The Dark Knight Rises The Avengers will be direct competition in 2011

It is not looking as good as I thought it would be before we got some of the scene details, it is still on my list to watch movie but I have lowered my expectations.

The scale of the movie is not exactly what I expected.

How do you know what the scale is?

Again, you should check out Whedon's recent interview. He discusses his pitch for the finale and how he assumed it would be too grand and expensive to get made. Then he says that's exactly what they shot.

Even if it was released there, it might not fare well against TASM considering Spider-Man is undoubtedly the most popular cbm character in the Asian market, especially China.

It also doesn't help that one of India's most popular actors is in TASM.

That is a pretty good point.

Avengers comes out a good 2 and a half months before TDKR, there is literally no competition, I seriously doubt the majority of people who go to watch Avengers won't watch TDKR, and vice versa. There's no brand loyalty when it comes to good films.

Agreed. But yeah, TASM is much more competion, moreso than expected when it comes to Box Office.

TASM has the best release date spot than both The Avengers and TDKR as there are no other films except for one hard R crime drama releasing that week.

So, imagine if Transformers 3, which had the same spot last year that TASM has this year, had no other competition for box office that week and remember that without that, TF3 STILL broke a billion in 2 1/2 weeks.

TASM's problem is that it's yet another telling of his origin story. Not everyone is clamoring to see that again so soon.

And the fact that Irrfan Khan, an Indian actor is in TASM but still TDKR will do OK in India, I guess as a portion of the movie was shot there (in Jodhpur)

Internationally I expect spidey to make a boatload, as you said, Spidey is quite iconic in the eastern market, and a lot of what turns off western audiences to this current iteration is irrelevant to those markets. (more or less)

Yet I wouldn't go so far into expecting it to join the billion club just yet, I would expect something along the line of inception money, rather than spider-man 1 money. There were just too many factors and variables going into that film in 2002 that this one dosen't have (fresh concept, early in the superhero film boom, post 9/11, literally no real competition etc)

It certainly has the potential, but i doubt it, not for the first film in the series, as we talk it still has the least amount of actual buzz out of the "big three".

True but the second trailer has generated enough interest where majority are willing to give it a chance, which they weren't ready to do after the teaser.

TDKR will do fine overseas but I just wouldn't be shocked or expect that it will dominate TASM as much as we think it will in the Asian markets.

China is an interesting case for TDKR because of Bale. His thing with the government might be one of the reasons why it will not be released but at the same time, his sudden popularity there because of The Flowers of War will definitely help if it is released in China.

A Sony pictures movie has a good chance of getting a china release as compared to WB or Disney movie. We will have to wait and watch to see If TDKR gets released there.

True. I don't quite to expect to make join the Billion club. Whiel the viral marketing, with the trailer and the TASM logo appearing on national monument worldwide, has DEFINITELY given it more hype/buzz than it had before, it still has much to do before its a serious Billionnaires Club contender.

I would say its closer to the amount of buzz The Avengers had though.

True. Losing that market while TASM has it will definitely make that battle very interesting.

China brings in ALOT of revenue for cbms.

No. No it isn't. The Avengers is the first big movie of the summer. That particular weekend has always yelded great op weekend results. The original Spider-man and Spider-man 3 occupied this same spot. The Dark Knight Rises is in the same super sweet spot that fostered the growth of its predecessor and Inception; as well as the massive later Harry Potter movies.

I don't trust whatever Stan Lee says, similarly I don't trust what Whedon says. :o

True, TASM finds itself wedged in between two behemoths, if it can find itself a great bit of revenue domestically...I wouldn't be suprised at all, but i would be if it flourished to the heights Avengers and TDKR will reach.

Also to take note is that Avengers and TDKR both have recent sucesses working for it, The Raimi films will certainly help TASM, but it will also damage it, a double edged blade if anything.

Very true. I don't expect it to have low numbers like every one does. I expect it to gross a very good sum.

A billion would be very much a shock.

BTW, TASM has its release dates/locations out already (has for months) and I think it has a wider release than TDKR and perhaps The Avengers.

Not sure. I can't find theirs.

I wouldn't trust anything that comes out of the Marvel Studio camp, not while their film is being released anyway. Considering how tumultuous that place seems to be with studio/director relations. I just hope my boy Whedon wasn't there on the first day getting the job excitedly going over his ideas and pitches, and Kevin Feige just drops a bag on money in front of him and tells him to shut up and follow his lead.

.

LOL.

Nothing against Whedon but as Sharkboy has pointed out Marvel has a way to manipulate its directors and as long as they are doing a Marvel movie we cannot expect honest answers.

I would like to see a sequel to Serenity by Whedon, or Whedon directed Star Trek movie.

Whedon is my boy! he has the skill to take the most boring and commonplace genre concepts and inject a specific brand of wit and heart into them. Angel, Buffy, Serenity, Firely, Dr Horrible, i just hope avengers makes a billion, and it's resulting sequels, so studios are tricked into trusting Joss with making like 20 different TV shows and tons of high budget genre films. That is certainly a dream I've had since the late 90's.

I just don't want him to be another Marvel Studios casualty.

I never got into the other Whedon stuff but I was all over Buffy and Angel (and Dollhouse for a short while). And for those, I want Whedon to do well.

Whedon is not the type of director to just take that stuff laying down.

If it was that type of situation, I think he would have walked away.
