Danny Elfman's work declined after he abandoned his "scary carnival music"
The only OST's I liked from Elfman are Batman 89', Dick Tracy, and Beetlejuice, after those it's been pretty much down hill from there.

imo

Puzzle posed by Terminator auction

The highly contested auction of rights to the Terminator film franchise could be hit by a legal complication that could bring down the price potential buyers would be willing to pay, according to people familiar with the situation.

The rights to make future Terminator films and television programmes are being sold by Halcyon, the production company behind Terminator: Salvation, the latest film in the series.

The company, which recently sought bankruptcy protection, is selling the rights “in perpetuity” and is seeking a price comparable with the recent $60m sale of rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which were by Viacom’s Nickelodeon channel.

But a person familiar with the negotiations told the Financial Times that there was a possibility that James Cameron, who wrote and directed the first two Terminator films, could re-claim the rights in 2019, which will be 35 years after the release of the first movie.

US law allows writers and other creators of content to reclaim their rights 35 years after the first release of their work by exercising a “termination of transfer”.

“Copyrights expire,” said David Nimmer, an attorney with Irell & Lanella in Los Angeles and the author of Nimmer on Copyright.

However, he added that the “termination of transfer” statute “almost never applies to motion picture content”. This is because screenplay authors and directors usually sign contracts as “workers for hire”.

The exception to this rule concerns screenwriters and directors who write a “spec script” – meaning one that was not originally commissioned by a studio.

“Cameron did write the story on which the first [Terminator] movie was based as a spec [script],” said the person familiar with the negotiations. “That’s exactly why there’s a problem.”

When contacted by the Financial Times, Mr Cameron said it was unlikely he would seek to reclaim the Terminator rights.

“I’ve moved on and am interested in other things now,” he said.

Halcyon also vigorously denied the likelihood of a future claim by Mr Cameron, saying there was “no merit” to the suggestion that the rights might revert to the director “or anyone else in 2019”.

“The fact is that Halcyon owns the rights in perpetuity. Mr Cameron has never disputed this, nor has he or any of his representatives ever advanced the position that the rights might one day revert to him.

“The only people making this claim are representatives of potential buyers who we believe are trying to chill the bidding for the franchise,” Halcyon said.

The sale has attracted considerable interest in Hollywood because it constitutes a rare example of a blockbuster film franchise not controlled by a big studio.

Four studios are involved in the bidding, according to another person familiar with the negotiations.
Crazy huh.

On second viewing, i'd probably give it an 8 out of 10. I still found it incredibly entertaining.

so theres no chance of Cameron bidding the get the rights back he said he's done with it.

I think Danny's ego is too massive to take on someone else's franchise. He's always gonna want to do his own thing. This is why I wasn't jumping up and down when I heard he had the job, even though he is one of my favorite composers still.

No, I wasnt myself after seeing what happened with the score for HB2. I still love some of his work, but for this and HB2 it was just lacklustre.

I saw this movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Didn't go to the theater to see it because of the lackluster reviews. My verdict? It was much better than I anticipated.

Leaps and bounds better than T3 but of course a far cry from T2 but of course what was the chances of that to begin with unless Cameron returned. The main problem that I had with this movie was that there was two protagonist and no antagonist. But it was a quality popcorn movie.

Personally, I would shelve the franchise indefinitely until you can get a hardcore director to takeover. I'm sure Cameron would never return but I would love to see someone like a Ridley Scott, Peter Jackson, or even a JJ Abrams.

Agreed, on all points.

I dont care who got that idea, it's stupid (same as the lack of bonus features in the dvd version) :down

It doesn't get more people to buy the blu-ray... it gets people to not buy the **** at all. I loved the movie and didn't buy it cause us dvd guys got screwed.

Finally saw the film last night, the director's cut.

I really liked it. I thought it was a really good action movie. Good cast, the only one that was lackluster for me was Common because of a strange line delivery that was just ****ing funny to me.

I liked the style the film was shot, and the look in the film was pretty cool. The style of clothes, like Connor's jacket and the red band to signify the resistance was pretty cool. Great post-apocalyptic style going on.

I have no idea how this film is rated under T3. The film was better, I think. The only thing T3 has on this film is having Arnold. And even then, Salvation as a really nice tip of the hat to Arnold.

Watched it again, and it sucks more then ever. It's really a shallow, soulless movie.

If this was some generic action flick, it wouldnt be too bad...but since the Terminator movies (1-2) had heart, and soul....and this has none....its just, wow.

That's a bad line anyway. It's freakin hilarious!

Bale is a one note character. You felt nothing for any of the characters except for Reese. It tries to have a moment where you should feel something (The heart), but you just dont care...at all.

You dont get to know Kathrine. They dont even mention the baby. Bale has no emotional depth to him, which he should. We dont see the horrors that Skynet has bestoed(sp?) upon us. Its a dry, uninspired movie. Cool action. But no heart, no soul, no nothing. Just paint by numbers storytelling.

Exactly! i bought the dvd but i must say it's a total disappointment. I love watching the bonus features, and it just feel lame to not have any at all

I don't know how much heart or soul T1 had. Reese's infatuation with Sarah is incredibly corny imo. You're supposed to care, but (for me anyway) you don't.

I dunno, I thought Connor showed emotion for going against the leadership and wanting to go in for a rescue mission. I think we saw emotion in him talking about his dad, and really mostly wanting to rescue the prisoners. I don't think I would have liked seeing him cry, though. I don't know how much Bale could have done with the role, without adding more scenes. I think most viewers will feel something for Marcus, too, by his search for redemption. Maybe even something for Blair as well. I think the problems with Connor arent Bale's fault, because we didn't get as much of Connor as I would have liked. The movie is pretty split down the middle between Connor's screentime and Marcus' screentime.

I agree about Katherine. That could have been remedied with atleast one scene, or something. Just him touching her belly with a look from both of them or something. I think we saw the horrors that was being done by Skynet, we saw a couple of the concentration camps they had and the ways they would hunt down humans.

Again, it's not as good as T2, closer to T1 but still not better dispite being larger, and I think it blows T3 out of the water. I think it's a good action movie, and I'd like to see what they would do with a sequel.

I imagine we'd get to see much more Connor, since he's probably going to be A #1 Leader of the resistance now.

And, strangely...he'd be stronger now than he was at the start of the movie.

Which??

I hated common.

It's the scene when Connor and HK are testing out the Terminator disruptor, and one of the hunters crashes. His "beautiful" line...just awkwardly funny.

Yeah, it's a ****ed up trend...that is getting worse, because now we're getting regular dvd's without anything on Special Features.

The features on the Blu-ray are pretty damn cool, though. The "WB Maximum Movie Mode" looked pretty cool for the 10 or so minutes I glimpsed at it.

It's just so transparent how they're trying to speed up the death process of regular DVD's. They're just trying to bury it faster and faster, it seems.

I bought the Blu-ray version and there wasn't much material in there that couldn't fit in a regular DVD. Nothing special at all. I was hoping they would do a synopsis on the other Terminator movies, have a commentary with christian bale but no. Even the scene where they described Arnold being recreated was pretty crappy. Arnold never did any interviews.

I heard the Blu-Ray Live screening was a total failure in terms of streaming the audio from mcG, and the audience's comments. Blu-Ray is the biggest load of expensive crap I have bought in a while.

I'm still waiting for the PC-TV fusion where I can download movies in HD directly to a hard drive and store them digitally. My DVD and Blu-Ray DVD stack is hitting the ceiling.

I disagree. T3 may not have been good, but it was hand over fist better then TS. TS had so many problems in my eyes, that mainly had to do with plot holes, and inconsistency to the Terminator mythos made from the first two. I mean T3 had plot holes, but none of them near as big and just down right bad as TS.

The ones that bugged me was some how Skynet knew who Kyle Reese was? When it clearly stated that he was born after the war, there would be no record of him, or anything that Skynet could use to truly identify him. And just the fact that the Terminators apparently in TS are made to "push" people around. I mean in T3 when the T-X got close at least there was some suspense there because you knew she would not just "push" John Connor against a wall. You knew the T-X actually posed a threat and would do what a Terminator was made to do.....Terminate. They don't dick around, or waste energy, they go for the direct. The T-800 could have killed John two billion times, but they just made him run around pushing people.

Not only that just some of the "over the top" stuff, or just really "too close" calls that just got to me. Like the entire Moto-Terminator chase, there was just too many "coincidences". Little things like how did the people not hear the Harvester?

One of the other big things that bugged me was the fact that Skynet apparently is a moron in this one. He sends one Terminator after them....allows a human hybrid access to everything, and forgets to turn the defenses back on. Lets the Human resistance in crappy helicopters run right up to his main base, with out so much as a fight. It just boggled my mind on how it was all let loose in the end.

More little things like....there is ONE skull in this entire future, that bugged the hell out of me, its part of the aesthetic of Terminator and it just looked like a deserted town, it should be like Cameron did it, hell if Mostow did it, making it look like LA frozen in time.

The acting even I thought was quite wooden, and there was no heart in it even Cameron said that. The first had a touching love story, and the second had the emotions between John and his mother, and John and the learning T-800.

And don't get me off on the ending, the ending was just plain stupid. I liked how the book did a lot of things better, it seemed Foster understood it better lol.

Most know I was a huge supporter of TS, but man when it came out I ate a lot of crow/humble pie. It was a disaster IMO. On my second viewing a few weeks back people saw on the other Terminator forum I gave it a new score of a 55%.

But to those that liked it more power to you, nothing wrong with one more film out there that you like.
