Superman Returns Superman Returns lead nominations for the Saturn Awards!

I accused Showtime of nothing. In fact, he is the one voice of reason on these boards. If anything, I am accusing Pickle-El.

I've already fielded that question.

Again have you read the rules? Singer has power over the nominations. During the nomination process as a committee chair his vote is an incredibly powerful one. Yet you fail to acknowledge that. During the regular voting to decide the winner, his vote is the same as everyone elses'.

If he can decide for his movie to be nominated, that would completely ridicule the award and turn them to a joke. Which, as far as I know, they aren´t. If Singer is so powerful, how come his good friend and respected actor Kevin Spacey didn´t get a nomination?

But even so, let´s consider for a moment that you´re right and Singer has all this power you´re attibuting to him. Even so, why wouldn´t Superman Returns get important nominations for an award dedicated to its category of movies, other than the fact that you and some fanboys don´t want to accept the notion that many people think it deserves it?

Did it get bad reviews? No, it got mostly positive reviews, it was one of the best-reviewed wide genre releases of the year. Was it a terrible box office failure? No, production costs aside, a movie that makes 200m in the USA territory and almost 400m can´t be considered a bomb. Is it trashed in the most popular polls about the big movies of the year? No, in fact it has good grades in the most popular movie sites. It´s not a very different situation from other movies that significant nominations in the past, like Batman Begins, King Kong, etc. I have as much or more elements to contest the nominations for X-Men The Last Stand, which had mixed reviews and is also disliked by a portion of the fans, maybe a larger one than the one that dislikes SR, even though I haven´t heard of Ratner having "clout" with them. Regardless of Singer´s power or not, there´s no reason to think it wouldn´t get important nominations.

What happened here? I thought we decided that everybody is allowed to have an opinion whether it be positive or negative. Let's not have a decent thread closed or merged when it is a perfect opportunity for tasteful debate.

To imply a movie is getting nominations cuz the director influences the board is not an opinion, it´s an accusation.

Again, I've already addressed all of this. The matter at hand is the Saturn Awards.

I don't know if Matt was making an accusation, I do think he was insinuating that Singer has some clout at the Saturn Awards which might have led to the large amount of nominations.

I believe that Returns stands on its own, and any award that it wins at the Saturn Awards is deserved despite Singer's place on the commitee.

Everybody in Hollywood has connections and those in Hollywood use the connections to their advantage. Would it suprise me if I found out Singers connections helped SR with nominations? No. Do I think this is the case? No.

Exactly. I am not saying Singer rigged the awards, I am not saying he extorted voters. I am saying he used his position and clout to ensure such a numerous ammount of nominations. I don't get why it is being treated as if I said he shot Kennedy. All anyone would have to do is read the committee directors of the Saturn Awards and their nomination process (which you were kindly enough to provide a page back) to see that it is not so far fetched.

To imply the guy´s position ensured his nominations is pretty much the same as to say he rigged the process. Lobbying and having "clout" per se don´t mean anything as it´s known that in these awards a lot of people lobby hard and try to be influential in various ways to get nominations. But still, it´s not supposed to "ensure" anything, otherwise it kills any credibility of the process. You didn´t mean to accuse him, fine, but you did imply in that direction.

Are these awards televised anywhere? Sci Fi Network perhaps? I'd really like to see them.

There is a ceremony, I remember seeing Goyer and Nolan giving interviews after receiving them, but I dunno if it airs on USA TV, I don´t get Sci-Fi channel.

Hmmm...I'll have to look into it. It might only have reports from the show and what not.

A lot of people find the Oscar´s and Golden Globe´s choices weird too. Because X3 or SOAP is on the list, it invalidates the fact Children Of Men, V For Vendetta, Casino Royale and The Prestige are there too?
No, absolutely not. It just looks funny to see so many good actors and movies in the same category with total duds like SoaP or X3. They're maybe fun movies but not any kind of award material.
If this academy really votes like rational human beings, the movies you mentioned and actors like Portman will get the awards.

I must admit i am surprised X3 has been nominated for anything with the word "Best" in the title except "Best ****-up."
