Given the entire HP series has gotten good reviews and good WOM (in general) I would say quality was one of the factor's in it's success.

It (good reviews) certainly didn't hurt it but it isn't 'THE' reason for BO success. Look at Pirates and Transformers. Those movies are critic proof, quality has nothing to do with their BO success.

There is an exception to every rule, but there is always more examples of poor quality leading to diminished returns as opposed to higher BO grosses. Transformers and Pirates are exceptions, not the rule.

Man I really hope this at least hits the $700M mark haha.

I wonder what rights could Disney get back first. Spider-Man or Fantastic Four. Maybe Disney could start negations with Sony. They are in a bad spot as it is as anyway company wise in terms of profit. The head Playstation guy took a 50 % pay cut

Would Disney even want it back at this point? Disney have Captain America beating Spidey DOM and Spidey should only win WW by only a small margin, even so, Spidey only did what it did OS because there was relatively no major competition for 3 weeks, that's not happening with TASM 3.

The only I could see them paying to get it back is if Men in Black went back with them and if Sony do some co-financing and producing on all future Spidey films, in return for some of the revenue (keeping the cost Disney would have to pay up front slightly cheaper, and to keep Sony slightly happy)

Either company would barely make anything if things were split based on how much these movies are making under Sony. Disney could at least do with Spidey what they did with the Hulk. Re introduce him in an The Avengers movie & do his character perfect justice & find people that care about the character & do it right

That Monday number is almost exactly what I thought it would be. I didn't post a prediction though. I think the best case this weekend is a 49% drop, it all depends on how big Godzilla will be.

My predictions right now are:

1.Godzilla-63mil
2.Neighbors-23.5mil-52%.
3.TASM2-17.5mil-50.5%

When did Kong fight Godzilla a 2nd time? There is only 1 film, King Kong vs Godzilla in which they fight. They PLANNED to do a 2nd Kong vs Godzilla film after Godzilla vs Biollante, but Universal wanted too much money, so they made Godzilla vs King Ghidorah instead. You're maybe confusing the fact that the movie has 2 very different cuts of the film (American vs Japanese), but that is still 1 showdown.

I think Godzilla is making over 60 OW. The movie has strong reviews so far, and Godzilla is a brand name. One that hasn't had a theatrical film here in the US for a long time, and outright hasn't had a film made since 2004. Given that and the strong buzz around the film itself, I think over 60 mil will happen.

It is indeed one show down, but I am also one of those that considers the Japanese film to be a separate entity from the American recut. I'll concede that particular point. As for NewZilla, we'll just have to see how it pans out. I truly wish it all the luck, as I am a fan of giant monsters. The entire giant monster/kaiju genre is one of the exceptions I have when it comes to sci-fi films (I am not much of a fan of hard science fiction).

I know. But staying at $600M just looks bad. At least make what the predecessor made.

I'm wondering how could it at this point?

It's guaranteed to make less domestically and I'm not sure there's enough of a surge in spider-man popularity internationally to push its totals much above TASM?

This is what's called hitting saturation point, there's just no more room for growth.

From a business stand-point, without some 5 year + hiatus or maybe a move to marvel studios, i cannot see the spider-man franchise growing anymore or not getting continually lower totals?

Gotcha

Both King Kong Escapes and KKvG are VERY different in their American/Japanese cuts, this is very true.

Yup, it sucks.

Or just make a really good Spider-Man movie.

I think Spider-Man could use a little help by appearing in The Avengers. WB rebooted Batman so soon after Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy by putting him in the same movie with Superman and WW in BvS, so the novelty factor could make the audience less wary of another new Batman. But Spider-Man is stuck in his own island, and I think the repetitiveness has set in, not to mention that the movie missed its marks several times and came out as mediocre, which is reflected by its RT score.

If there was any inkling of a deal between disney and sony to cross promote by including spider-man in a future marvel release that expired likely with the TWS and all the money it's made, possibly more than TASM 2 in the end.

It's more in disney's interest to hope spider-man on his "island" sinks at some point and they could buy it for a lowered price.

Disney/marvel doesn't really need spider-man right now, especially if they don't fully own his property.

At this point, the only massive money maker I can see Spidey doing is a Sinister Six versus Spidey movie. I don't even think repeating Venom is going to work great any more. And the love stories are just getting redundant. Ones I love will be the ones who pay, we get it.

I think you just bypass MJ or give her a cameo role, and go with Black Cat as the main girl. Think Sinister Six has to be next. You have 3 villains good to go, plus Ock. Add Vulture and Chameleon and you're set. Don't wait on it and wrap up a compact trilogy.

If it does well, redo a symbiote saga in ASM4. Then sell the rights back.

I think adding Black Cat next movie might be a good idea. This movie needs to do SOMETHING in order win the audience back. Rehashing MJ next movie with 6 villains (as Webb has yet to show the ability to handle one) won't end well, IMO. I just don't see the excitement for the Sinister Six idea right now.

Well, since a big problem is how much this film cost, one way they could make a cheaper, less FX intensive film is by making a film featuring Kingpin (or somebody like Silvermane or Tombstone if Arad is full of it about having the rights) and Black Cat.

They are in the same situation Fox was in after X-Men Origins. Sony needs to focus on just making a good film to try and win back the audience they've lost.

Of course, Webb being unable to handle one villain should be irrelevent, since at this point Webb needs to go and simply bringing him back would be a big mistake.

No no Black Cat,Peter wouldn't want to have a fling with anyone right now.

These street villains simply aren't going to get it done at the box office. Did Origins or Wolverine become lucrative with a more grounded approach? Right now, Sony is at a point of no return. They can't all of a sudden start scaling back after providing such a spectacle filled, visual universe. It doesn't work. Only a heavy hitter like Ock with a team will garner some casual interest again from a villain standpoint. Frankly, Parker's personal life is getting boring and redundant, and that's a glaring issue now.

If Sony were smart, I'd give the street elements to Marvel in exchange for movie elements. Have the Bugle in DD along with a Jameson. Let Garfield do some cameos. Get Blade and Punisher back in the mix along with the Spidey universe. Then get these elements on film in a Sony produced picture. Spidey needs help, and I don't think Sony has enough brand name characters in their stable to provide that.

"Spider-Man and The Defenders" - Spider-Man teams up with the stars of Marvel's hit Netflix series, only in cinemas. Spidey, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and The Black Cat take the battle against the Sinister Six to the streets of New York in the first co-production between Marvel and Sony studios.

Sony gets some Amazing Friends for Spidey to play with, a reduction in production costs and a chance to reinvigorate the series. All while keeping Spider-Man the star of the series.

Marvel gets to bring their most popular character into the MCU, big screen treatments for their street-level series and a chance to sell a ton of tie in merchandise.

Who says no?

I swear that's been the prominent theme in just about every Spidey film, and I can't tell you how many variations of that line have been said in both series combined. It's honestly gotten so dry at this point. When I heard that line in the trailer I couldn't help but roll my eyes.

They really need to try something new to bring some life into this thing.

This would be the perfect time for Disney to offer 1 billion to Sony for the rights back.

The Sony execs have to realize Spider-man won't be earning them anywhere near that kind of money any time soon.

If anything the franchise will become a money pit for Sony.
