This is really a sister thread to the one about the worst things that have ever happened to spidey.

Not many people have really included hardcore beatdowns, so i wished to open the floor and try and get some sort of list going.

This hopefully should be more fun than the others since i believe there will be less of a concensus to the answers given.

I haven't had that many spidey comics but out of the ones i've read so far, i would make this kinda list.

Kraven in his last hunt
Black tarantula's first encounter with spidey
Morlun in the other
electro when he got his powers back in the 90s (went around without a mask)
Ock in their first physical encounter
Morlun in coming home.
billions of spidey and spidercide against scarlett spider
Goblin's finding out spidey's identity
Goblin's beatdown of ben reilly in night of the goblin arc.

can't think of anymore, please see if you can do any better than me.#

ps, also try and include the issue these beatdowns occurred in because some of us may not have read the comics and i think they might be very interesting to pick up.

Thanks.

I think their may be too many to count.
At the top of my head tho, Marvel Knights he got beaten up pretty good.

That's a pretty good list, November Rain. I think one of the worst Spidey beatdowns happaned with Vermin, a completely unstable character. Examples of his encounters with Vermin include your listing of Kraven's Last Hunt as well as the Child Within arc from SSM in which Spidey fought both Vermin/Gobby Jr.

In no particular order...

Morlun ofcourse in both storylines he was in...

I think Juggarnaut beat the snot out of him once or twice

If you count Ben Reilly, (and he WAS Spider-Man for a brief time) he got the crap kicked out of him by both cybernetic Hobgoblin in "Blood Brothers" and Norman Osborn in "Revelations" (in the pages from the TPB)

OOH!! Doctor Doom in ASM#349-350! Anyone remember that? Doom was pissed because someone (Black Fox?) stole a family heirloom and basically went nuts on Spidey making the poor guy concussive and hallucinating that he was talking to Uncle Ben. Spidey had NO chance of beating Doom and so he tried to diffuse the situation and find his heirloom.

From the same Micheline(sp?)-Larsen era... when Pete was powerless briefly sometime in the 330's or 340's the Scorpion messed him up but good. I think Black Cat saved him.

Speaking of being powerless, Pete, out of costume, got a brutal smackdown at the hands of Cell-12 also during "Blood Brothers"

I also think Pete got messed up pretty bad in Maximum Carnage... broken ribs and the like.

Also Venom beat the snot out of him on multiple occasions.

There's TONS more... I haven't even gone beyond the early 90's. But I can't think right now. I just got the DVD of 40 years of ASM so I'll peruse that later. The Doc Doom beatdown especially is an overlooked classic.

Great idea for a thread btw. We looked at Spidey's emotional pain and now we're looking at his physical pain. Heh... we're such sadists. ;-)

I'm glad you mentioned the Blood Brothers arc from the Clone Saga, because that's the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread. I have that one issue were the Hobgoblin kicks Spider-Ben's @$$ and Ben finally gets away only to climb into the apartment window of Peter and MJ's, and they find him in a pool of blood on the floor. That was pretty vicious.

I'd throw in the Juggernaut fight there too but that was more about Spider-Man being resilient as compared to him just taking a beating.

A Death in the Family arc from PP: Spider-Man from a few years ago was a good fight too. Both Spidey and the Goblin take a beating in that story. And then Peter ends the fight on his own terms by calling Norman's bluff and just walks away! That was a great underrated fight.

Forget Morlun....

Black Tarantula absolutely OWNS Spidey

I love that he's in Spider-Girl but he needs to come back to the 616. I always thought he had the potential to be an awesome villain.

Unfortunately freemadison, Black Tarantula did come back to the 616...

... as a wimpy, stereotypical "essay" in jail who would talk in gang-slang (eg: "ey mang, whats goin on?!"). And then he got knocked off a prison railing and died.

Now don't you wish he had NEVER come back to the 616? :cwink:

Yeah that was crap. I didn't understand that at all. And how he died, especially after seeing his fights with bugs, made no sense at all.

I like to pretend it was a different Black Tarantula. Since BT came from a lineage of people who put on that costume, maybe it was a ******ed half-brother who took a dive in Daredevil.

Going back on topic.... people really need to re-read ASM#350 where Doc Doom tears up Spidey. What I like about it is (a) Doom isn't some plot-device invented for the sole purpose of "hitting Spider-Man harder than he's ever been hit" ala Morlun... he's a character with decades of established history and a reputation that's been earned... and (b) Spidey's beatdown has real consequences. Nowadays he gets the crap kicked out of him, rests and is fine three pages later. In this issue he's concussive, goes to the Doctor has a cat-scan done, gets a prescription, hallucinates due to what can only be mild brain-damage and is pretty much a mess the rest of the arc....

Yeah, I miss that kind of logical writing too. As in the Sensational arc where Rhino beats the snot out of him and he is fine in the next issue or so. I think they even mentioned it in the story.

Yeah but come on, it's always been the exception never the rule. If half the fights Pete was in had realism he would have been taken from Aunt May once his teachers noticed that almost every day he came in with black eyes, huge bruises, constant broken bones and more scars than canadian hockey players.

I'm willing to let that bit of realism go just so I don't have to constantly watch Pete recovering in a wheelchair cause that would suck worse.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't think of ten right now, but my top three are--

1.Black Tarantrula beat down in the alley.
2.Electro making him beg for his life.
3.First fight with Venom

does anybody have scans of the issue with electro? i'd LOVE to see some parts of it, or at least a very good explanation, please
thanks

I would mention the recent fight with Electro in Marvel Knights. While it's true that both men took a beating, Spidey came out the loser in that one and nearly died in the hospital. Oh, and then the Vulture got him shot immediately after. Yeah, he took a hell of a beating in that story.

didnt' parker win his first fight with venom with only his arm slightly damaged from trying to stop the bell ringing and crushing him.

Can we blame this on the whole Spider God thing increasing his resiliency to abnormally high levels?

I think this was more due to Spidey's intelligence than brute force though. He knew the limitations of that organic webbing (Something they to my sadness have not expunged upon in the movies.) and he knew all he had to do was force Brock to use up enough of it to deplete the symbiote to the point where it had to recover in order to produce more webbing. Venom had usedenough of it on that bell as it was. Peter used it to his advantage.

my point is that he really didn't get that beat down...even after he was knocked out and then revived himself.

he's gotten through worse and also with more pain inflicted on him as well.

I guess we should just wait until Eddie is reunited with the symbiote in the future to make a final judgement on spidey getting the beat down of his life. :sym:
