The Dark Knight TDK Casting Sides

So, I´ve had more time to think this over and put all my thoughts together, and this is what I´m thinking...

- On it being "cliché", "not innovative or fresh": Being fresh isn´t only about completely redefining cinema as we know (we´re lucky if we can say there were two movies that got even close to that in the last two decades). There are different ways of being fresh. One of them is mixing different genres that usually don´t mix. When Batman 89 did thirties retro noir, that in itself was nothing new, but mixing it with the superhero/comic book genre was. What BB hinted at and TDK is going full on is mixing the seuperhero genre with the gritty dramas of the seventies, like French Connection or Dog Day Afternoon, and now adding in a Se7en-like serial killer drama (given the take on Joker they´re going for). In that sense, it´s okay that it uses typical elements of these genres, as it was okay for B89 to use elements from old gangster movies, it´s how all those different elements are combined together in the final product that will make it fresh (again, a recurring theme here, not judge the forest for some trees).

- On it being "average", "plain": Making the right dialogue isn´t always about giving your character the witty zingers. In some moments, the best way to say things or to keep the story moving is stand back, restrain yourself and just be straight to the point. Embellishment can become distracting, can become overwriting. A good example is Kevin Smith, who admittedly tends to wrap his movies around the witty banter between his characters because that´s his strongest skill. But sometimes it´s not the one that serves the story. Sometimes an explective gets the job done better than a Shakesperian sonnet.

Fock yeah! and you make a good point on chopping genres.

Otherwise, it's silly to keep debating the quality of the sides...

they're from the first draft - the dialogue is basically a set of placeholders outlining the bare minimum each character needs to express. The particular phrasing and the finer details of interaction will never be final until Nolan says 'cut AND PRINT' .

I love how ultimatefan always lives up to his title. :word:

It's turning into a regular love-fest around here. Where's the hate, people?
Many thanks to Antonello Blueberry for reposting the sides, I had foolishly failed to save the Imageshack docs when Miranda, our Queen and Sovereign, originally posted them.
For the most part, I like the dialogue. Overall, I love the ideas that are present in them, and can't wait to see how they're developed.

I still hate Big Bad Harv  :cmad:

The joke to the Ferry Situation is that the person who presses the button blows up there boat...not the other boat. That would be funny.

Haha.

See.

I didn't really get the whole ferry part. It's probably because a few pages are missing and we're not seeing everything in context, but I don't know, I was kinda confused as to what was going on.

From what I gather, there are two ferries rigged with bombs, one is a prisoner transport, the other is a passenger ferry. They each have buttons that will blow up the other boat. If you press your button and blow up the other ferry, you’ll live, if they blow you up, they live, and if nobody presses anything both ferries explode. To survive you essentially have to kill a boatload of people.

Thanks a lot Nepenthes, Seen, and of course our dear Miranda!

And the joke...is that if you press the button you are willing to kill and thus a criminal, you deserve to die and thus your boat blows up instead of the other one. You essentially kill yourself. The irony and the joke is that the civilians believe they are justified in doing it because the others are criminals and yet, by becoming criminals themselves, they deserve to die. If the criminals are willing to do it, they're just reinforcing their nature.

It is sort of funny in a sick way.

It would be a good twist

Ah, thanks. I just read it over again and that does seem to be the case. Are we assuming this is the work of the Joker? Which leads to...

Presumption or not, I like the sound of it. A bit like Jigsaw of the SAW series, but just as long as Joker isn't on a TV asking, "do you want to play a game?", it's definitely something I can see him laughing ecstatically about. :oldrazz:

I still think, and another BOFer discussed this with me last night...

I could see the Ferry thing being a Two-face plot right at the cliff hanger ending.

Think about it, one good innocent boat, another bad evil boat. Fate decides the outcome.

Or better yet, it is part of the Joker's 'twisted irony' scheme that has a significant impact on Harvey's psyche (before or after the scarring, doesn't matter) and is the trigger for his obsession with dualities.

Excellent thought. It makes Harvey obsessed with the random nature of evil, how there is a 50:50 chance of a good or bad outcome, with the innocent as likely to suffer as the evil.
From a story-telling point of view, I don't want to see Two-Face up to much in TDK, don't want him appearing till the last five minutes, and only rising to infamy in the third movie.

OMFG!

I figured out the use of the National Guard. And this is so non-spoilerish I wonder why none of us thought about it before.

Ok realism. Assume this takes place shortly after Begins.

"Gordon! Gordon! All this city's riot cops are on the island with you!"

"So I'm on my own!?"

"Gordon, there's no one left to send in."

Fast Forward

"The narrows is lost...."

The entire GCPD was in the narrows, minus a couple cops.

The police force took a major hit from the effects of begins. We've all been focused on the fear gas affecting the crazies and making more freaks, not to mention we're just like "oh well, tons of innocents are nuts now"

We completley forgot about all the cops on the island.

Thats why the national guard was brought in. It makes perfect.........realistic...sense.

And it's Anjow FTW!

Good god, that seems so damn obvious now. That's why they are present so early. :)

i have no idea why the hell we all missed that.

It's the simple things really.

Oh and another thing - I'm pretty sure TDK will not end with a cliffhanger. Sure, it will with a direct sting into the sequel but not without tying most (if not all) of the loose ends in the film like Begins did. It also makes sense from a filmmaker's point of view - you don't just leave the audience dangling like that for three years until they have to wait for the next film. Now if Nolan's intending to shoot TDK and its sequel back to back for release within a one-two year timespan, then it is more likely.

yeah, but i mean in terms of a cliffhanger like how Begins did. They could have everything wrap up, but by the end u realize, some how, some way that the next baddie will be Two-face. Keep in mind, we know two face is coming, but the General Audience doesn't have a clue.

Wow, good call.

Dammit, I made a really daft mistake and missed off a page with Mayor:

Basically, Mayor and Gordon are talking to someone I presume is Dent. Dent ordered 800 arrests and they want to know what crack he's smoking (I'm paraphrasing.) The Mayor talks about how the public likes Dent and that's the only reason it might fly.

BTW, I'm increasingly thinking the maniac being talked about at the radio phone-in is Scarecrow, not Joker. It fits Anjow's theory about why the national guard are there.
