Ok guys, theory time:

What if the "scoop" that LR got last month, which I believe to be from a connection they had at Disney, was only regarding the Disney end of the situation. What if Disney knew Pascal was going to step down and formed their plans to incorporate spiderman without sony's knowledge, knowing that all they needed was to wait till Pascal leaves. And what if that's why sony denied the spiderman MCU plans; they simply weren't involved. And so now, it's marvel's time to pitch their plan to the new chair.

Idk, personally it still think it's possible all of that stuff was already worked out under Pascal, but maybe. I definitely wouldn't put it past marvel to plan like that.

Both of those theories sound plausible. Maybe Marvel knew that they had a better shot at the deal happening when Pascal stepped down as co-chair.

Whatever the case is (and we will likely never know the full story of what went on behind the scenes), I think a deal will be made under a new chair, especially if that chairman is Doug Belgrad

What makes Belgrad so likely to succeed Pascal?

His name keeps popping up in reports from deadline to la times, and he is pretty high up in sony currently. But other than that, I don't really know. I'm sure there's a good amount of qualified contenders who are also willing to get the deal done.

I bet almost all of them are smarter than Pascal.

Even she knew she dug the franchise into a hole, she was just unwilling to dig it out through reasonable means

"Ok, I know we ****ed up on our biggest property, and playing ball with Disney/Marvel is by far the most realistic option to get us out of this mess. But I refuse to take the necessary steps if it means sacrificing the man that had a huge hand in getting the franchise in the state it's in." - Amy Pascal, Genius.

Yea, the only thing Goddard was the **** you magic tricks email, which while embarrassing, doesn't discredit his talents as a writer and director. I still think he'd be a great fit for spidey, but not with sony

I still don't want to see Sandman stomping around through London. Goddard's vision didn't seem all that enticing either since some of his member ideas are left-field, and not in a good way.

But what makes Belgrad our man as far as getting a deal done? If he was truly Pascal's number two, it could just be business as usual from him.

Pretty much sums up the logic being used. They were hoping for a miracle with the franchise, and they're future plans (using the word "plans" very loosely) were borderline reckless. A spinoff series would have to launch on healthy grounds, which clearly they were not on financially or creatively.

At the very least, we should see a return to focus with the franchise. The possibility of a marvel deal, however, has never been more likely than it is from here on out

He pitched the Disney/sony coproduction reboot trilogy. He wants the deal.

(Btw nice sig, one of my all time favorite comedians.)

It didn't, the email was unflattering to say the least. But he was really just speaking buddy to buddy there in that email and joking around, I doubt it sums up the entirety of his vision. Still don't wanna see a s6 film any time soon. And I dont want to see sony use Goddard like they used Webb

The thought of any Sony produced Spider-Man films is nauseating. I really don't want to see them attempt the Sinister Six and ruin it like they did with the death of Gwen Stacy.

Yeah, at this point I don't wanna see an S6 film, especially with the superior-sounding Suicide Squad on the horizon. If Goddard wrote and directed a Spider-Man film for Marvel Studios, I wouldn't be against that.

The hacked emails showed he was down for the deal.

I hope to God he gets it. I met Demetri twice after two shows. Really nice guy.

Thanks!...and thanks! Right, I couldn't remember the name from the leaked emails. It was Belgrad, eh? You don't still have a link to that specific email, do you?

Goddard at Sony is useless. That film would probably be a critical and financial failure especially due to it being released around the time that Suicide Squad comes out.

Yea, even if it was marvel studios doing S6, it's just not something I wanna see right now. Luckily it's gonna be hard enough for sony to actually get the film off the ground if they do go through with it, I can't see them even being able to put out a final product there.

Same. I think something like Sinister Six requires a build-up like the Avengers. Don't just make a movie where you introduce and recruit a number of characters to be on a team. Introduce them individually and develop them before the major movie comes out.

Yup: http://behindthepanels.net/faraway-so-close-how-spider-man-was-almost-in-captain-america-civil-war/

According to a leaked 30 October email between Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad and Sony’s motion picture chief Amy Pascal, Belgrad told Pascal of a scenario in which Marvel would produce a trilogy of Spider-Man films with “creative control, marketing and distribution” remaining with Sony. A separate email also confirmed that Marvel wished to use Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War film.

Hopefully he hasn't changed his mind about it, and the creative control part is yucky, but that was likely just to appease Pascal or possibly Arad.

I wonder how Goddard felt when he heard about Suicide Squad getting a film the same year and before his movie. He sounded so passionate about the movie's premise in his email. Had to hurt.
