It's doing well, but not like they would hope.

The problem really lies with the fact that they spent way too much money on the marketing, so sony made it difficult for itself to really profit.

Yes. I was going to edit and add that.

For this specific film, yes. A Captain America-esque budget would end all talk about the profitability of TASM2.

They still have the problem of declining returns for each successive film in the franchise, especially domestically. That's a trend they need to reverse, no matter the actual profit of this particular film.

But it would be far less scary for Sony if this film was cheaper, for sure.

Yes. Each film makes less and less money it seems, and if the trend continues, then sony really screwed themselves over.

They also spent boatloads of money on entire sequences, storylines and characters that never made it into the movie and then on reshoots to shoehorn the Sinister Six storyline.

Had they planned the film better, the production budget would have been lower as well.

In a way, the large budget should help that. It makes it much harder for Sony to pretend that everything is A-OK. It would be much easier to turn things around when the franchise is making $700-800 million per film than $400-500 million per film, which it might be if they keep the present course for another 2 or 3 films.

This might be enough to wake Sony up.

It's really at a point that simply being an iconic beloved character is not enough to automatically assume a movie is going to make a massive profit. A studio really has to keep other factors in mind.

TASM3 is probably going to perform around the same as TASM2 if not worse. If the movie is really good and gets people hyped for Sinister Six, then maybe, just maybe they can work their way up to about $800M or more. But that S6 film is going to be another huge budget film that will probably get marketed like crazy.

Well if it goes to MS, there won't be SHIELD involved.....

Actually, both 616 and Ultimate versions have Peter's parents tied to SHIELD (616 they were field agents, Ultimates they were scientists). Let's say they do not have SHIELD rebuild, it wouldn't matter as the SHIELD ties would have happened in the past when it was still functional.

The scenes with the air traffic controllers and the planes were completely unnecessary to the film. Spidey didnt even know it was happening and everybody - spidey, gwen, the audience - was perfectly aware the city was in danger. Utterly pointless. Just one of several examples of stuff (scenes, tertiary characters, flashy effects shots)they wasted time and money on. Add that to the scenes that didn't make the cut plus reshoots and one begins to understand why the cost was so high.

How long has this been the case?

Thinking about it, I better take a step back, they were agents in 616 since annual 5 back in 1968 but thinking back, it may have been an undefined agency except you know they were part of the US government. (Possibly CIA?) it's been 35+ years since I read the issue and I only read it once. I have access to a copy of the story though thanks to a new Omnibus and will check it out again.

For the Ultimates, it was definitely SHIELD and I would argue they planned his parents to be SHIELD from the start of the run, but that was revealed for sure during a mini series which had them both working for Fury.

Yeah, I didn't remember them working for SHIELD in 616 but then again I have never been a regular Spidey reader.

If Sony want to save money. Scale back the marketing which will get cheers rather than groans. And only shot what you need, this will save a fortune in production costs.

I zipped around the web and it's leaning towards CIA, BUT even in that case Fury was involved. I might just be thinking of the old story and remembering Fury and inserting SHIELD in there because he was there. I think before they retconned everything these last 15 years, Fury did a CIA stint before he became an agent of SHIELD.

Plus the budget seems to go higher with each passing sequel as well.

Update, just remembered Kurt Busiek back in 1997 did a flashback in Untold tales of a Spider-Man and clarified they were SHIELD.

Any numbers for today? It's Wednesday so I'm only expecting so much.

Not yet. I got a great jump Tuesday and should get another bump up today. Thursday is the low/slow day for films.

At least overseas figures should be resilient but I can see domestic continuing to fall off with each film. It's a problem that they have to keep making films every few years forever just to keep the rights. No other solo character is in this position without room to breathe if the makers feel it necessary.

No it shouldn't. Drop around 25-30% but since Tuesday was such a high bump, maybe even bigger drop(>30%).

Guardian is reporting that even though Amazing Spider-Man 2 will come out on top in the UK for the third week in a row, it is technically being beaten by Neighbors. However, it has surpassed Captain America: the Winter Soldier in the UK, but is behind the first Amazing Spider-Man film by £1.77 million.

Another thing that they need to do moving forward is calm down with all the reshoots. It seems like half of the last 2 films were reshot on the fly. Have a plan and stick to it.
