Terrence Howard Reveals Power-Thirsty Side Of Iron Man's Sidekick

Superhero flick starring Robert Downey Jr. hits theaters in May 2008.

by Shawn Adler

BEVERLY HILLS, California — Terrence Howard knows it's hard out there for a pimp, but that's nothing, he said, compared to what it's like being best friends with embattled billionaire playboy Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man.

"Me, I like to talk," Howard said when asked about his character, Jim Rhodes, in "Iron Man." The film is entering production (see "Terrence Howard: From Pimp To Iron Man's Best Friend?"). "Seeing Iron Man [do] battle [in] the original suit that he made — crashing into a car and flipping me off like I'm nothing — [it doesn't] even affect him! Me? [My character will be] sitting there waiting — lusting for the opportunity to have my own power."

As one of the few people who know Stark's secret identity in the original comic series, Rhodes takes over as Iron Man when Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) relapses into debilitating alcoholism. Director Jon Favreau has said that Downey will carry out the alcoholic plot line in the second "Iron Man" movie (see "Have Doubts About The 'Iron Man' Movie? Jon Favreau Wants To Hear Them").

Stark soon returns, building an even higher-powered version of the Iron Man suit: the War Machine. Rhodes eventually dons the War Machine armor in the comic to fight crime alongside his lifelong friend, and the intense "Hustle & Flow" actor said he's looking forward to the action.

"That's what I'm looking for, [but] depending on the success of the first one, War Machine [won't be in until] the second one," Howard revealed about plans for his character. "[It's cool] because when I create my own War Machine stuff, I put some extra artillery on there."

As die-hard fans know, Rhodes meets Stark after Iron Man saves his life when a plane crash leaves him stranded behind enemy lines. Though Howard said the film won't take place in Vietnam — as the Marvel Comics story did — the 37-year-old star told MTV News that he will get to do plenty of piloting.

"James Rhodes is a colonel, a fighter pilot — something special, something extremely special," the Oscar-nominated actor asserted, adding that in preparation for his role he'll get to "do it all: land on aircraft carriers, do simulated battles and go up in the F-15s in Las Vegas for a month to train with these guys."

Best known for serious work in flicks like "Crash," Howard is experiencing a departure by playing a comic book sidekick. But, he said, the high-tech War Machine get-up will suit him just fine. "I'm getting to play," Howard said as an impish smile broke across his face.

The movie, which hits theaters in May 2008, also stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges.

I'm looking for to the sequel more than Iron Man. :ninja:

Can't wait to see War Machine in action and Robert Downey playing a tortured alcoholic.

God, I thought I was excited before... this is awesome, thanks man! The info stream had been running dry lately, we needed this.

Blind_Fury certainly has the right of it, the 2nd should be extraordinary.

Terrence is gonna kick so much ass :o

The first film is gonna rock the world and shock alot of people. They're gonna be like "Iron Man" I remember that...an old comic...right? Is that Marvel?"

LOL

The second film is gonna be way more fun cause we'll know the characters and the quirks in the film. I hope they film 2 & 3 together.

I'm really excited, I think the first film will be awesome and the second one sounds fantastic.

I think we can all guess the plot of the sequel already, not that it's ever very hard with superhero movies.

I cant wait for the sequel either, lol

Word. But this movie's looking promising as well.

Good read...I'm really looking forward to the first film, and what we know so far. But the sequel does sound just as promising. It should be great to see Rhodey don the War Machine armor.

*Sigh*

With what the 2nd film is covering(Stark's downward spiral into alcoholism), I don't think fun is the best way to describe it. I'm not a big fan of filming movies back to back either and then releasing them just a year apart or perhaps months apart. I like there to be 2 - 3 years between the releases of films to really get the audience hungry for the film.

Jumping in on the sequel discussion for a moment, I think they should look at the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline, the Obadiah Stane storyline from #160-#200, as well as the Armor Wars.

I like were Terrence is coming from in the interveiw, he seems excited about getting on set and working with Robert, Jeff and Gwyneth.
I'm really excited to hear all the positive buzz the actors are making when they talk about the film and what to look forward to.

Terrence Howard will play Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes in Marvel Studios' Iron Man, which starts filming on March 12, and ComingSoon.net got a chance to ask the actor about playing the title character's confidante. Rhodes, a high ranking military officer and aviator, steers the team that develops the robotic suit that allows the sickly hero to fly around and battle bad guys.

CS/SHH!: Can you talk about going into "Iron Man" which is a total fantasy world?
Terrence Howard: Not when you're working with Robert Downey Jr.; there's no fantasy about that. You're talking about getting ready for some action, 'cause what I love about him and [director] Jon Favreau is you cannot predict who they are and what they're thinking. And then you add Jeff Bridges to the mix; I still think about the film he did with Kevin Spacey. He's from another planet because he's present, but then he's in front of you at the same time. And then you've got Gwyneth Paltrow, so there's nothing fantastical about it. It's like, "You say you want to be an actor?" Every single one of these people have been nominated or have won an Academy Award, so now let's see what you're made of.

CS/SHH!: Talk about your character in "Iron Man."
Howard: I play a guy named James Rhodes, who becomes War Machine, a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force. I'm the liaison between Starks Enterprises and the military in the department of acquisitions.

CS/SHH!: Have you seen the costumes for "Iron Man"?
Howard: We didn't do the costumes yet; I haven't seen any of Tony Stark's costumes, but the outfits these people had on were amazing, they were beautiful. I took this role and I wanted to work with Robert Downey because he has a spontaneity and a fearlessness that I get close to. But I'm still very conservative and reserved than the film choices I make; he doesn't care, he just does it. He believes jump out of an aircraft at 25,000 feet in the air and just go "wooooooooo" all the way down – I want to learn that, I want to learn that.

Paramount will distribute Iron Man on May 2, 2008. Howard can next be seen in Pride, opening March 23.

<H2>Terrence Howard discusses Iron Man sequel!
By Thomas Leupp
While promoting his latest flick, Pride, Terrence Howard spoke briefly to ReelzChannel.com about his role in the highly-anticipated comic book flick Iron Man:
"I don't start (shooting) until the 28th, but on the 12th of this month I get to go to Las Vegas with the United States Air Force and fly in F-15s for about two weeks -- simulated battles, land on aircraft carriers, I get to do it all."
Howard plays Jim Rhodes, fighter pilot and best buddy of billionaire industrialist Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), otherwise known as Iron Man.
Howard also hinted at sequel plans: "In the next one they make a suit for me and I become 'War Machine,'" said Howard, "so I'm a sidekick."
Iron Man arrives in theaters Summer 2008.

Nice.

Hmm. So Howard starts shooting on the 28th...I like how he keeps bringing up War Machine, and that he'll soon go through training for the role.

I'm feeling most of what he says, and I'm especially glad he's excited about taking on the role. I'm ecstatic that he's confirmed Rhodey will be a military man in the film (Air Force instead of a Marine, but I guess that's splitting hairs).

But the way he describes Rhodey as lusting for power...I hope that's just his feeling, and not how Rhodey is presented in the movie.

I say, wait for the 1st before being hyped for the second.

If the 1st is an amazing piece of crap, will you really be hyped for the 2nd? ;)

The Afghani cave sets have been built, the Winston grey armor is completed and awe-inspiring, they've hired at least one ME actor, and Howard doesn't start for 2 weeks after principal begins... sounds like they're going to knock out the origin story right out of the gate. I hope we get some OS love at SDCC this year :D

^^^ You speaketh from common wisdom, but an actor-driven, drama-heavy second act to this trilogy, from this cast, gets me all hot and bothered regardless. And yes, the inclusion of War Machine certainly won't detract from that. :)
