The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Amazing Spider-Man - Tie it in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There has been some talk that Iron Patriot was originally incorporated into Iron Man 3 with the intention of Norman Osborn being in the suit, and that Osborn would have been established as the "Lex Luthor" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As far fetched as it might be, it is believable. Iron Patriot was a random addition to IM3, and if Norman was supposed to be in the suit, it would make sense as to why they kept it in. A last minute situation prevented that from happening.

I dont buy that one bit. as interesting as it may have been. seems kind of a silly idea and a stretch.

They already explained why War Machine wears the Iron Patriot suit. It was never meant to be Osborn.

They did? What was the explanation??

Here:

Kevin Feige said:
"A few years ago in publishing, they created a suit called the Iron Patriot, which was an advanced Iron Man suit painted red, white and blue with a star on it. In the comics it’s a different character that wears it and utilizes it. But we really loved that image; we thought it was a striking image. And coming off of “The Avengers” where you have Captain America and Captain America is such a symbol for The Avengers, we thought it would be fun if the United States wanted to have their own version of that. Of course, Captain America works for the United States, but as he’s more of an Avengers hero the US Government said, “We want our own,” which is why they take War Machine and rebrand him as the Iron Patriot. Shane Black and I [seeing] the Iron Patriot for the first time [was an exciting reveal] and what the guys at Legacy had done with this suit. Each suit gets better and better. The Iron Patriot practical suit that was worn on set is the best practical suit they’ve ever built.”

“Now over the course of the film we learn that there was a nefarious purpose behind that. It’s a great example of how sometimes you take and stay true to a character as pulled from the comics, and sometimes the comics can be the kernel of an idea that you then flesh out and build into something else. One of the best things about being a part of Marvel Studios is that you have the house of ideas; you have the publishing division that comes out with dozens of books a month and we flip through almost every one of those books every month and just pull things and don’t know where they could be used. But you know, a few years ago we pulled out the Iron Patriot and said, “That’s cool. Wouldn’t that be fun to play with that someday?” And you’ll see it in Iron Man 3.”

The real reason for Iron Patriot is because of Don Cheadle. The Iron Man armor RDJ wore in some scenes was much lighter than the metal Cheadle had to wear because of the material it was made of. The reason the Mark II which because War Machine was metal was because they couldnt accurately achieve the metallic reflection of the silver. Therefore they painted it as the Iron Patriot so they could use lighter materials for the prop.

.... Ok, that's true, but not the reason. The real reason is the Captain America thing mentioned above. This was just an interesting factoid that could lead to the change behind the scenes.

I can't honestly see Chris Cooper as the "Lex Luthor of the MCU". I can't even see Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn.

I know that some of you will defend this movie to death, but imo Chris Cooper is absolutely the worst casting choice for Norman when it comes to his look. The guy looks like he's chis is about to fall apart (I know Norman is sick but that is not a good excuse) and just... Norman should have strong facial features, not doughy like Chris Cooper

To be honest, I've never been overly critical of looks when it came to casting. That's why Keaton never bothered me. Yes, Cooper doesn't look one bit like comics Norman. But I think him being a phenomenal actor is a very good thing.

And he could certainly pull off the cold, calculating businessman. If anything, he's too good for the MCU.

If his acting is really good, then I'll accept it. But seriously they need to do SOMETHING on that dough face and the turkey neck

Absolutely agree
Plus I would have prefered someone was late 40s or early 50s so he could do the action sequences
I dont see how someone who is 60 something can do it
Hopefully Norman will have a small role and we'll get a better actor for TASM3

IMO Dafoe's goblin is extremely underrated,he had facial freatures like you would expect from Norman, was extremely fit for his age(maybe the fittest in the cast),could play the creepy/sympathetic/businessman role in the same movie and sometimes in the same scene

There is absolutely no way they've signed Chris f**kin' Cooper to play one of the most high profile Spidey villains and a central figure of this trilogy, only to recast him for the next movie.

And by "get a better actor", you probably mean "get someone who looks more like comics Norman", right?

just because he most likely can ACT like Norman, doesn't mean he should be Norman. With a villain like Norman Osborn, appearance is VERY important. Willem Dafoe may not look like the comic book Norman either, but at least he looked sinister and his face didn't look like it was melting like a candel

Not what I was arguing about, but ok.

I wouldn't say he needs to look exactly creepy, more like a cold calculative & manly look. The performance on the other hand should be creepy in the right parts

In TSSM he isn't exactly "Dafoe creepy" but there's just something a little off about him

It was ashame they had to hide Dafoe's expressive face behind the damn helmet when they did the first Raimi film.

I think they'll cast somebody to play either GG or just voice him judging from Chris Cooper's maniacal laugh and they'll keep Cooper for Norman Osborn part.

You would be surprised by what Hollywood makeup can do these days, people. Shailene Woodley looks a lot more like how MJ is supposed to look like in the latest set photos than she did in photos taken before filming began. They can easily make Cooper look younger and give him the Norman Osborn hairstyle. Plus, remember that Norman in this continuity is apparently sick.

I'm personally really happy with the casting choice. Chris Cooper looks like a very cold and calculating businessman, which is exactly who Norman is. He is also able to act very sinister. I remember seeing him in a movie where he did just that.

As for him being too old for action scenes because he is 60, that is not true. A lot of the actors in Expendables are a lot older than him and they kick ass throughout the whole movie. Heck, Chuck Norris was in his 70's (and still is) while they were filming.

Chris Cooper is a phenomenal actor. But at the end of the day we'll just have to wait to see if he's right for Norman or not.

It sounds believable but unbelievable for the same reason. That reason being that yeah, the last minute situation that changed plans could've been the inclusion of the "terminal Norman Osborn" in ASM but it begs the question of, would've Marvel have known that beforehand?

I guess one can argue that it depends on when the scripts for each were being written but IDK.

If ASM is tied in with ASM2, then they could always have Norman acquire the armor off the black market or by some other means in the future. Depends on what happens to it after its [BLACKOUT]stolen[/BLACKOUT] in Iron Man 3.

Seriously? That is your big complaint about Chris Cooper being cast as Norman Osborn?

Absolutely agree

Why would Cooper even need to do his own stunts if the Goblin would be in costume during the fight sequences? We wouldn't even see it as him anyway. Would you really want a new actor for TASM3? At least wait to decide on that until you've seen the movie. I hate casting changes (unless they are absolutely necessary).

Dafoe's Goblin is underrated, and has been forgotten after 10 years. I think the 2002 film overall needs more appreciation. After the Dark Knight and the Avengers, people forgot how amazing that movie was (and still is IMO).

There was a story that hit online today that Avengers 2 begins filming early next year.

With that said, if ASM2 is in fact being tied to the MCU and if Spider-Man is to be in The Avengers 2, we can expect an announcement at this years SDCC, or sometime before filming gets underway on Avengers 2 seeing as it would be extremely difficult, virtually impossible, for Marvel Studios to keep something such as this secret as the character would show up on set at some point and details about the film are sure to leak.

They'd probably still keep the details of how it ties in a guarded secret, but the tie in it self would in fact be announced.
