So, apparently, there is a rep that this movie and its fanboys have on other message boards....do you believe that the fanboy love for this movie is too much...or do you think its justified?

IMO, I think part of the sentiment is true...but i think a big chunk of it are posters wanting to be like the kid in school who dressed differently just to stand out...and in part, because of jealous fans of other characters....

What about people who don't believe in a god ?

The adoration is justified. Nolan truly did deliver. But since TDK has become so overwhelmingly popular and immense in influence.... in some circles it then becomes "cool" to rebel against it and play denial.

I am slightly confused by this thread...however..

For fanboys, the the hype and adoration seem justified. Others who think differently, IMO, are fans of other characters, as originally stated..

It's just the backlash that all extremely popular comic book movies get. Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2, and Begins got it, too.

Iron Man would have as well except TDK took the heat off it by eclipsing it in popularity and attention last year.

It happens to everything. Lord of the Rings has the same backlash now too.

I find it hard to believe that some of these new "haters" of the film are not just doing it to be different. Maybe a portion of them truly didn't like the film, but not the majority. When something is as critically acclaimed as TDK sometimes hating it becomes the "in" thing.

Precisely. And you know what irks me the most? The fact that others who don't like the film believe that those of us who do think that TDK is absolutely perfect and without flaws. I just want to smack anyone in the mouth who phrases their posts with dumb sentiments like that. Just because we passionately love something doesn't mean it is not without its shortcomings. It is simply that despite all its flaws, it is still a great movie.

And Star Wars too...It makes you uber-cool to hate on something that becomes popular in the mainstream or has a huge influence on pop-culture. If TDK hadn't been nearly as successful and Ledger's performance so universally acclaimed, I think the backlash wouldn't be as intense as it is.

All I know and care about is that I enjoyed it and found it entertaining. I could give a toss what others think, whether they loved it or hated it. Do I think it's "God's gift"? No, there are things I wish Noaln had done differently, like using a more comics-like aesthetic, but overall, I was quite happy with the way it turned out.
I do think there are some who are just "jumping on the bandwagon" when they either praise or criticize. Again, their (and anyone else's) opinions are irrlevant to me.

You have to ask the fans of the film why they liked it. I think the characters all speak to different parts of ourselves, even the Joker. I became a fan of the film because of this character---a very dark and evil character with "zero empathy." I, who possess a conscience, found this character intriguing and I'm still asking myself why exactly. Perhaps there's something deep within myself that admires him for creating chaos. On some level, I think we'd all like to do that at times.

"TDK wasnt god's gift".....

This man is absolutely right!
TDK wasn't god's gift... it was evolution's gift :hehe:...
The pinnacle of superhero movies (not comic-book, that goes to Watchmen... I think, sure w/e)...
The strongest won over the weak...
Now the weak hate the strongest...

I think what some folks forget is that the Joker is probably in the top 5 most popular comic book characters, and he's a friggin' villain. I don't think you can say that about any other comic book villains. So when you have a top 3 superhero mixed with a highly popular villain and the guy playing the villain gives an awesome performance plus dies shortly before the film comes out...it all adds up to enormous hype.

The movie isn't perfect. There are moments of perfection, mainly during scenes involving Ledger's Joker, but overall it's a fairly inconsistent movie. The good/great moments strongly outweigh the mediocre/average moments. Overall it's a great movie with flaws, just like its predecessor Batman Begins.

There are other messages boards? :hehe:

Speaking from a non-comic book reader point of view, I'm really protective of The Dark Knight (although I'm aware it has its flaws).

It stands up as a film on its own, putting aside the superhero element. It's an excellent crime drama/psychological thriller, brilliantly put together and brilliantly acted.

I started to see a lot of TDK backlash when Slumdog Millionaire came along (haven't seen it and don't care to, really) That's when I got super-protective of TDK, especially when Slumdog swept the Oscars.

I've been really, really affected by TDK (not just the Heath element, but the whole thing) and I'm not a comic book "fanboy" (or fangirl as it would be for me!!)

So yes, I don't believe in God and all that. So no.

But TDK was truly a masterpiece in every level.

All joking aside, I've never heard TDK referred to as "God's gift" or anything close to the sort. It was made by a group of very talented, dedicated, hard-working people. That's all.

It's got flaws, as all artistic things made by people do, but it's a testament to what can be achieved in the big studio system.

But since it's not a God-given miracle, it means that it can be done again. :yay:

Some people do act really over the top when talking about this movie.

I liked it to a certain extent but at no point watching it did I think it deserved any Oscars outside the technical awards. Yet when I came on here people thought it was a certainity that it would sweep the awards. Keep in mind this was before it's competation even came out.

As for me not thinking it's a Masterpiece. It's not because I want to be cool or different. I like a lot of things, some of them are extremely popular, other's are extremely unpopular. Some are popular in a demo I don't belong to. I don't like or dislike anything based on popularity, critical acclaim or internet buzz. I like it based on my tastes, my sensiblities and even my life experiences. This stuff about "just being a hater" is exactly why people hate the bat fanboys and why people will say that TDK isn't God's gifts. It's because fanboys are so in love with it that the only reason that they can comprehend being true when someone says they dislike this movie, is that that person is lying.

Perfectly put, TDK was good but as a fan of more comic orientated Superhero movies i found it wanting in many areas and certainly not Oscar worthy (even Ledger who was very good though) to go on some boards and point out your view was like walking into an open oven 11 months ago but i feel as people watch it more, more people can admit it was good but not perfect and are more open to good critisism as long as it makes sense.

Eh, it's definitely got its flaws. But it's also definitely better than Slumdog Millionaire, which is hands down the most overrated movie of 2008. :woot:

Out of all the Oscar-season films, I must say Frost/Nixon was by far the best. It was almost like a reincarnation of All The President's Men - the nail-biting tension, the high-stakes drama, the intriguing history and the provocative journalism. Truly a masterpiece by all accounts.

I liked Frost/Nixon a lot but I would go with The Wrestler for best movie of the year. I actually liked Slumdog, but it had no business winning pretty much every single award in every single category at pretty much every awards show. TDK was the most overrated of the year up until the Slumdog fever took over in the fall.

I've noticed people with chronically short attention spans (i say chronically because most people have short spans nowadays) don't like it...just sayin'

I do think fans invite this backlash tho when they call it a "masterpiece" or "one of the best films ever made" or when Empire magazine puts it as the #15 film of all time.

I'll settle to say it's the best dramatic Superhero movie ever made...with one of the best-acted villains in cinema history

Ah but you see, there is backlash against that statement as well. I think this is a safer level of praise: "It's a very good superhero movie" and just leave it at that. There's plenty of BS out there about how apparently we're all just praising Ledger's work because he died. I for one was praising it as soon as that trailer and the prologue came out in December 2007, a month before he died. And I was praising his voice work when the teaser trailer came out in summer 2007.
