Syfy's Helix - from BSG's Ronald D. Moore

I think my biggest complaint about the pilot was Hiroyuki Sanada. He was so lifeless. He always intrigues me and I love watching him on screen but here you could replace him with a plank and you'd not miss much. I know it's not him. It's the writing or directing, but they wasted him in the pilot.

unless there is a story reason for him to be like that.

He doesn't seem like an actor to take a part without some meat to it.

jeez, SyFy's goin' nuts today rerunning it over and over and over...

Loved the first two episodes!

The promo that aired during this for Dominion looked good. I like Legion, for the plot alone mainly, so I'll check it out

The first 3 eps were ok despite the odd musical choices, white screen fade editing and the clunky back-story exposition for some of the characters. The atmosphere was the key element and The Rocketeer was holding it down with his two Ladies!

I am curious if Sanada just has a stalker book on Jules or if there will be a familial connection.

I didn't know they'd put the third one up online so I'll have to watch it. The first two are okay. It has a very Alien/Outbreak/The Thing vibe going for it. Without all the blood and nastiness (so far).

I didn't like the music on the show which is ubiquitous and doesn't seem to fit with the overall tone of the show.

The large lady scientist isn't a good actress.

Hiroyuki Sanada is a great actor but he has been muted so far. Hopefully Sanada gets more to do in the next few episodes.

I thought the music not fitting the mood made it creepier

The music is an interesting choice. It's very out of context with what's going on. Though I don't get the hate on Dr. Boyle (large lady scientist). Her accent is exaggerated and kind of annoying but I've seen other characters get away with worse.

It's slow-moving sci-fi, but not as slow paced as I've seen some AMC shows be. It's mysterious and with some good horror moments and creepy atmosphere, and the characters don't outshine the plot...it doesn't seem to yet be that type of show. It's not that the plot overwhelmingly drives the characters (and when that happens, bad quality can happen like Under The Dome where it drives the characters into utter stupidity.) There's a little of that here with the way some characters behave but it hasn't derailed into total nonsense...yet. I like good horror that understands things like tension and quiet moments and there's plenty of that here.

I liked the episodes I saw enough to continue to watch. I've read some others with some reservations about how they can sustain the setting for more than a miniseries or 13 episodes, and that's a valid point. But they can always shift locations with a renewal and a bigger budget if it happens. We'll just all have to wait. Or move on if you don't like it.
Thank you! I decided to check this out and it was okay. I wasn't all that thrilled tbh. I just watched what was aired on SyFy.

Meh...I'll check this out on demand. It may be better to binge watch.

Syfy’s Thriller ‘Helix’ Soft In Debut
By DOMINIC PATTEN

A killer virus being barely contained in the Arctic was the launch off point for Syfy’s new thriller series on Friday. While that’s the premise of the series, Helix wasn’t exactly bubonic with viewers for its premiere last week. Despite a strong Comic-Con presence last summer and some hefty promotion, the 90-minute Jeffrey Reiner-directed debut episode garnered just 1.8 million viewers at 10 PM on January 10. With a 0.6 rating, Helix pulled in 734,000 viewers in among adults 18-49 and 893,000 among the 25-54 demo. That’s a far cry from the 2.7 million total viewers that the cable and sat channel drew for Defiance when that debuted on April 15, 2013. That two-hour Monday opener had 1.3 million among the 18-49 and 1.4 million among adults 25-54. That’s Syfy’s top total viewers and 25-54 performances since 2009’s Warehouse 13. With a 2.5 household rating, Warehouse 13 had 3.5 million viewers with 1.7 million among adults 25-54 and 1.3 million among adults 18-49 to be the third best viewership debut for any Syfy series behind 2004’s Stargate Atlantis (4.2 million) and 2006’s Eureka (4.1 million). Helix, which features ex-The Killing star Billy Campbell as its emotionally troubled CDC pathologist lead, was picked up for a 13-episode straight to series order last March. In his return to Syfoy, Battlestar Galactica developer/EP Ronald D. Moore is producing Helix with showrunner Steven Maeda and Lynda Obst. Writer Cameron Porsandeh is co-exec producing the series.
Disappointing. But, really, for Syfy, I don't think it's that bad.

Finally was able to watch the Pilot and the 2nd Episode for this show. Overall it started off slow and then it picked up. i'll probably keep watching but I still have a lot of TV to catch up on this week before I watch the 3rd Episode.

So much for the big gal. I may be in the minority, but she was growing on me.

I'm confused about army boy's motives.

army boy works for people who the lead scientist is also working for...I think his job is to collect the 'thing' that was being sold and to 'clean up' the base....and by clean up I mean murder every one who knows anything about the 'thing'

All I know is the young doctor is adorable.

Tonight's was an interesting episode. Think I'm going to have to watch it twice.

Well, I guess that somewhat explains the silver eyes.

I didn't know that the actress that played Kat in BSG was going to be in the this.
