Just for sake of comparison the first movie had an opening weekend of $62 million, but that's because it opened on a Tuesday ahead of the July 4 holiday, which fell on a Wednesday in 2012. So it had an opening day of $35 million, and a July 4 gross of $23 million.
Captain America doing better than Spider-Man though is kind of exciting though IMHO. Just kind of shows that Cap has finally arrived after we had to wait for years to finally get a good movie. It was worth it.
Because after X-Men and Spider-Man in 2000 and 2002 it felt like a new golden age of comic book superhero movies. So it seemed like Iron Man, Captain America were all surefire to be made next. Instead it took about another 10 years, but it worked out for the best. Having misfires such as Hulk and Daredevil worked out in the long run because eventually Marvel was able to start doing this themselves and now they are owned by Disney were able to re-attain Daredevil, Ghost Rider, and Punisher and they can use them as they see fit, while granted X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spidey are still at other studios.
