I think every minor detail used in each movie connecting them, was a necessary component needed to set up the Marvel Movie Universe. with all it's super powered people and advanced aliens civilizations. Now that it is done, every movie afterwards should be able to stand on it's own.

I feel they can stand on their own already, adding a few seconds here and there that gives you the feeling of a broader universe doesn't take away from the plot really.

I'm not sure if The Avengers is really to blame for the rushed second half of Captain America. Even without the Avengers movie coming out, they'd had the problem of getting Cap from the POW camp to the final confrontation with Red Skull in the 3rd act. And, as Comic readers now: If you have the fight with Red Skull, you have a freezing in the arctic scene, because that's how the story goes.
Maybe they shouldn't have used Red Skull in the first movie at all, but Zemo instead, but I can imagine how fans would've reacted to THAT

Hawkeye was essentially a faceless SHIELD agent in Thor just like the big dude he wrestled with.
