BvS The Batman v Superman Positivity Thread! [SPOILERS]

Not open for further replies.
Finally a thread I can stay in. I loved the hell out of Batman v Superman. Can't stop rotating it in my head.

Although I only rate this film a "ok", I will say that each of the three heroes were amazing in their roles and I'm completely ready for a full JL movie.

Loved it. Will be going back soon. Loved everything about it. I'm sure the extended cut will smooth some of the rougher transitions but I never had a problem following the story. Zack told the story from several points of view coming at it from all angles. I like that style of storytelling myself.
That post nuke Supes was right out of Miller's DKR. Great shot. Funny how the nuke affected him and Doomsday in completely opposite ways.
I only have a couple of questions I would love to ask Zack. The primary one is what prompted the Knightmare vision? Was there something on the disk he decrypted? Did the future Flash put it there? Was it like some sort of subliminal hypnotic suggestion that flashed on his monitor?
Also what triggered Lex's spaz moment at the podium?

It's funny that there's a few users that everytime i see their avatar popping up in a BvS board i know that the message is going to be negative. It doesn't matter if it is in a thread about box office, tweets, RT, reviews, OST or whatever. Every single message about every single aspect of the film is going to be negative. It's actually very very funny. You can have 50 people telling that the audience at their theater cheered, then you see that person's avatar and you know for a fact that he is going to say that nobody in his theater cheered.

The MoS finale recap from a different perspective was really good imo.

Also the opening sequence of the Wayne deaths, intercutting with Bruce running into the woods was beautifully done, especially with the music and Bruce's narration.

1.) Yes, this really took me away to a whole new place that already exists in a previous film. We got to see this side of the fight from the view of civilians. It was a fight between two gods in a ant-farm. That's what they were. And it gave me this terrifying, almost 9/11 vibe to it. I was an emotional wreck during that part. Kudos Snyder.

2.) From the very beginning and they even discussed in on Movie Talk. Do we need to tell the story of Bruce's parents being killed? NO! We all know it, it's been done. BUT I was willing to give it credit because hey Jeffery Dean Morgan as Thomas Wayne? Thank you, I'll take that. Plus, Snyder is a great visual story teller. This entire opening with the cutting into Bruce running into the woods had me in tears. It makes sense, my parents are dead what do I do? I run from it, and I keep running. Then back in the other cut I loved the Detroit look of the city and the fact the pearls were used BUT not fought over. I loved the fact the Waynes tried to fight off the mugger. Not the "sure take my wallent, just not the pearls" I felt was cowardly and stupid. You got the cash to buy more, sorry. It reminded me of the opening to Sucker Punch, where Snyder uses only visuals and music to tell a scene with no dialogue.

Favorite part was "save Martha". You could see the shame on Bruce's face when he realized he was about to take a son away from his mother. Affleck was ace there. The Flash cameo was weird in a good way, but random asf. Perry and Alfred were cool. Martha's "I figured" line was great and consistent. It reminded of "nice suit, son". She's plays off the danger with nonchalance. Superman getting that quick solar recharge was cool.

Yeah came from this just loving Ma Kent. The part of "Save Martha" took me by surprised and made me feel like an idiot. I totally forgot her name was Martha Kent, cause I always refer to her as Ma Kent or Mrs. Kent, or Superman's mom, anything EXCEPT Martha. So using that to bridge them was great. Yeas loved the solar recharge, felt they took that from DKR.

I can agree with this. It really does feel like a comic book.

It really does, which I have no problem with but I can see how others do. Cause comics can and do transition oddly, especially if you'r reading a huge series like I am with Batman Eternal atm.

I hope I change my mind on Eisenberg on my second watch tomorrow

Oh, tell me mate, what was wrong with Eisenberg? Would love to hear from you. Unless, you just want to keep it positive here which is fine.

Also what triggered Lex's spaz moment at the podium?

That was an odd but intriguing scene. From that scene alone this is what I gathered about this Luthor. One, he is incredibly smart. I see him as that one kind of villain where he is just so smart, that his head is not large enough for that brain and all of those thoughts of his. So smart that he argues with himself - "here is an idea, but no that's not logical yes but if we so and so...", he has so many thoughts going on all at once he loses track. Furthermore, why am I Lex Luthor wasting my time on this speech with these rich schmuks? They don't care, they don't have the brain power to understand any of this. Anyways, that's my 2 cents.

Yes, that sequence glued me to the screen. Brilliant move. I think this scene alone truly elevated the original fight in Man of Steel for me.

Yes, I think it was truly amazing intro. Beautifully filmed, atmospheric. But floating wasn't needed. I wish they managed somehow to link little Bruce's fall and encounter with bats to the present day and how Bruce rushes into the city instead of presenting it like a dream sequence...

It's a weird Lex for me, many brilliant scenes and yet a penty of scene chewing from Eisenberg. But I still lean towards liking him. I still want to see more of him, even though I'm not sure how are they going to restore him as a lead of Lex Corp.? Or maybe it's done and he will be doing something else in future movies?

I have seen the movie 4 times already. Each time I watch it Batman steals the show more and more for me. I love this Batman.

I gotta ask, Was Eisenberg playing Lex Luthor or his son?? I've heard yes and no, so I'm confused. I remember him saying the Lex in Lexcorp was his dad, or something around those lines.

I'm definitely going to see this at least one more time. One of my buddies who couldn't make it last night wants to see it Sunday.

Eisenberg's character's name was Lex Luthor.

Here goes. I'll start by saying it took me a while to start seeing Henry Cavill as Superman. When I was a child Batman and Superman were my movie Superheroes. Cartoons wise I was spoilt for choice with BatmanTAS, SupermanTAS, Spiderman, that excellent X-Men cartoon, Iron Man cartoon with Mandarin, Incredible Hulk (Cartoon and Bill Bixby TV Series), and a little later Justice League/Unlimited. Superman was essentially Christopher Reeve to me. Batman was Michael Keaton or Adam West via reruns. I consider myself lucky.

We saw plenty of changes in terms of actor with Batman. Bale being the absolute best until this point since Keaton. Then with the X-Men, Spiderman Trilogy and later Iron Man, it was the first real movie iterations of the characters previously confined to Saturday morning cartoons or your local comic book store/supermarket. Dean Cain and Tom Welling seemed like timely versions of the Reeve Superman character. Brandon Routh was another variation on the same interpretation.

Cavill was very different and it took me a few viewings to accept him as Superman. This movie cemeted him as Superman to me and I think alot of people and to some extent the movie have done the guy a disservice. I think if you look closely at his portrayal in BVS you can see its a tremendous performance. It's subtle but it reflects the character's status as being one of in development. I think scene after scene you can pick out real hurt from the character as he becomes more and more the object of genuine hatred. The ultimate sacrifice theme is a common one, true, but when you consider that the sacrifice Superman makes at the end of the film is based on no foreknowledge of resurrection and in the context of the rest of the story, it is stirring, it is hopeful, it is the humanity of Superman. The bitter blows the character has taken in terms of confirming both his own and Jonathan Kent's worst fears about the consequences of his existence are heartbreaking. The nuclear weapon sequence is the ultimate reveal of just how much the balance of opinion on him and his actions is weighted in favour of fear and anger. Scoot McNairy's character represents the same fear and resentment. Supes is left with a decision as to whether or not he should continue to try and protect a world that is rejecting him.

Eisenberg's Lex is another underrated performance. This is a character driven by feelings of inferiority, inadequacy and helplessness since being bashed around as a kid by Lex Snr. Superman appears to him as the ultimate confirmation of his inadequacy, feebleness and lack of worth and so he becomes a threat that must be destroyed. Nothing can be more important to this character and we see the public façade break down into real mental illness. Its not the traditional take but who else does this sound like if not Lex Luthor? He is going to be interesting to follow into Justice League, how will he factor in with Darkseid? The end of the movie hints strongly that he will somehow at least.

Battfleck nailed it. essentially. Definitive Batman on screen. He really was Bruce Wayne and Batman but an extremely hopeless one. Most amazing live action Batman in terms of action sequences we have ever had. This Batman has really been through the ringer. Lost all hope. Is very very bitter even towards his parents for being murdered. This character hauls around a lot of family related guilt. Its the major theme, fear that he has not done enough to protect those he cares about. Such a good place to develop the Batman character from as we can see him move back with the help of the rest of the league towards a more optimistic and hopeful version of himself. More like the Justice League series. Not only would this be a unique take on the character but it would nicely mirror some central themes in the character's comic history. I like the idea, if indeed that is it. The interplay between Affleck and Irons was wonderful to watch. They have a great chemistry and as Batman moves away from the pitch black version he is here, there should be some great moments in that dynamic alone to be excited for the batman solo, Justice League and beyond. They really nailed his motivations for fearing superman and they arent simply as superficial as his power level and potential threat. Batman knows he has failed Superman in the end by letting his bitterness blind him to everything. I enjoy this kind of character development very much. In fact I am really looking forward to how this Batman interacts with Suicide Squad in a few months. This going to be amazing to see another great director's take on Affleck's Batman and of course we get to see and learn a bit more of Batman's world, most obviously his dynamic with Joker will surely be addressed.

Really didn't get to see enough of Gal to form a really solid opinion of her but she was good. Wonder Woman was great though action sequences and interactions with Affleck. Be interesting to see more of her interacting with the other Justice Leaguers too. It will be fun to see the character arc develop as its being done in reverse order and also seeing what role she will play going forward in the bigger plot. By the end of Batman V Superman she is sort of playing Merlin in King Batman Arthur's search for the Knights of the round table.

The Flash cameo has me excited about the storyline possibilities ahead. Cyborg one was also interesting in terms of... Hey...wait.. is that a Boom Tube Silas has? And why is Aquaman poking people with his Trident? Amy Adams was good again as Lois Lane and would like to have seen more Lois and Clark stuff. Fishbourne was really very sardonic and funny as Perry. Great to have an actor of that calibre around.

I could go on for hours, especially on the world weariness of Batman and how they lead him to do some very dark and brutal things. There is lots of great to take from this movie. A lot to be hopeful for. Right now there is nothing else to do but look at the positives. The film did have it's negatives, no need for me to go into them here. If you have read reviews and seen the movie its easy to see which ones are accurate and differentiate these from the ones that you don't think are.

Lastly, I have to say a downer vibe has affected my enjoyment of the movie from reading these threads since the reviews started rolling in. I am happy this particular thread exists, but then again I wish it wasn't necessary. There is a lot of negativity in every walk of life. Some people feed off it, it helps them makes sense of the world to have something to hate. Something to define themselves against. I'm optimistic because I saw enough quality and potential in this movie for some very interesting storytelling going forward. Good times ahead people... wait and see

Batman was indeed amazing. Bravo to Zack. We need more of Batfleck. And we will get a bit of that in Suicide Squad!!!

Batman's scene at the end where he's saving Clark's mom was brilliant.

I haven't really talked much about Batman, I loved Ben's take. I really didn't give a **** about his disregard with basically killing criminals. I felt like this was a Batman at war and he was killing enemy soldiers. He was downright scary at times, the first time we seem him was like something from a horror movie.

I wonder if something was cut, there was the scene of him looking at newspaper clippings.

Well, um, Clark's supposed to actually travel to Gotham, and go to the GCPD. Did that happen in the film?

just got back from seeing it. totally undeserved of the RT score.

both the few good and tons of bad reviews had me think that BvS is Ang Hulk in a grand scale, but it's not. the story is simple enough and overall quite enjoyable.

it's not the deep, philosophical masterpiece some claim to be, but it's not the disjointed, convoluted mess many accuse of it.

the editing issue, if it is a problem, it's not just the first 2/3 of the film, it's throughout the whole thing, and we've seen that in TDKR already.

the only issue for me personally is that the last battle is too short, and I don't get to see the details of the fighting.

Lex's arc definitely will be completed in JL; he knows knightmare future in some way, and we'll understand his motives in JL.

the best part of the movie is of course Wonder Woman, especially chopping off Doomsday's hand...just sick.

it's a shame that bad critical receptions will prevent many people from seeing it, and its boxoffice performance is going to be hurt by that. Social media, even more so than traditional ones, thrive on spreading negativity.

will be seeing again tomorrow.

Glad you liked it, teardrop. I also liked how she held DD on her lasso - just wow. Batman shot Doomsday with a kryptonite grenade and Superman delivers the final blow. Team work! Felt incredible powerful and dramatic.

And the last battle was short? Didn't feel like that to me. It was pretty lengthy and beyond epic.

Going to watch it again soon with large company in IMAX. I want to see the final battle again... Holy damn. What an action and drama piece. My heart was beating hard during it. :hmr:

I don't think it did, but I did pee a few times. I wonder if that will be in the Ultimate Cut.

Does anyone remember if the 20 years in Gotham line from Bruce was in the film? Because I can't remember

yeah, I really wish they shoot the final battle in IMAX! those IMAX footage are phenomenal!

I watched it in IMAX 2D; the theater I go to is the only one in Taiwan has it. just amazing experience.

I think it's there, but a bit different. how many stay that way...he's going to be the Hunter Wayne part it seems.

How is the audience response over there? (Both in PRC and ROC?)

well, DC fans (except for few pure blood Nolanites), mostly love the films in PROC. the GA gives both negative and positive reactions and Wonder Woman is the only thing everyone agrees on...pretty and badass.

there's funny comment: "gay men may turn straight and hetero girls may turn lesbians because of her" :woot:

in ROC...well, Marvel fan base is strong, quite a few "you cannot trust WB to make superhero movies" comments. the overall reaction is ok, not great:csad:
