The Atheism Thread - Part 7

I did something really strange this Easter. I watched the entire "The Bible" miniseries on Netflix. If it's point was to make me a much stronger atheist, it succeeded.

I have a love hate relationship with Canada. Canada has given me great wrestlers in the past, but the Canadian idea of bacon is blasphemy to me.

Hey, we have both types of bacon in Canada!:oldrazz:

Also, our version of bacon is delicious. Some people think it's just ham by another name, but it's more delicious than ham for reasons unknown.

Canadian bacon isn't bad, but they should call it something like Super Ham. That would be cool.

Super Ham? When did one of Noah's sons get meta-powers?

Canadian bacon is a Canadian lie. Like everything else from there especially Bieber! :argh:

It's not ham! Bacon!

Although...it would be cool to have Superham for breakfast one day.

As for Bieber...we're rejecting him. He's American now. Enjoy!

Did not know you were Canadian MrsK. You poor thing. JK :o :p

And we've already started the paper work to deport Bieber. He's your problem again! :argh:

You're sending him back to us? Is this what we get for bringing you Terminator, Terminator 2 and Aliens? :oldrazz:

I was going through my PhotoBucket earlier and came across an old photo. It's the sign in front of the church I live next to. Thought you guys would enjoy.

I would nourish those shrubs with my rich, infidel urine.

I think they wrote that wrong. They meant "Common sense vs Religion"

That sign doesn't make any sense...

'Creation science'. God did it. Science is over. No more study lest you uncover things you were not meant to know!

On that note, A bill in South Carolina, proposed in response to an 8 year old girl's suggestion that the Woolly Mammoth be named South Carolina's State fossile has be been derailed by creationists in the state.

In letters to her local representatives, Olivia asked that the woolly mammoth be made the official state fossil, because mammoth teeth dug up by slaves in a South Carolina swamp in 1725 were among the first vertebrate fossils discovered in North America.

Her senator, Kevin Johnson, told CBS News this week that he thought a bill honoring the request "would just fly through the House and through the Senate." But the bill is currently languishing in the House, months after it was proposed in January, because some lawmakers with creationist beliefs have objected on religious grounds.

The original text of the bill simply read: "The woolly mammoth is designated as the official state fossil of South Carolina."

In its most recent iteration, which was shot down in a vote on April 9, the bill had been amended to read as follows:

"The Columbian Mammoth, which was created on the Sixth Day with the other beasts of the field, is designated as the official State Fossil of South Carolina and must be officially referred to as the 'Columbian Mammoth', which was created on the Sixth Day with the other beasts of the field."

Really? I mean really?

Oh for ****s sake. How about just change it to Batman because that makes as much sense.

...I f***ing hate creationists. They have no place in any worthwhile conversation

How about things just be called by either their scientific names or common names, none of this my religion is the right one bull****?

I'm afraid I don't understand. I didn't think the Columbian Mammoth designation was the issue here. Does that name hold any religious significance?

They're causing this because they demand it to be written in a certain way to reflect their religion.

They agree on having the mammoth be the state fossil, fine, they want it to be the Columbian Mammoth specifically but also demand it be officially be focused in on the religious crap.

Ok. I'm going to try to repress most of my rant in effort to be more sensitive than I usually am regarding this topic...

I hate things like that. I hate when religion is mixed into anything "official."

No matter how meager the "official" thing may be, it is still harmful to society to add religion to anything official.

Religion is unproven hocus pocus and should NEVER be included in anything official. Never, never. It's not good as far as promoting an informed way of life. It's dark age, archaic nonsense and should never be integrated into anything official lest we all go back to the witch trial days and hang each other.

Right, so this isn't an issue with the name at all.

That's why I was confused. Your post made it seem as though it was the name, "Columbian Mammoth," rather than the specific wording of the bill, that was at issue.

Why not just call mammoths "sixth day hairy-phants"?
