The Dark Knight Rises The Avengers will be direct competition in 2011

That's what I'm saying for years. This is one of the most risky projects in recent film history and it's only the beginning. Still, some people claim Marvel Studio would take no risks. :whatever:
Why did you revive this thread, Mr. Necromancer? I didn't want to be reminded of all the marvel bigotry on these boards :csad:

I'm not really much of a Marvel fan, with the exception of Spider-Man (and to be honest I'm not even looking foward to that movie very much). Even if TDKR wasn't coming out this summer, I still wouldn't really be all that eager for The Avengers cuz I'm just not a fan of any of those superheroes. Just personal opinion. Although the realization at this point is that it is a superhyped film for this summer. However, it comes out in May while TDKR comes out end of July. By that time all the hype for Avengers willl be well overdue, so I think Rises has nothing to worry about.
 
Yeah, and chances are TDKR's third trailer will be attatched to the film like TDK was with Iron Man.
 
^ Well if that's the case then this'll be the 1st time I'll watch a movie for a DKR trailer and have a general interest for the actual movie :woot: Hopefully by then (if not sooner) there will be a good amount of tv spots to further feed the fire :word:
 
I wish I could have that experience. Unfortunately, Britain are slowpokes when it comes to releasing new trailers to the theater. I'd be lucky if the teaser played.
 
I'm Day one for Avengers, and Day's 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 & 11 for TDKR. I love both Franchises, they want my money, I will give it to them. :D
 
Doesn't matter much. I will watch both. I honestly thought the idea for an Avengers movie sucked until I saw the first trailer. Joss Whedon seems to be the perfect guy for the job on this one.

For TDK I thought the series was awesome since Begins.

No it won't. Let me tell you something, Batman appeals to people outside this comic genre. I know lots of people who will see Batman who you couldn't pay to see "The Avengers". (I consider myself one of them) Batman is like an American legend who beats ass, people love that. Thor and ****, cool for the kids and people who want that but TDKR will out perform these Avenger guys.
 
Considering the two films are essentially three months apart, I really wouldn't consider them in "direct" competition with each other. In fact, I wouldn't say they're in competition of any kind - except the imaginary one perpetrated by certain fans from each franchise and the silly need for their film to be "better" than the other (whether that means critic ratings or box office totals).

I know TDKR will outgross the avengers. I personally cannot wait to see it crush Marvel's crappy, loud movies with their scarlett johansen and numerous explosions
 
I wouldn't be so sure about TDKR out grossing the Avengers. I mean, yea with the numbers that the Dark Knight pulled in, it's highly likely. But, they are two completely different movies. I'm a huge biased Batman fan, but when I saw the Avengers trailer, the scope of it should get anyone excited. To see all those heroes huddled together is pure awesomeness, which is why I still believe in a Justice league movie.

The Dark Knight Rises will more than likely be less action, more story and thought or meaning. Not to say the Avengers won't have a theme, but with Marvels history, I'm betting it will be thinner than TDKR message. Nolan always seems to find a way to put themes in his films with deeper meanings. The Avengers will most likely appeal to mainstream audiences who just want to see a group of heroes kick ass. Best way to put it is that TDKR might ask you to think about themes in todays society while the Avengers will make you want to be 10 yrs old again so you can dress up and play Avengers in your back yard with friends.

I'm looking forward to both.

There's a built in advantage for The Avengers $$$ since 3D showings are numerous unlike IMAX and the tickets are more expensive, yes?
 
Good point, the only difference will be repeat viewings. I spent so much money watching BB and TDK in theaters several times. If the Avengers flakes or is only "meh", than TDKR could catch up easily.

What is the point of cheering for another CBM to fail? All it does is hurt the chances of other CBMs being made.

Yes, but since TDK was released, more theaters have these IMAX-Lite screens, which is just a slightly larger screen, not a real-deal IMAX 4 story high screen.

And they are charging full IMAX prices.

I seen Super-8 on one of these screens - it was cool, but no where near the real thing.
 
I have to admit, as a Batman fan, I would prefer TDKR to outgross Avengers. But I want both movies not only to do well at the BO, but to be great, if not incredible movies. Because I like both DC and Marvel (even if I prefer DC), I like super heroes movies, and the more great movies I see, the happier I am.

This is the correct mentality to have.

I find it hilarious that people view Avengers as a brainless action movie without seeing it. And that it is somehow a lesser movie because it's more about escapism, superhero mythology and fantasy rather than deadly serious, relatable to the real world and has social commentaries.

Neither approach is inherently good or bad, it's all about the execution.

For example, TDKR will obviously have strong commentaries on the economic crisis etc. Does that somehow make it a better or more credible film than the Avengers which is going for a more escapist, fantasy tone?

The answer is no. As it comes down to execution.

I also find it laughable when people don't understand what depth means in terms of movies.

A movie doesn't have to have these political/social themes or commentaries to be deep or intelligent. A movie isn't automatically deep or intelligent because it has those things.

A movie can be deep and intelligent in the way it uses characters and developes them. Or it can have more universal themes like the family dynamic in Thor or the idea that it's a person's heart, not the size of their muscles, that makes a hero like in Captain America. Or in the case of Avengers, this group of mis-matched people getting past their differences with each other and in Steve Roger's case, being a man out of time, to save the world.

If done well, the story of Steve Rogers, living legend of WWII long thought dead, being brought into the 21st century, to discover the women he loved and all his brothers in arms are dead, and also that he is needed to lead a team of an eccentric scientist who turns into a rage monster, a narcissistic playboy and a ****ing god, against an invading force of aliens led by said gods brother, can be just as compelling and "deep" as any story about Batman.
