Saying "these few things are good, the rest sucks" doesn't cut it as constructive criticism.

Spider-Man is in a poor position as a character because the image the majority of the general audience and probably fans in general will forever see him as a teenager. So you have a character that is rebooted time and time again to return him to that age. He is a teen in the USM cartoon and in the Ultimate comic, give it a few years and he will be teen in and Marvel Now universe as well.

More then a few years guy, and even if the unlikeliest thing happened and marvel got him back he is going on their shelf for a good while

Another arc that I look forwarded to seeing in TASM3 is the iteration they go forward with regarding MJ and Peter.

Peter shouldn't date anyone till TASM4. Their inevitable romance can slowly be set up for the sequel

While it's incredibly likely MJ is gonna be in TASM3 and many people are almost in a rush to see him with MJ I think they should do something abit different so it's not just another boy meets girl and falls in love story like we just had and he just lost

I always took Sean for a defender of the franchise. Some stuff in the article is a little dumb, though.

I still want a movie with an adult Pete. He was almost 20 at the end of ASM2, so he is going to become an adult sooner or later. I say they should just let it happen.

If I were giving constructive critisism for ASM2 I would say the character interactions and performances were pretty good but the story tieing all the threads together needed to be tighter.

The major problem for ASM2 is the parents storyline should have been resolved in the first movie or the pay off needed to be bigger in the second movie.

For me, going into a movie my biggest concern is whether I will like the characters. If I like the characters I will forgive a hell of a lot (like plot holes and pacing problems) because when characters I care about are put in peril I will always be engaged. If I don't care about the characters regardless of how tight the story is I tend to check out of the movie (Tinker Tailor/Hurt Locker).

So, (IMHO) Sony's most important character (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) is very likeable. I also like Dahaan who is central to the S6 movie.
So the main building blocks are there they just need a storyline with big enough steaks to bring great performances from all involved.
The story doesn't have to be complex. A good rule for story tellers;
Simple story, complex characters.

I am hopeful Goddard is given the freedom and range to breathe new life into the Spider-Man franchise.

Excellent post. The TASM series has been great for likeable and down-to-earth characters that you can easily care about (thanks to the incredible cast) but the storytelling definitely needs improving in these movies.

I'm curious to also see how long they make MJ not aware of Peter being Spider-Man, how she'll find out, etc.

I think even regards to that, they can go in a different route. Possibly have MJ find out accidentally, or just in another way we haven't seen before.

MJ should be best left out of TASM3 IMO. A Spider-Man film without a love interest (unless it's Black Cat) would be something different and fresh. I'm in no rush to see MJ again unless it's in a new film series (not essentially a reboot).

How?

1. Focus on one villain. Yea I don't see how that's dumb.
2. Ditch the love interest. Honestly I'm good with this solely because Gwen's dead. Peter doesn't want to put any other girl at risk because of Gwen's death. Maybe end the film with Peter meeting MJ for the first time showing where a sequel is heading.
3. Hire a new director. Can't disagree. There are way better directors out there then Marc Webb.
4. Abandon the Oscorp plot. Honestly in my take on a TASM3 (before Sinister Six was announced to happen first), I had Oscorp going out of business. Nobody wants to invest in a company where they had such major problems like Lizard, Electro, and Harry becoming a villain.
5. Abandon the real parents. I had this in a way in my TASM3. Peter visits Connors and tries to talk with him. He states how Oscorp is going out of business. Connors tells him there was a project him and Peter's father were working on (which is the black suit). I end my script with Peter kind of putting his parents stuff away saying "I know enough about you guys. I don't need to know anything else."
6. Recast Spider-Man. This is the only one I disagree with. I like Andrew and think he can do very well. The problem is the writing and script.

Mary Jane could be both a kindred spirit who is dealing with her issues in a similar fashion as Peter, and a mirror in which he sees the pitfalls of their mutual approach.

In a way it would be similar to the development of the Widow-Cap friendship from CA:TWS, but it's in Peter's civilian life and they both are keeping their secrets secret.

I wouldn't mind seeing MJ done in TASM3 but it can't be for the sake of just putting her in there and for the sake of having a potential love interest.
It has to come off as organic as possible and they can't stress too much of Peter possibly looking to Mary Jane, especially after Gwen's death and the fact that the Peter/Gwen relationship has been the best thing from the TASM series; they don't want to just copy that for the sequel and replace it with something that doesn't feel as natural, that doesn't live up to the chemistry we've had from Andrew and Emma.

IF they do decide to include MJ, then they really need to do her right, having her and Peter meet at the lowest points in life and helping each other out; this is something the writers really need to achieve in the script. There can be a spark between them (and quite a powerful one) but they should just remain friends and possibly have the audience wonder if they will get together, even if the two (in the film) don't know they're meant to be together just yet.

This reminds me of another idea I once had for the Peter/Gwen dynamic and Gwen's eventual death.

Before the series even started, I had a thought that would mix the arc from the comics with the movie's version.

I imagined a scenario where Gwen doesn't know about Peter being Spider-Man. However, minutes before she plunges to her death, she finds out Peter is Spider-Man after his mask tears off while fighting Goblin. Peter and Gwen share an intimate moment where they're looking into each other's eyes while she's falling in slow motion, with Spider-Man's web attached, and consequently she dies due to the snap (or whatever you want to call it) from the comics. The added effect would be Gwen actually looking into Peter's eyes since he would be without his mask, and her death would leave the audience wondering what her thoughts were in those final seconds of her life.

Edit: They could possibly do the same thing with MJ. Without her dying, of course.

Please Sony, let me write a Spider-Man movie focusing on Peter's life after Gwen's death.

As someone who's in college, its practiacly Babe City. How Peter struggles in terms of his love life after letting someone he had so close to him die. How he acts in college. I picture him non social. Sitting in the back a lot or away from classmates. Every time he blinks he sees Gwen's death. He takes a couple more online classes then real in class classes because he doesn't want to see people. Hell picture girls at the school who look like Gwen! How he handles it inside.

And we end the film with him going to a new semester and he's in some must take class and a cute red hair chooses to sit next to him.

Have Mysterio as the villain and have him try to be an actor who was huge but can't get work and he's trying to clinge on to and live in the past which mirrors how a Peter is living in the past.

I'll write the ****ing film for free just please Sony let me write it.

Both in the same year? I personally don't see that happening but would be interesting if Sony did do that

But if anyone is gonna say oh TASM3 will be the last that's certainly premature bias for the most part because no one knows how the sinister 6 will turn out and no one knows how TASM3 will turn out. Let alone if venomcarnage comes out in 2017 too and how that does (if it's even 2017)

He's 20 at the end of TASM2 if I recall right so I would be down for something around 21-24.
