The BIG TIME Bought/Thought Thread for Nov. 10 - SPOILERS!

Finally saw Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

It was a really cute movie; but, I have to say that I hated Michael Cera in this movie. It was almost to the point of being completely distracting, especially since he's playing the same character we've seen numerous times. The beauty of this film is in what the director accomplished...but, I have to say some of the cast choices had me scratching my head.

Have you read the comics? The casting for everyone was basically spot on really. Cera was the only one off, but even he was pretty good I thought, but I never had this hate a lot of people seem to have for him.

And I disagree he just played the same character again. I don't remember his Scott being all that much like other roles I've seen him in.

Hey, Dread, for what it's worth, as a vocal detractor of the whole OMD/BND/OMIT thing (and we share the same passion for the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon), I enjoyed this first issue of Big Time. Yes, you have to get past the whole "wedding never happened" thing (which I'm NOT happy about), but it looks like Dan is picking up quite a few interesting plot threads. And Spidey in the Avengers in this issue works a lot better than the "comic relief" he's relegated to in the Avengers comics.

I 2nd that for the most part. I was hoping Dread was going to pick it up and share his thoughts on it.

To be honest, "BIG TIME" is probably the most tempted I've been to hop onto ASM, even more so than when BND began and Slott's initial run officially debuted. That said, the economics of it would mean that is another $4 ongoing title. These days, the $4 ongoing titles I buy are CAPTAIN AMERICA, SECRET AVENGERS and THOR; the rest are mini's (or $3 ongoing titles like AVENGERS ACADEMY or THUNDERBOLTS). That means either I dig deep for the extra $4 every two weeks or, ideally, I drop one of the three. And to be honest, I've been partisan about SECRET AVENGERS and THOR for a few months now; I'm more liable to drop THOR, since Fraction's always been THIS CLOSE to losing me on INVINCIBLE IRON MAN for ages now (and that's a $3 book), so I know if he doesn't start out awesome, he rarely improves.

And CASANOVA is one of a hundred things I need to catch up on in collections.

You also have to take into account that ASM is twice a month. But if you drop both Fraction books you can swing it.

It was definitely unusual. I know Blake is meant to boost Thor's relatability, but this whole amnesia trip is not doing it for me. You want to see a great angsty study of what Thor and Blake mean to each other, check out Jim Owsley's (a.k.a Christopher Priest's) OGN Thor: I, Whom the Gods Would Destroy.

It wasn't unusual. It was poor. It was like something I'd see done in a college creative writing class by some dip thinking he/she is being clever and doing something "new" and "enlightening" and "inventive." Instead, it's none of those things, and simply a piece of poor writing.

I'm speaking strictly of writing quality. The art was pretty and the panelwork was solid. But the past-tense narration from the part of the mortal character destroys any suspense and calls into necessity a nigh-unexplainable reason she knows of the battle between Thor and Glory - not to mention the how of naming and describing a creature that apparently defies classification and whatever other trite mentionings there were - when the comic could have been told and written in a much better way.

It sucked. Thor as an amnesiac quasi-mortal doesn't even enter much into the equation, though it certainly doesn't make the comic any better.

I just realized I forgot to do bought thoughts this week. Well I don't have time for it now but I will say that I was pleasantly surprised with the Ant Man and Wasp comics. Not only was it good but it referenced Charnel!!! For those not in the know, Charnel was the big bad for Deaths Head II.

I love Death's Head II and would love to see him back but they just kinda go all around him. Evalyne Necker, his creater, was a major character in Nova. The original Death's Head was in Sword. Charnel is mentioned here. And the closest we got was when Death's Head II got a minor cameo in the last issue of MI: 13.

I loved all of the above but I'm ready for more Death's Head II!!

True, that was an awkward way of narrating the issue. I had a problem with all the "telling" rather than showing, too. Like the scenes where Thor is fighting Glory and he's supposedly overcoming things that would make lesser gods die on the spot, or the part where his mind is supposedly falling apart under Glory's onslaught. I have no indication of that in the pages. And then the part where he just suddenly gets a surge of extra power that fixes him right up and allows him to own Glory--that was weird and totally unexplained. It's probably something like Thor's humanity being the X-factor that separates him from other gods, but that too is kind of a trite message with Thor at this point.

But I still didn't hate it as much as you. I'll be picking up the second issue, anyway.

So I finally read Thor today. I'm liking this Bat-Thor and Robin/Loki thing they're trying to pull off. Fraction's Thor is one heck of a departure from everything Gillen's done that's for sure. Balder is clearly unfit to be King right now and has given up hope and Thor's chasing Loki around Paris. I'm interested to see where this heads but with Fraction by November 2011 I'll still be waiting.

And just to get things back on a non-Kenny Rogers track:

Almost everything Thor that I bought this week was average at best, and that was for Ultimate Thor. The main title is a confusing jumble of what the?, and I really don't like Bianchi. Which is a real disappointment, because I always liked those Thor one-shots and minis.

Where it heads? Odin's coming back. We all know where it heads. Odin will be on the throne, Loki will be his proper age, and Balder will be a footnote, all in time for the movie.

True. I guess it would be more similar to the movie that way, since I've heard the movie's Loki is a bit more ambivalent, like he's just starting down his path to hating Odin and Thor more than all the candy corn in the world.
