Ok,this is one of those films that you either really love or really hate. There's no in between.
I am one of those people who absolutley LOVED this movie. For me,this ranks as one of the best all time horror films. I can honestly say that I'm a sick, demented person and I love horror. I've seen alot of messed up stuff(both in movies and in real life),but no movie has ever creeped me out as much as Blair Witch did. I remember after seeing this movie I couldn't sleep for a week or so. In an age where horror movies have bad acting, terrible dialogue and crappy CGI scares,Blair Witch stands as a new and refreshing way of making films. Many people have complaints about the movie not showing anything,or the moving camera or whatever. The fact that you never see anything is what makes this film work. Nothing is more terrifying than your own imagination, and this film knows that. Even after all these years I still ask myself these questions.... "What happened to these students?"..."Did they die,and if so,how horribly?"..."If it was the witch, then what does she/it look like?"..."What happened to their remains?"
Plus, since the movie was mainly improvised by the actors, all of their reactions are real and more believeable.Heather,Josh and Mike really were scared, tired and hungry. It was very easy for people sitting in their movies seats to question why Heather did this,or why Josh acted this way,but if you were in their situation, you would've lost it as well. I've lived around the woods most of my life and believe me,it's a creepy place, especially at night.Probably the one scene that freaks me out still to this day is when Heather and Mike come out of their tent late at night to hear Josh screaming for help. His toungue and a few teeth have been removed so it's hard to understand him,but his screaming echos throughout the forrest. Mike is yelling for Josh, while Heather begins to cry and she says,"Oh My God!" Just imagine being in that position. Jeez, that moment still gives me goosebumps.
This is intelligent horror. You have to have an imagination to appreciate and understand it. I think many people dislike it because they fell for the "hoax" that this was a real movie. Well, don't blame that on the film itself. Hell,I knew it was just a movie long before it came out. How come nobody else figured that out?
