The bad start of summer 2010

Summer 2010 isn't doing bad because of the movies themselve. Alice in Wonderland made $1 billion worldwide and everyone hated it. The real reason is the economy. People just can't afford to go to the theaters every weekend. Iron Man 2 did good. It's gonna gross $300 million domestically. Shrek Forever After is holding up quite well. $154 million in 13 days is fine. But to expect record-breaking box office every weekend in this economy is crazy. If you recall, summer 2009 wasn't that different. Only two movies that summer grossed over $300 million domestically. Compare that to 2007 when there was four. Or 2008 when there was three.

The worst since 2001 (can you name a summer movie from 2001?

Um...Shrek, Planet of the Apes, American Pie 2, um, Fast and the Furious?

What we're saying is that there are no movies that we as internet folk want to see. Average Joe on the street will go see Get him to the Greek, Marmaduke, and what not.

2010 as a whole has been and looks like it will be a pretty lame year. The one I was looking forward to the most was Iron man 2 and it was kind of forgettable.
As a fan of the franchise, I'm looking forward to Predators, which looks at least set to be one of the better entries into that franchise (AVP movies included).
Inception is the only one I'm still clinging to as a possible knock-out. Beyond that, I'm just hoping something I didn't see coming will surprise me and be good....other-wise I'm holding out for 2011. And then 2012, which looks to be a year that could possibly rival the goodness that was 2008.
....ah yes, 2008. What a year.

Actually, they won't. Toy Story 3 is like the only mass appeal movie left this summer. Everything else is fanboy (Inception), fangirl (Twilight 3), niche (Scott Pilgrim), and sleeper-hit (Despicable Me) driven.

Alot of ppl like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Napolean Dynamite too, but those movies were meh. IM2 was a step back from the original. Usually in sequels, they showcase more of the hero in costume, and give us more action..not less - which was the case in IM2.
It wasn't even necessarily the action. Its just that they didn't up the ante at all in terms of character development or story. I felt that I was watching IM1 again.
Usually in superhero movies the sequel gets a huge push when it comes to plot and the stakes are so much a higher. Case in point with X-men 2, Spider-man 2, The Dark Knight, etc.
For Iron Man 2 I felt like the stakes were actually lower ...couple that with a rehash of themes through out the movie and you have one 200 million dollar borefest.

Also to people that think Last airbender will break out...:hehe:
The movie looks terrible and pretty cheap. Which is sad, I absolutely LOVE the show and they could've easily made a Lord of the Rings type trilogy had they hired someone other than a one hit wonder.

Isn't there a Harry Potter movie coming out this year?

Up didn't sell more tickets than the Incredibles, but it did outgross it, but not adjusted for inflation, and not with the 3D boost. Still Up was under 300 mil.

TS3 will be a success I'm sure, but I don't see that it's going to be the biggest film of the summer.

Well, tickets sold maybe not, but money wise it did (which is what matters in success at the end of the day). You have a point about that number not being adjusted for inflation, but they're only five years apart, can inflation really account for a $100 million difference?

I think Toy Story 3 has more potential to do that than you and some others are giving it credit for. Pixar has grown as both a company and a box office draw, and the Toy Story movies are looked at with nothing but fondness by...more or less everyone really. Factored in with 3D and IMAX sales, I'll be pretty surprised if it's not pretty damn huge. I think the potential of it being the biggest of the summer is fairly high.

yeah for a start, its not really known by the general public, and second Shamalayn hasnt made a good movie in nearly a decade.

you are underestimating it's popularity my friend there were people who thought Avatar was TLA

also alot and i mean alot of tLA fan base is made of female's as well as kids and adults

having Twilight's Rathbone has even got Twilight fans excited and it just looks awesome

Also not to mention the latest trailer was liked the most of those attached to IM2.It has been advertised big time from The Superbowl to the Winter Olympics to the NICK Kid's Choice Awards to American Idol Finale. It will also be promoted at MTV Movie Awards this weekend and TV Spots play daily On NICK for kids to see.

McDonald's is also gonna promote it just like it did with Shrek 4

I don't have the exact numbers infront of me, but Incredibles is 136 on Boxoffice Mojo's all time adjusted for inflation list, where Up is 159.

Think back to 2004. Do you remember paying $10 for 2D, $15 for 3D, and $17 for IMAX 3D? No, right? It was like...8 bucks...and 7 with a student ID.

Hm, well, it might be then. I'm no economist or anything, but $100 million box office difference over a 5 year difference.

Though going to Boxoffice Mojo it seems we're both wrong, Finding Nemo was their biggest film box office wise. It made nearly $850 million and is 65 overall box office adjusted for inflation.

But anyway, that's regardless to TS3. I still think it has the potential to be the biggest box office for this summer, maybe even the year.

No, I never paid those kind of prices for tickets then or now. I live in a smaller part of the South, and movie prices tend to be slightly lower (The local theater here is $8 for regular hours, $6 for matinee, and has no 3D option that I know of). I don't even know of any theaters that give student discounts for prices either...

Yeah, a co-worker and I were talking about IM2 in that it was more just an effort to keep the Marvel consciousness out there. It really didn't do anything to advance the characters or the story, so maybe it was something that was put together without any real passion, in order to keep the public aware. It was so full of shout outs to what is to come. And most of the heavy lifting (casting, concept designs and test) was already done, so it would be a lot easier to crank out another Iron Man movie than have Thor or Cap ready in time.
...so that's what we got...nothing special.
I still wouldn't say Marvel has failed yet. I mean, Iron Man was great, Incredible Hulk was good, and Iron Man 2 was average. If Thor and Cap end up being at least better than IM2, I'd say Marvel is doing a respectable job compared to studios like Fox or even Sony.

yeah, I felt that Iron Man 2 left a big impression on the public where as Iron Man 2 kinda came and went. I mean, 'How to Train your Dragon' left a better mark thus far than Iron Man 2.

Apart from Inception and Knight & Day I wont be going out of my way to see any of this summers offerings, I might check out The A Team and Predators depending one when they are released here.

Having said that I am sure there will be a couple of truly big hits out of the other stuff that I don't care about like Twilight, Toy Story 3 and a Potter movie if there is one.

2011 (Green Lantern vs Captain America vs Thor vs X-Men vs Pirates IV vs Transformers 3) and 2012 (Spider-Man vs Batman vs Avengers) are loaded with big hitters, so the best is yet to come.

Big hitters money-wise I am sure, but that list is depressingly formulaic and one track.

This really is a lackluster year. At the moment, there are only four movies I plan to see in theaters.

The Last Airbender
Inception
Let Me In
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I

Four movies spanning seven months That's pretty damn depressing. What makes it worse is that the movies I've seen so far in theaters have been nothing impressive.

The Crazies - mediocre.
Alice in Wonderland - mediocre.
Clash of the Titans - horrible.
Nightmare on Elm Street - horrible.
Iron Man 2 - mediocre.

I think maybe trailers are being underestimated. I know The Last Airbender , Despicable Me , Get Him to the Greek , A-Team , Inception, Karate Kid , Grown Ups , and of course Toy Story 3 will probably all be hits.

I hope toy story 3 makes millions.....It's a fitting film to end the franchise

fans at conventions always scream that its the best .

should i list all movies that fans praised at the conventions and then bashed after it was out? :awesome:

p.s.: i expect a fantastic 9/10 movie from Nolan.

Pixar's track record is nearly flawless though.

Inception is definitely only big with Nolan fanboys. I bet 90% of the audience thinks it's something like the Matrix.
yup,or they will see it as a Matrix rip-off and not bother with it..
For me at least there hasn't been alot of movies I had to go see at the theatres and the ones I did have sucked.
There are movies coming out that I want to see:
Predators
Last Airbender
Twilight:eclipse
Inception
Salt
Expendables
Resident Evil:Afterlife
Jackass 3d
Saw VII 3d
Faster
Red Dawn
Bruce Lee?

By all means these aren't must see movies, but they peak my simplistic interests :)

Yeah, I have heard from some people that Inception was cool "when it was called The Matrix."

Im excited for Get Him to the Greek and Splice this week
