I know that the flag shot in spider-man 3 is pretty much hated : considered corny, cheesy, unnecceasry and of course, alienating to other countries...


But what were peoples initial reactions when they saw that shot in the actual trailer??

I was indifferent, I didn't react one way or another. I just wanted to get to see the final battle!

I... god forbid... just wanted to get some peoples reactions on it. I once remember it being a point of controversy. Plus the strength of Spider-man is that he is universial, and i personally believe Sam raimi expressed that well with his movies.

I agree that it was a little forced. Although there's always a flag on a construction site where it's placed is at times varied depending on the site. They're usually on top of cranes, but there could always be more than one.

I'm not American, I have no problem with showing the American flag in an American movie, with an American hero, set in America.. But it just felt like they had went out of their way to write that scene in, when it could have been done in a far better way..

I generally have no problems with a little patriotism in movies...
Spider-Man is an American hero, this is totally true. We must say it is an American director and an American film too!! There is absolutely no problems with that. The problem is: it was big. SO big, pushing on the audience (Spidey is American and will save other American BE PROUD PEOPLE!! BE PROUD!!).

I had absolutely no problems at all with the flag in S-M 1. It was there, subtle, passed his message, it was in fact quite kewl! But here in S-M 3...it's just...

Pride is great, but making it this big and pushing it this hard on others is not.

Plus: Spider-Man is himself a moving American flag (WHITE eyes, RED and BLUE overall) and it looks great!

Patriotism is good, but there can sometimes be too much of a good thing.

It doesn't take away from the movie in any way.

My reaction was shock.

Not when I saw the shot but when I saw the reaction. I don't get it. I'm an Irishman, born and bred, (on the playground is where I spent most of my days) and I didn't have the slightest problem with it and honestly can't even think of a reason why it would bother anyone short of them being from Iraq.

It was stupid and forced. I even found it offensive. The symbolism of "AMERICA IS HERE, TO SAVE THE DAY!" just pissed me off to no ends. It was one of the worst shots in the film, and when saying that while reviewing Spider-man 3, you know you got problems.

I'd say leaving Spider-man 3 has got to be the most disappointed I've ever been after seeing a film. I'm not calling it the worst film I've ever seen, not by a long shot, but definiately most disappointing.

The American Flag scene was great and I really don't see how it was unnecessary. Besides, it's quick and even though Spidey takesp lacei n america and there was a shot of the American Flag, it doesn't mean Spidey isn't a worldwide character.

The idea that the flag shot held some kind of "America is the savior of the world" implications is a far reaching conclusion, to say the least.

As Immortalfire said, Spider-Man is an American hero. New York City (where American flags aren't exactly a rare sight) is one of the quintessential American cities. The shot only meant to show an American hero defending his American city. I don't know why or how you felt this was offensive.

I pretty much hate these movies but in its weak defense I'll say this, NYC has US flags all over the place, it's no joke. When I spent 2 weeks in Manhattan, I saw more US flags than I did pigeons.

However, where the film loses credibility is, that there was no consistency of these flags all over NY. So, when we see spidey running and leaping in front of the flag, it really is embarrassing, cringe-worthy and cheesy enough to make one lactose intolerant for the remainder of the movie.

Please...the guy didn't decide to act until after wasting 5 minutes watching all the anarchy unfold on the tv screen and finding out that the hostage they had mentioned a minute earlier was actually MJ. This American hero wasn't there to save his American city. He was only there to save MJ's ****ty American ass.
