One thing I always found odd was that apparently Ethan Hawke was offered the role of Batman before Kilmer. Not that I can’t see Hawke playing Batman (I think he probably could have done a good job) but he was a LOT younger at the time. We’re they considering rebooting the franchise entirely? Or was it potentially going to be a prequel?

Most likely it would have been just the same thing where it was a soft reboot like Forever was. I doubt they had any plan based on the age.

Well yeah, it's basically just a polished up version of the '89 suit tbh.

He was literally in a bat cave when his agent called him about playing Batman. So weird. He took it as a sign obviously and said yes. I just wish it was for a darker take.

I hope so, too. That film was a big part of my childhood and I think it honestly holds up for the most part.

If you want a hybrid of darker and lighter Batman - that film hits the middle ground perfectly, for me.

i was a teenager when i watched it in theaters with my brother.

i really liked the scenes where he's trying to solve the riddles with alfred - detective work!

after the movie was done - i turned to my brother and said "kilmer's batman is the closest to the comics so far."

at that point in time - he was the closest to the denny o'neil / neal adams batman.
which to me, is as definitive as you can get.

Loving the Kilmer appreciation. He was a great Batman. He was a little out of step with the tone of the movie, but I actually think that helps it keep its feet on the ground.

Kilmer's doc really hit me surrounding his Batman. Ignoring the views of the film at the time... he was a huge fan and once they suited him up, he felt sad about how limited and restricted he was. He states how deflated he was instantly, even on set. It was really heartbreaking to hear that.
