Superman Returns The American Way?

Thanks, didn't even notice that. I need to change it anyway, been there for a while.

PERRY WHITE
Does he still stand for truth, justice and the GAY WAY?

Are you joking?

Look guys, these political attitudes were probably why they took out "the American way" part of the slogan. But when Donner directed his Superman movie it came out after the Vietnam War. National pride was pretty low, but that movie helped Americans feel good about themselves. I don't know if rest of the World liked America after that, but I'm sure they liked the spectacle.

Superman Returns doesn't address any of the current political topics. Those images Clark saw on the TV could have happened in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, or Africa. But we don't see him do anything about them in the movie. This movie was trying to make us believe in the inate goodness of people. Also it said how much people need a hero everyone can take as an example. Anybody who's watched the news, reads history, knows about America's crap. But Superman is supposed to bring us past that, to become better.

Therefore, since they avoided the current politics it's like, 'no harm, no foul'. Jackie Chan is from Hong Kong. Robin Hood is English. Sinbad is Persian. The heroes of Star Wars aren't from Earth, but we admire them all.

True, but they said the sister died...which would require Jon and Martha take legal guardianship of the child through official adoption papers...and tada...Supes is offcially a legal American citizen :D

But he wasnt the son of their sister, so they lied on all the initial papers and forms :p

Just because he helps people all over the world, doesn't mean he's citizen of those countires. Heck...the U.S. military does the same thing. He's an American citizen......raised, and pays taxes in America. He just has a global perspective when it comes to helping people.

he was an illegal immigrant.gained citizenship based ona tissue of lies.

He was a immigrant who doesn't live off of tax payers dollars, earns his own income, and saves people worldwide. That excuses him from being your average fense-hopper.

Did they give him the job because he was an immigrant who would take less money and work more hours for the job? OR, did they give him the job because he's a talented and hard working reporter?

PC Superman = dum. :down

If you're gonna have the line in the movie, do the real thing, or leave it out all together.

I'd like to know how many in here, especially the "omitting of American Way is no big deal" crowd, are old enough to remember saying the Pledge of Allegiance in school. I'm not talking about having it played over the loudspeaker either.

Me. I'm willing to bet that I've got you by at least a few years.

Those who argue that "Superman isn't American because he just happened to land here" are not seeing the whole picture. Superman was created by Americans, Superman is associated with America (whether the liberals like it or not), so what is the beef with having American Way in that famous or now infamous line of Superman folklore?

The reason being is that this country is so divided (and PC) right now that every single, solitary word must be thoroughly scrutinized to the point of being ridiculous.

Where were all these anti-patriotism factions when Christopher Reeve is flying the American Flag back to the White House in Superman II? This is just one example at how completely and utterly ridiculous this country has become. Patriotism is now a thing of the past....such a shame.

Long live Old Glory.

God Bless America.

And as much as the liberals hate it...

Superman fights "for truth, justice, and The American Way!"

As much as the conservatives hate it ... Superman is an international figure. He fights for what's right not for one nations way of doing business.

Patriotism is not a thing of the past but the kind of bravado that insists on such minor things as not letting a fictional character evolve past a phrase that is no longer completely applicable should be.

Liberal with a responsible job and a longer association with the character than a lot of posters here.

thank you.

I heard somewhere that it was a decision made by Singer himself. If thats true, I see it as a major blunder on his part, and he should have known better. Thats why he is paid the big bucks as director. He needs to make the right decisions.

It would have been fine to just leave the phrase out entirely. But to replace "The American way" with "and all that stuff" because of political motivations was a blaitant error. Its very obvious and draws attention where none needs to be drawn - that is away from the plot of the film. A good director should not make that mistake.

well, obviously hes keeping his immigrant status secret. dont want to get slung out. as for the rest, i have no idea of his salary and contracted hours........have you?
he does seem to put in awful long hours tho, and he doesnt seem to have changed his suits since the late 70s...obviously not on much pay

It's not a question of being liberal or conservative. Superman resides privately in America. His secret identity is American too. He had an American upbringing.

"Frankly the hours were somewhat longer than I expected, Lois, but then... meeting you and Jimmy and Mr. White - on the whole I think it's swell"

But that seems to be everybody. Everyone works long hours.

Plus he has the money to send half his paycheck to his mother on a weekly basis.

Did you see the date on the suit?

If this was the only groaner line in Supes Returns, well it's a whole hell of a lot better than what happens to frogs.

I think the majority of the world views that Bush is the one who is wrong while most are infact sympathetic for the American people. The french alone got banned from protesting Bush when he arrived in Paris for a short visit, so that proves the world isn't blind.

America bless God!

I'm more pissed that the movie never made any reference to him being more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. I wanted to see him stand on a railtrack while a steam 1930s black locomotive rushes to him and bounces off his chest. I wanted to see him leap tall buildings. Not fly, LEAP!

Man, the movie sucks.

With the bank robbery scene, we already have him flying past the bullets and stopping them.

Faster than a speeding bullet

During the earthquake scene at the end you could have had him stop an E train that was headed towards a break in the track.

More powerful than a locomotive.

It would have been cool to see Young Clark leap over the house then the barn, then over the barn again till he flies straight up, gets scared, doubts himselfs, then falls through the ceiling and flies right above the ground.

Leaps over tall buildings in a single bound.

But there was not E train back in the 50s. It was those huge, powerful, black steam engines!

And I didn't wanna see Clark jump. I want to see Superman jump like he did in the 50s radio show!!
