The Batman Reboot Casting Thread - Part 5

This is like looking into a time machine into the old superman casting thread seeing joe m there being pimped.

He's not going to get the role, i don't dislike him but he's not a leading man candidate despite his ripped bod.

I know his work i watch true blood (big of me to admit) even among the overal light-weight acting there he doesn't stand out among the cast.

Like I said earlier, he just hasn't had the perfect role to show everyone what he can really do. But he's clearly a good actor judging from True Blood.

Joe is the first suggestion that screams Batman to me, not Batguy. Even Bale didn't seem all that gruff and manly to me. Joe's got the perfect Batman build, height, voice, face, etc.

Zack Snyder is an excellent character director too, imo. Especially when it comes to comic book characters. I trust his judgement.

The actors on True Blood are great, imo. Problem is, the writing on TB gives them all very little work with most of the time, especially Manganiello's character. Still, while there are certain ones that bug me (Stephen Moyer being the big one), it's overall a very talented group of actors. And to me, Joe holds his own with those folks just fine. The scene when he had to inform his ex's parents that she was dead (while simultaneously lying to their faces about how it happened) was, to me, one of the more effective emotional scenes of last season.

I think he's a fine actor, and could be a good Batman, BUT...I just agree with others here in having a hard time seeing him fit the Bruce Wayne mold. I supported him for Superman (he was never my top choice, but he was up there) because he has a very blue collar-y everyman vibe about him that works for a guy raised on a farm in Kansas. But I feel like he lacks the suave sophistication to make for a particularly convincing pampered billionaire Bruce Wayne. I'd be fine if he were cast, but I do think there are better options out there.

Since when is Zack Snyder going to have any input on the still not yet announced batman reboot?

I don't think he's even been officially signed on for MoS 2 yet?

As for Joe people seem to be way too distracted by his physique to see he is a huge long shot not a front-runner. I didn't see him for superman and i don't for batman.

I could have seen bale day 1 for batman and the same cavill and superman.

Well that's assuming I'm right in saying Goyer and Snyder will lead the DCCU and have a hand in all the films. It's something I could see happening.

I imagine if he was cast he could put another 6 months completely devoted to his physique.
Hypothetically speaking, I think the 6 months would be better spent researching and nailing the character.

This muscle stuff is all very well, but I think it is a relatively narrow section of the audience that will really fetishize it to any degree.

I'm a Joe M supporter. I liked the idea of both him and Cavill for Superman (for different reasons) and could definitely seeing him playing a very intimidating Batman. He's a fair bit bigger than Cavill (6"5 if I recall) but I'm sure that wouldn't be a major issue on screen with camera tricks, etc.

6 months of working on a physique does not mean 24hrs of weightlifting a day. At most, it will be 3-4hrs gym time per day, if even that. That leaves plenty of hours in the day for working on character development and getting in the right mindset.

I was responding to '6 months completely devoted to his physique'.

I think that goes to the fact that arguably 90% of the reason anyone even brings up Joe for these super-hero roles is only due to his physique. So that's basically what gets discussed then.

It's almost like the male equivalent of when meagan fox used to be brought up for every role just because she's hot.

Joe seems like a nice guy and i'm sure he'd be good in a super-hero role but more as a supporting player. I'd actually like to see that.

It's not just down to his build. I've seen him in a few different things and I have no doubts about his acting ability at all, flickchick85 mentioned a great example from True Blood above where the guy really impressed me with his ability to turn very emotional (and make it believable) at the flick of a switch.

Snyder himself has come out and said that it was a very close thing between Joe and Henry for the role of Superman, but ultimately Henry got it because he has this inherent touch of innocence about him which Snyder felt the character needed. I don't think that innocence would be a requirement when casting Batman, but nonetheless that said to me that Snyder and his team obviously felt Manganiello had the abilities to lead a film.

I agree that Joe, while having the potential to be Batman, I'm not that he could be Bruce Wayne. There's 3 people he has to play in that role.

I would like to see what Joe can do with some good writing behind him because as of now there just isn't enough to back his acting ability standing.

Maybe if he even got some meaty supporting roles in film even, something we can go on. He's not some young rising star he's in his mid 30's i believe i think we're at the point we need to see something aside from assumption?

Or Ted Grant. He's like the runner's up Batman.

What we got then?

Most are going off Luke Evans.
Matt Bomer could play Bruce Wayne, unsure about Batman.
Joe M. could play Batman, unsure about Bruce Wayne.
Richard Madden hasn't had his full potential explored just yet, but bears an evil resemblance to Cavill.
Armie Hammer is as dull as can be.
Jake G. is too puppy dog eyed.
Ryan Gosling doesn't have the voice.
Anson Mount is probably too old.

Everything's going good

He has a couple of films coming out soon, inc one with Arnold Schwarzenegger, so hopefully we'll see then if he has enough ability.

Well Arnold Schwarzenegger is hardly an acting giant.

Joe could be Superman in a film where Armie Hammer is Batman, or vice versa.

lol that wasn't my point at all, I'd be the first to admit Schwarzenegger can't act. I was just mentioning it as a point of reference because I have no idea what the films are called or who else is in them. All I meant was that hopefully whatever roles he has in those 2 films will let us see if he has some decent range in his acting ability or not.

I think the one with Arnie is an action/thriller type movie, and the other is a drama.

I still think Zachary Quinto could do a great job.

But they'll never hire him for Batman because he's gay.

The thing is JM has a great physique, height and grizzled look to him that would be perfect for bruce wayne and batman, that half these choices wouldn't even be nearly as apt for. (i mean i love Zach Quinto...but really?) but you really REALLY need the chops to pull it off, you are basically playing three different characters but still playing them as one character. I just haven't seen anything from JM or half these guys to suggest they'll pull it off.

Hardly anyone doubted Bale's ability to do that (and rightfully so) because by the time he was cast he was still a very respected actor who was known to have the skill and physique to pull it off.

Basically we as fanboys prefer method actors for this ****. That's the long and short of it.

It's hard to pick an eye candy only actor after Bale's Batman.

It's hard to pick anyone after Bale, along with everything he is associated with as Batman.

Haha, still, that statement doesn't mean thats the only thing he'd do for 6 months. I merely meant he would have 6 months to focus on honing his body...besides, its just outrageous to think someone can live, breath, sleep just doing bodybuilding?

He actually looks pretty similar to the Bruce Wayne of the Animated Series

Yep. I still think he'd make an awesome Bruce Wayne as well as an amazing Batman. His physique is great and all, but that's not it. Like I said earlier, I love how gruff and manly he seems compared to most of the other suggestions. I don't think him being a nice guy in reality makes a difference on how he'd play Bruce Wayne.

Anson Mount also seems really gruff and manly. He'd make a sweet older Batman.
