The Batman Spoiler Discussion Thread

Even TLH tapped into this, almost 20 years ago.
Of course. It sounds more like a combo of TLH and Black Glove to me. I mean the story in TLH was much less critical of Thomas than anything like Telltale, if anything it was more of an allusion to Bruce's no kill rule and the consequences it has for others. Sticking to his Hippocratic Oath to save a mob boss' life and therefore allow his criminal empire to continue to hurt and kill others.

I like the idea of Thomas possibly exposing himself to blackmail out of desperation and the noble goal of protecting his wife from the tabloids. I also like the idea that the Waynes are still being portrayed as good and trying to help Gotham (with the Renewal Corp), but that their deaths allowed that altruism to be corrupted by other interested parties.

Everything honestly sounds fantastic. The waynes essentially doing what they have to to survive in Gotham almost makes them just like everybody else in that city. They're not bad people, but they are capable of bad choices and sometimes having to do wrong things in order to survive, just like your average Joe that is suffering. Plus, you factor that in with all the good stuff they've done being sabatoged.

Also I LOVE the idea of Wayne tower essential being this gothic/decaying structure. Reeves seems to have balanced multiple aesthetics for what this Gotham looks and feels like.

All of this sounds great.

What is the dynamic between Bruce and Selina? Contentious, mutual respect, uneasy?

They’re not doing anything wrong it sounds like… wtf this is going to be the least controversial, most comic book accurate Batman movie yet!!!!! Wtf. Such a great change of pace after the mixed reaction to Batfleck
Yeah, everything sounds so great, that I am uncertain about the approach to Wayne Tower/the Batcave... Like if you are going to knock it out of the park and give us such a classical Batman on film, why ditch the Manor/cave? :funny:

If I had to guess, it's probably at least partially a nod to the 70's era Batman comics when Bruce and Alfred relocated to a penthouse at the heart of Gotham and built a replica Batcave underneath the establishment, while Dick went off to college.

Thematically it might also be something of a way to put Bruce more directly in the spotlight as someone born into great privilege and wealth. After all, even after he's been orphaned and subjected to a horrific trauma, Bruce is still quite literally a boy "living up among the clouds," compared to other orphans in Gotham.

Yeah, totally. It sounds to me like a blending of the 70s comics and Earth One, where Wayne Manor has an urban location rather than being on a secluded estate.

However, I must admit, I can't help but being a little bit disappointed at the moment that it sounds like we won't see Reeves' take on the classic secluded Wayne Manor and natural Batcave beneath it. He has nailed everything else!

I'm totally fine with Bruce living in Wayne Tower and operating out of an alternative urban cave, but prefer that as a secondary residence as in the Bronze Age comics and the Nolan films. Who knows, maybe the Manor exists in Reeves' world, but it just doesn't feature in this film since Bruce is so focused on being Batman and has little interest in being Bruce Wayne. Given the talk of Wayne Terminal cave being flooded at the end of the movie, I still wonder if the intention is for Bruce to move back to the Manor as a result of the story reconnecting him with that side of his life.

People are hyping this movie so much, that i don't know if it's gonna lived up to their expectations... It's already the best movie ever xD

Since this movie is a mainstream work aimed for the general audiences at large, much like the main earth in comics, in the end, I didn't really expect DC to let them go "full evil" or "full corrupt" Thomas/Martha. The main story will always remain inspirational and idealistic as this is the story of a hero, and will have this element of "pure" around it, at least in the default version.

Another angles over them will always be explored via elseworlds (like Flashpoint, for example) or niche public (like Joker or TellTale) so it's not like we won't be fed different interpretations or portrayals. We have and we will, for sure.

The situation @shauner111 described really reminded of classic Corleone stuff in Godfather. Making favors, but in turn, "enslaving" people.

Can completely see Thomas going like: "oh, god... what in the hell.... I didn't mean you to off this guy... What have you done? I just wanted you use your influence or friends to press this guy dropping this story in his job or fired at most...." and Carmine going like "I'm sorry, my friend... this is how it is... too bad you didn't really specify so things happened this way. At least this is over, right? Remember I helped when you needed and I know this secret".

@shauner111 based on everything you know about the movie so far, which villain do you think that could be the main one in the next movie?
It’s so interesting where they leave this film, but I’m trying not to be biased and think logically when it comes to the next villain.

So it’s obvious that Harvey Dent will replace Gil Colson just like Dent replaced Finch in TDK. But since they’re not rushing their character development or trying to repeat a past film’s structure, it seems like we won’t see Two-Face emerge until the third movie. I seriously doubt they do his origin off screen. Which opens the floodgates.

So you might have less screen time for Selina in the sequel. Oz replaces Carmine as kingpin. Harvey’s screen-time will probably be like Cobblepot’s in The Batman.

Rupert Thorne (chairman of the city council with a lot to say about Batman, the mayor, the flood and the future of Gotham). Thorne declaring him an outlaw is a no brainer. Rupert is also responsible for Dent’s scarring in BTAS. Main villain though?

Poison Ivy or Hugo Strange. That’s what I’m thinking. Multiple ppl who have seen the movie have said it leans on society’s biggest fear right now. I assume they mean climate change? Pamela would be perfect no? But if that seems too bombastic, Strange may work more than I thought. Edward doesn’t seem to know Batman’s identity so Hugo Strange’s obsession with figuring out who he is would be fresh.

“Batman: Prey” from 1990 with a hint of the 70’s Englehart stories that included Thorne/Strange would be a perfect combination IMO. Have the “rise of the freaks” be a thing that’s bubbling in the underworld and watch it explode in the third film. Hell, if the DCEU had no further plans with Will Smith, I’d say cast Jack Huston (who spoke with Reeves for Batman during the Affleck days) as Deadshot. Pure 70’s.

@shauner111 Bar the scene with Penguin in the trailer, are there any other major action scenes, car chases, etc. that involves the Batmobile?

Also, I know its subjective, but from what you know and have seen, do think this could be the best ‘Batman’ film so far? Even outshining the Nolan films as they are pretty much the benchmark.

Rupert Thorne (chairman of the city council with a lot to say about outlaw Batman, the mayor, the flood and the future of Gotham). A solid supporting villain that lines up to me. Batman is blamed for Colson’s death btw. So Thorne declaring him an outlaw is a no brainer. Rupert is also responsible for Dent’s scarring in BTAS. Main villain though?

I could see Joker as the villain of the sequel and then having Harvey Dent in it too to set him up as the main villain of the third film
