Animation Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Short little teaser from the award show:

Just a glimpse, but I’m really digging what I’m seeing. Very big “Into the Spider Verse” vibes from the animation and art style.

Monday cannot get here soon enough.

Only one I’m familiar with is Cantu, from being on one of the Walking Dead spin-offs.

I like the cast! Brady Noon, the voice of Raphael, is the main kid from The Mighty Ducks tv show on Disney+.

Getting Jackie Chan for a Splinter is an interesting choice, considering Jackie is Chinese and the character is always Japanese. Though, in Rise of the TMNT, that version of the character is basically a Bruce Lee homage, so getting another famous Chinese film martial artist to play this version is kind of fitting.

I am confused about Rose Byrne as Leatherhead.

Considering where Byrne is from, maybe they’re going full-on Crocodile Dundee with the character and making her Aussie instead of Cajun.

Not a fan of casting Jackie Chan as Splinter. Hollywood continues to cast Chinese actors as Japanese characters.

It's also lazy, just like casting Chan as Master Wu in Lego Ninjago, which bombed.
Kind of random. Clearly going to be a different take on Leatherhead.
Sometimes he's a rat. Sometimes he's a human who mutates into a rat. However, when he's a rat, he's usually owned and raised by Hamato Yoshi, who is Japanese.

That movie bombed because it wasn’t marketed that well and, frankly, it just wasn’t that good, not because of his casting.

Seth Rogen, who has a hand in this, has a history of blind casting and casting shows differently than the source material of the projects he is involved with. It’s never just an arbitrary thing. In the show adaptation of Preacher, the character played by Ruth Negga, who is biracial, is white and blonde in the comics. In the Invincible show, Mark Grayson is biracial, due to his mom being Korean American, instead of being just white in the comics. It seems like he’s doing the same thing with this project. With Jackie Chan’s casting, they seem to be making him Chinese instead of Japanese. They probably cast him according to how good he was for the part and adapted the character accordingly. It’s definitely different from what we usually get with the character, for sure, but I’m waiting to see how it pans out before I make a full judgment call.

I mean, if what you say does end up being the case, I’ll be disappointed, but I think Seth Rogen is smarter than that.

I disagree. It wasn't just one reason. The marketing, the casting, the writing, it was multiple things. Also, Jackie Chan was not a good Master Wu. Voice acting is simply not Jackie Chan's strong suit.

Also, if he's casting a lot of his celebrity friends and people he's worked with in the past for various roles, it's not exactly blind casting.

Ah man if this is the same animation style as Spiderverse then this is not for me.

It does look like they are going for a similar visual aesthetic as Spider-Verse.

Alligators are not native to Australia.

Is it a framerate issue? If that’s the case, I totally get that.

That’s…what I was saying. I just didn’t list every single issue.

And by blind casting I meant casting actors for roles regardless of their race or skin color, not because of whether he knows them or not or if they were his inner circle of friends.

Stop being pedantic.
That's because alligators are not native to Australia.

Oh. My. God.

I was merely just suggesting they were going to change the character and make it more of a walking reference to Crocodile Dundee. I wasn’t literally questioning the native residence of crocodiles or alligators.

Why do you take everything so literally and take things people say on this board at face value?

Hopefully not. That's not a direction I want to see them go in for Leatherhead.

Yep. I have astigmatism’s in both of my eyes, both very different. My prescription for my glasses is different for each eye. So overall it’s very tough for me personally watching. It just is an irritant and bothers me. I can’t handle it. The framerate and style really gets me.

Well, judging by your reaction to certain things with this film, they’re probably going to do quite a lot things that aren’t to your liking, so this movie just might not be something that you’ll be into.

There are certain iterations of certain properties that just aren’t for me but are still part of those respective franchises, and I just have to accept that. Not every new take on a big franchise like this is going to be for everyone.

Ah, sorry. Sucks to have something that prevents you from enjoying certain things. I personally really don’t like rapidly strobbing light effects in TV or film. It either gives me a headache or makes me lightheaded. Any time it comes up in something that I’m watching I have to look away for a bit. I just can’t deal with it, period.

Hopefully TMNT gets some sort of TV or film treatment in the future that would be easier on your eyes.

It's possible, but I will still comment on casting and announcements where I see fit. I still plan on seeing the film because I like TMNT and I've enjoyed most of the reboots so far. Even ones with dramatically different changes. I just don't think Jackie Chan is inspired casting as Splinter, and I think it's also outdated casting.
