familiar tune as the familiar "S" shield fades in. Fade out and the text "YOU WILL BELIEVE..." appears. END

The thing/it that was chasing Lois is METALLO. Forshadowy...
YOU WILL BELIEVE... (That a man can fly) and the tune is obviously the Williams Theme... just for that classic feel

MOVIE

The film begins on an alien planet. As the camera zooms in we see a beautiful bustling Metropolis (ha!) with tall spires and large alien bulidings that stretch out to infinity. The city itself is filled with lush greens suggesting that the inhabitants live WITH nature and not AGAINST it. Strange long tubes appear to run along the ground suggesting a public transport system of sorts. (And not a single crystal in sight). We travel to the cental bulilind where sserveall ep9ople in long red/black robes seem to be walking in and out of. Gaurds are staingioned at the main fdoors wearing what appears to be blue armor with a red "S" like symbol engraved into it, wielding strange weapons. We travel inside and see that a council is in session. A single man stands before seven of his peers. He appers to be pleading with them.

One of the council men, a tired old bird speaks, "Jor-El! You are willing to risk the safety of our entire civilization just because of some strange readings you obtained from our red sun. This is foolishness!"
Jor-El (Viggo Mortensen) continues to plead, feeling exasperated, "You must understand. Lately, the frequency of sun flares have increased exponentialy. It's mass is growing exponentially as we speak and if we do not act now, our plane will soon we engulfed by it's gravitational pull."
The old man speaks, "And how do you suggest we act? How do you plan to evacuate, a planet of billions?"
Jor-El nervously replies, "We can take the the help of the gaurdians, we could relocate to one of the many uninhabited planets that are currently under Thanagarian rule. It would be termporary and i'm sure they would not mind."

Sounds of outrage fill the council. The old man is now furious, "Have you gone mad? The Gaurdians of Oa and their so called Green Lanterns can barely maintain order within themsleves. And we proud, democratic Kryptonians would never side with those filthy fasict birdmen of Thanagar."
All is quiet, suddenly a deep voice is heard in, "Actually Jor-El is about half right" Jor-El frowns as a hologram materialises out of thin air, "Brainiac" he states with a hint of hatred in his voice. One of the old men ask, "What do you mean?"

Brainiac (James Masters) replies, "There has been a slight inscrease in the frequency of sun flares but I'm sure that if a scientist such as Jor-El would have cared to do a little more research, he would have found that this is a common occurence and will subside soon enough." The council men ask Jor-El to respond. He does, "Would you rather believe a scientist who has time and time again made signifcant contributions to the people of Krypton or a computer?" Brainiac interuppts, "Now now Jor-El, you could easily have been mistaken. Whereas I am the most sophiscaticated artificial intelligence in the universe developed for the sole purpose of protecting this planet from both terrestial and extra-terrestial dangers."

Jor-El balls his fists, turns around and leaves. The so called councilmen were mere figureheads, they were so dependant on Brainiac that they could no longer think for themselves. But he knew what he had to do, his son. He would not allow his infant son to be the victim of the fools in the seats of the council

Your idea for a teaser is awesome and it seems to do what a teaser is meant to do tease.

And I know the dialogue is a bit too comic booky
I'm happy you still liked it though

Jor-El returns home and discusses all that happened with his wife Lara. His wife tries to talk him out of it, "Jor-El, I respect you and your work. But isn't there the slightest possibility that you could be wrong. Don't take this as an insult, just think about it. Maybe you made a slight miscalculation.. "
Jor-El replies, "I wish I was wrong. I have been studying this problem since day one. To make matters worse Brainiac was playing Devil's Advocate with me. He was the one who told me that a disaster was inevitable but at the council, he told the councilmen exactly what they wanted to hear."
She looks at her year old son playing with his toys, a tear rolls down her cheek as she asks him, "How long have we got?"
Jor-El replies, "One month. Lara... the ship is big enough for both of you... if you want to..."

She cuts him off, she could not abandon her husband like this. She would share his burden of the ultimate sacrifice. Jor-El begins preparing. The scene cuts to almost a month later as Lara and Jor-El place their son in a space ship (it looks like the one from TAS). In the midst of all this, there are periodic quakes as the people get more and more nervous. Just as the the space ship flies off... all hell breaks loose. From space we see that the planet is torn asunder as the ship carrying the last son of Krypton frees itself from the gravitational pull and disappears into deep space.

We see the infant Kal-El and hear Jor-El's voice once more. "My son. I am sending you to an alien world, far away from our doomed civilization in the hope that you can grow up to have a normal life. Even though you are not one of them, I hope that they can accept you for what you are. Discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son.. Kal-El"

The ship disappears in a brilliant flash of light as we here the ringing of a school bell and a young woman's voice, "Hey Clark! Wake up!"
We see a young man (Brandon Routh... people said he was too young :cwink:)
lift his head sleepily from the table as he tries to take in his surroundings. An empty college classroom. "Lana? Where is everybody?"
The woman (Zhang Ziyi... I always preferred Lana to be Asian) replies, "That's you Clark, lost in our own world yet somehow the class topper. Today was our last day, everybody left because it has been half an hour since class ended and tomorrow's our graduation).

Clark and Lana talk about future prospects as they walk out of the institution. Clark talks about how he wants to be reporter, travel the world and all that while Lana talks about a potential dream job offer for her at S.T.A.R Labs in Metropolis. Clark is undecided but suddenly he stops in his tracks. He hears something and runs off as Lana gives chase. Somehow he manages to outrun her. She screams for him to stop. We come to a burning small apartment building with a small child screaming for help with her parents pleading with the firemen to save her. The local firemen try to stop Clark but he rushes inside just as Lana manages to reach the scene. Inside, we can clearly see fire enveloping every square inch of the building as Clark tries to avoid the blaze. We clearly see a small bit of his trousers catch on fire but this does not faze him. He hears the child screaming from behind a door and easily busts it down. Just as he grabs the child, the roof caves in. He tries to shield her as the building falls on him.

Clark shrugs it off, he rushes down the stairs at superhuman speed with the building collapsing around him. Outside, it appears the building is about to collapse any moment with Lana trying to hold back her tears. Suddenly, Clark bursts out of the building his shirt almost torn off and portions of his trousers burnt. The firemen are shocked that he has received no burn injuries except a few red patches. The family thanks him. Lana walks up and slaps him, "Are you crazy? You could have died!!"
Clark feels exasperated, adrenaline pumping through his body. He apologies saying that he felt he needed to.

The scene cuts to the Kent's farm as his family discusses Clark's heroic act. His mother Martha (no idea) tells Clark how she always warned him of showing off his gifts when others were around while his father Thomas gives him a pat on the back for a job well done. The topic changes to Clark's future when his mother provides him a bit of news, "Clark. Do you remember Lionel Luthor (Don't moan... he's now in the comics too)?"
Clark replies, "The man who wanted to buy land from us for his factory? Lex's dad? (Boo Hoo... Clark new Lex in Birthright too.. so ha!)
His mother continues, "Exactly, he contacted us today. He always took interest in you and asked whether you would be interested in working for LexCorp. It's a high paying job and in Metropolis, the city of tomorrow. Dream opportunity"
Clark wasn't interested and made it clear. His parents of course respected his decision.

I hope to make it clear that I'm going for the Batman Begins approach of a slow buildup and you don't see Batman/Superman until halfway through the movie

this is really cool!...If the next supes movie is like this, its could truely be another classic

sounds pretty cool. I would leave out the thing about having room for lara and kal in the capsule. NO mother would leave her son for her husband, at least I know my wife wouldn't. perhaps the size of the capsule is only enough to house the baby making it "stealthy" enough for braniac not to detect it. Just sayin' but the story seems pretty cool!!! Much better than singer and company:woot:

Sorry, accidentally hit the post button before I was finished with the title.

Anyway, I'd like to see a World's Finest movie instead of a Justice League. Maybe its my lack of faith in WB putting out a pleasing product, or perhaps its the general draw of Superman and Batman working together. There's so much you could work with in these characters that would otherwise be drowned by screen time in a JL installment. Both are heroes, but one pushes and bends the rules, while the others holds them in the highest regard. One is a charismatic champion who never fails to believe in the human spirit, whereas the is loner who has little trust in the humanity of most others. I've always been fascinated with how Superman and Batman interact and learn from each other, especially when their ideals clash. A prospect that I see could draw many into the movie theaters, provided it's done right. With a JL film, you have to give everyone screen presence and I just don't see them handling such a unique relationship very well.

So what do you think? If you could only choose one, which would it be. Justice League would no doubt have the best special effects in the battle scenes, but would it be the most satisfying experience overall? This is also the same fear I have with the Avengers movie.

I wouldn't put money on one happening - at least not with Bale's Batman.

Apparently it was part of the plan, according to Robinov and they decided to ditch the idea after deciding to revamp Superman for the next film.

Maybe if the next film is a success, they'll put it back on the table.

I'm hoping the next \S/ film is the unrealistic Superman grounded in the real world (similar to Nolan's) so the films sync up better. Perhaps that's what they meant by going dark like Nolan's Batman.
