The Amazing Spider-Man The Amazing Spider-Man General Discussion & Speculation Thread - Part 5

for the record I call people who want to keep whit comic book characters white and black comic characters black, purists not racists.
the same people moan about costume changes, its no different to them.

personally speaking in a movie I want the best actor for the job so stuff like that doesn't really bother me. it didn't bother me in the slightest when they made heimdall white when I saw the performance of stringer bell.

I'm agreeing with Neil on this whole thing: Of course as a black man, seeing a black spider-man does fill me with a little bit of pride but at the same time, I don't think every favorite character of mine should be replaced by a different person or a different race, just tell me a good story. As long as it's good, I'll look past any cosmetic change you can bring me because at the end of the day, story is most important. I feel the same way with movies, give me the best actor for the job and it's funny you bring up Stringer, Daniel Craig has already endorsed him to be Bond when he gives up his walther ppk, and I would love to see that. Not because he's black but because the dude is one of the finest actors out right now, black or white.

I would have rejected a white kid as much as this new kid. Race isn't the issue for me but rather them flat out killing Peter Parker.

They couldn't of just introduced another Spider mutated character in the same world? Most of the other incarnations of male Spider-Men have been from the future or some other multiverse.

It would have been more of a step forward and fresh had they done something like I suggested in my second paragraph (having two Spider-Men exit in the same world/continuity; e.g Rhodes/Warmachine) . I guess that wouldn't of been "edgy" enough to drive up sales solely based on a morbid curiosity in seeing Parker die.

So you wouldn't have read Wally West as the Flash in the 80s since Barry is the Flash who dies so Wally can become the main Flash?

I guess having 616 Spidey and two Ultimate Spideys(plus all the Scarlet, Girl, variations is a bit much)

That's different. The Flash is a legacy character, Spider-Man is not.

Legacies start with someone being replaced though? There was no Flash legacy until Barry took the mantle from Jay? We just all grew up in the age after it was accepted.

I just think image of Peter as the universally understandable nerdy character plays a great deal into why they love the character and putting someone else of a different race or gender in is about that relatability. It's not racist, in any way shape or form, but it is racial.

Even if it's just the apprehension of having the fact his hispanic background will play a factor into his character, thus seperating you from him.

And no I'm not buying the USM spidey title, but I stopped around issue 50 with that terrible Wolverine body swapping stuff.:woot:

Personally, I don't want to see Spider-Man become a legacy character, because legacy characters tend to emphasize the powers over the people.

I don't think they should've introduced Miles Morales period. It just wasn't fair to all of the established and beloved characters a part of Ultimate Peter's world.

I would have rathered them shifted focus to Ultimate Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman and kept all of the established characters around.

That's perfectly fine, imo.

I just don't buy the idea that at least as far as the alternate universe, this can't be the Barry taking over as Flash moment for the Ultimate Spiderman.

Peter was a great Ultimate Spidey and will always be the Amazing, Spectacular, one. But this one variation is now Miles "Ulimate" Morales possibly. Or at least Bart version comes around. lol

I guess that's why they didn't. Those are Peter's characters and life. It would feel like a pretender living in the shadow of Peter's established life.

Gotta move out of the house at some point.

I'm noty saying they should have cut and paste miles or someone new in Peter's place, but I would have liked to see the focus shift to Jessica and the other heroes that were regulars in the Spidey books and see how his death affected them in the long term not just abandon them afterwards and shift the focuse to Miles without any further mention of them.

Amen. I don't ever want to see Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man be replaced, in the long-term, because it decentralizes the person and makes it more about the powers.

If I say, "I love Batman", everyone knows I'm talking about Bruce Wayne.
If I say, "I love Green Lantern", that statement is ambiguous as to which person I'm referring to. Is Alan Scott? Hal Jordan? John Stewart? Kyle Raner?

Lol Alan Scott.

& I agree with you. I think Spider-Man should remain Peter Parker. Though, IMO, it's okay to do it in the Ultimate comics since it's a side thing. It's not the main comics, so it doesn't really matter there. Alternate universes are a place to mess around.

I agree, wouldn't mind watching black people portraying the Parker's
It'll be funny for a while, but I'll get used to it

I don't agree with killing Peter but at least it was in the alternate version that they decided to do this and not the main comic.

The main thing I picked up from the trailer -
Spidey is putting on his mask SLOWLY in front of a COP. I'm guessing Captain Stacey does find out who he is in this film.

Wouldn't mind if that's the case.

In the Spectacular Spider-Man, he seemed to have figured it out over the course of several Episodes. If that's the case, I wonder if he really dies and takes his knowledge with him. Or maybe they get a friendly relationship after the Lizard has been stopped.

I think he finds out in the final battle when Spidey wards off the cops just prior to Oscorp Towers. Have it be the character's major revelation. Then his choice would be to let him go and fight the Lizard rather than bringing him in. That seems to always add something in to the final battle, I've actually written something very similar to that beat fairly recently and it beyond works. In the very end, we'll see him and Peter. We'll wonder what's going to happen. That's when they just shake hands or something. Just something very subtle to hint at an upcoming partnership between them which would then lead into the second film. I'm not that surprised he finds out, I just didn't expect it to be shown already. I have no idea who else that cop would be otherwise - he's facing Spidey slowly putting his mask on.

Something I noticed...

I still didn't see any wheatcakes in the trailer :cmad:

I wasn't calling everyone that hated Miles a racist just some of the more close minded people that are out there. When the news first broke about the character there were tons of racist comments on Marvel's facebook page and other comic book fourms. Those are the kinds of fanboys I was refering too. But I still don't really get the hate for the guy considering its just the Ultimate timeline not the 616 timeline. I would be pretty pissed if they randomly killed off the Peter and replaced him with a random new character in the 616 universe. That's the whole point of the Ultimate Universe is to take risks, modernize things etc. So according to purist every version of spider man has to be Peter Parker? I don't agree with that. I didn't hear people complaining about Spider Man 2099, Peter isn't spider man nor is he alive during that time period. But Miles is Spider Man in the Ultimate Universe and its a big deal. Really?

Anyway, maybe I am in a small minority but I am just a Spider Man fan in general. Yes, I prefer Peter Parker as Spider Man but I am not a hater of the other characters that are Spider Man in other time lines. So sorry if it seemed like I was calling anyone here a racist par say, I was just commenting on some of the fanboys that I had personally seen. Anyway, let me get back on topic lol.

So, in case anyone is interested, international trailer is up!

Couple of differences, pretty cool. I think it looks a lot more polished overall.

I love the couple of new snippets, especially when he says "It's my responsibility"

You can feel he has convinced himself it is his responsibility.
