The Art of Civility Revisited

I agree,I would be lying if I said it was the end all, to be all to me.It wasn't,but it was pretty good..

Although Spiderman and Spiderman 2 aren't the best movies in the world, there are flaws, I think that they are now the standard for superhero movies. It used to be STM, but now Spidey has taken the reigns.

I have spidey 2 right up there with S:TM,then Batman Begins, then Spidey 1...EDIT: I suppose the reason I hold S:TM in such high regard is, I saw it when I was 6 in the theater, and it had a big impact on me. Its hard to replace memories like that.

Nothing can replace a memory. Unfortunately, the only Superman Movie I saw on the big screen besides Returns was Superman 3.

You poor soul.at least it wasnt S:IV

someone tell me what's going on.. Lee you alright man?

I think he's well and good. Just sick of the garbage around here like most of us are. Either that, or he went ban crazy and banned himself...

I responded to your question in the other thread but you had already left. The mods said they are tired of the fighting and such,so they closed the threads.EDIT: IMO, I think they were right to do so,you couldnt say anything without someone trying to put you down.thats both sides.

Oh the attacks and such. I get it. It must have still been going on when I left. Don't ban yourself, Lee.

ya,it was getting pretty ugly....

S:TM will always be the benchmark...if only because NO ONE, Christian Bale included, has EVER given a comic related performance like Christopher Reeve.

I would bet the house that Gyllanhaul would have given just a good a performance as McGuire.....that's how common an actor for Spiderman is. (I'll bet even Routh could have done okay given that material) EMO EMO EMO!!! Right?

But, Gyllanhaul or McGuire as Superman?.......Sorry, But i just don't EVER see that. No matter how good their resume stands. I ask you to convice me otherwise...A teary eyed delivered 'Punch me I bleed' to the girl of your dreams doesn't quite cut it on the SR boards. :o

In short, Spiderman 1 and 2 were entertaining movies. Trying to look for anything beyond surface level material is a mere waste of time IMO. They tried, and just couldn't get it right. To those who like it, more power to ya. But don't try and tell me that the Spiderman movies are some kind of philosophical excerpts that defy all logic convention.

I think it was a good idea for the mods to close the BO thread. I'd pop in for some factual information (ie, the numbers and stats) and I'd have to dig through so many OT and personal arguments.

Maybe we could make a BO thread where only Carp Man (since he does a lot of the number-crunching) could post the numbers, and only the numbers. I've seen it done on another board I frequent (a figure skating board, haha), where we're following a live event that isn't internationally televised and one poster would post the real-time happenings and impressions, without the hullaboo of other posters butting in or cheering or booing and crap. Just an idea....

I think the negative vibe on SR (as well as this board) happened pretty early on. Even last year, I felt the negative vibe just permeating from any news that came out about this movie. SR was doomed from the start I say, from bad karma. :p

I think a lot of people, Lee included take this place too seriously. Its just an internet message board. The world isn't going to stop because someone insults another member. Just like the world isn't going to stop because someone likes or dislikes Superman Returns. The sooner we all learn that and lighten up, the more civil this place'll be.

The B.O. thread I thought should remain open for it had very good discussion. the few scuffles I witnessed weren't anything major, but I don't know... I'm thinking the mods are agitated and want a vacation from it so they just did what they felt was right by them.

Carpman's sig will probably suffice for B.O updates, as long as he keeps posting somewhere consitantly.

No offense, but That assertion makes me terribly sick. Did no one see my GSAC thing? A group I founded to hopefully remind people that singer deserves a chance before having fruit and veggies tossed at him. The "vibe" was incredibly positive, even after the news of the kid throwing pianos. Saying it was doomed from the start is completely baseless. ...I believe this is an attempt to make people feel guilty.... That's not going to work since I do know a lot of those who were dissapointed welcomed it with open arms until they saw it for what it was. We couldn't have been sucking on singer's (better stay civil) thumb any more than we were before this movie came. Only a few like old guy were the contrarians of the board. I guess you could call them that. Then there was the Dosv which I decided to join myself to protect singer from the internet. But I resigned after not really liking the movie and my fellow members were just being jerks about it.

He tried and did good enough job, but I still think keaton's the stronger performer as the bat. Bale's not quite there yet. I'm sure he'll be better in the next one the dark knight though. but for begins The inconsistancy of his voice stands out too much as well as the way he seems too dull at times, for me anyway. I think Hellboy's Ron Perlman's given a performance so perfect it could rival reeve's.

I just noticed that I posted Spiderman and Spiderman 2 ARE the best movies in the world, I meant aren't. Either way, I think those movies are the new benchmark because it translated well into box office appeal, not that STM didn't, because I think with inflation it would have made 320-340million if released now. I am not saying that the dialogue was better or the acting was better, I am saying it is the benchmark because it brought in all crowds, something SR did not.

WoW, I thought I was the only one that liked keaton's batman better.Bale was good though, and hopefully the Dark Knight will take the throne from keaton for me.

I thought Keaton was great but I thought Bale surpassed him, and was much more gritty. On the other hand, I didn' think that Routh surpassed Reeve but he is Superman to me.

There's 1 issue that has not been addressed pertaining to civility, if I may bring the thread back on topic: People posting in a manner that puts across "I myself am more intelligent than you are because you do not share my opinion". It is a simple thing to discuss and debate a topic without that condescending, "Holy-er Than Thou" approach.

And I am not saying I have not taken that approach either. I'm just saying it REALLY is not necessary to do. In the end, it is ONLY a messageboard.

Good point Dog, we all do it, me included. When you can hide behind a mask you can accomplish anything.

Exactly. And claiming "superiority" to others on a messageboard REALLY isn't much of an accomplishment.

This place seems as quiet as a graveyard after the "execution" of the 2 threads.

A few simple rules to try to keep;

Never ever focus on the one who is writing. Focus on what he is writing. It's like playing soccer, you achieve little by kicking the player, kick the god damn ball :)

And try to keep on topic. There are a lot of interesting off topic discussions one can be tempted to make in a thread about something totally different, but the thing is all in all off topic ruins threads and lowers the quality.

And maybe the forum needs more moderators. There will always be users who don't care about the forum guidelines. Delete posts, split out off topic to own threads and kick out users who constantly trolls, flames or spams. It is also an idea to close threads temporary and "clean" them up. Then open it again, post a warning that any OT/flaming etc and then you get banned and it will probably help.

All in all, one should not waste ones own time, and others, by posting what you think of other users. Thats just not interesting and its ruining discussions. Users who just has to flame others should be kicked out instantly.

It's sort of weird how thick (or thin in this case) skinned people can be. I can understand the necessity in terms of language and monitoring of materials that could be deemed 'offensive' (which I find offensive), but I honestly couldn't care less if I get called names, get banned, get ridiculed, be proven wrong, be disagreed with etc.

That's not to say that I'm going to proclaim all out war on your little pseudo goverment with it's policies, rules and procedures, but I would just like to make vocal that you need to be careful that not every little indescretion is reported for the heinous crime of not adhering to the guidelines of your little club.

If there are to rules and guidelines to be set up, submit them to a moderator and wait for a sticky thread. People shouldn't need to trawl through pages and pages of discussion in the hopes of finding what users have deemed acceptable behavior in that particular thread on that particular subject on that particular day.

I fail to see how 12 pages of head nodding in agreement is the answer.
