The thing is, Jackson is making The Hobbit more like LOTR. Which, by the way, not a fan of at all. The Hobbit is so special, why play with it?
Tolkien wanted to rewrite The Hobbit after LotR turned out as it did (it was supposed to be a similar tale but, as he famously said, it grew in the telling). He didn't completely rewrite all of it to fit the LotR style but he did rewrite the chapter Riddles in the Dark.

So Jackson making The Hobbit like his LotR trilogy is a very Tolkienesque idea. Especially since he'll include the important events that are happening off page.

As for the 48 fps thing I have yet to see how it looks but I can't imagine I'll prefer 24 fps. When it comes to video nothing looks more unnatural, compared to our eyesight, than jerky motion. I don't care that it's cinematic for some because 24 fps is pretty much just a byproduct of trying to save money.

There is no superhero fatigue. Only fatigue of bad superhero movies. Like Green Lantern and Wolverine and their ilk.
Fatigue of bad superhero films is exactly what I want. They bring down the reputation of the whole genre. I hope all the bad films lose loads of money and the good film are richly rewarded.

I'm sorry, I must have misread... did someone say Avatar was a so-so film?

And as for Marvel holding the opening weekend record... if TDKR doesn't do it this summer... something will be the new record holder within the next 12-15 months. I said this before... it is really meaningless now.

I've seen more hate than love for Avatar. I thought it was great.

Outside of its technical achievements, I didn't care for Avatar.

Hmm, i thought it was Good...not great...but certainly not so so. Boom, i expect better of you.

Sorry, man. I just didn't care for it. It's not a bad movie, mind you. I just didn't see what all the fuss was about, and it's not a movie I'd go out of my way to watch again.

Moon > Avatar.

Yep, Avatar's story was derived of plots from Ferngully, Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas. It wasn't even a well-written story at the end of the day.

Avatar's visuals/SFX were awe-spiring but that wasn't enough for me.

Now, The Avengers' story might have been simplistic but it was executed far better than Avatar's.

the 'fuss' for me was the 3d...saw it in IMAX 3d...it was visually stunning. WB is going to get a hefty bit of money from me because I highly doubt I will see TDKR in any way except IMAX...multiple times... TDK's IMAX scenes on my blu-ray are fantastic too

I love James Cameron even though he seems to be a jerk and a tyrant. I'm also stanning hard for Sigourney Weaver, but yeah, outside of its technical achievements Avatar is not a good film.

The CGI was phenomenal, and the movie was the best 3D experience I've ever had. But outside of those two things, what does Avatar offer? A derivative story with so-so dialogue and cliche characters.

big breasted blue aliens.

I enjoyed Avatar despite the derivative story. To be fair, pretty much everything released today is derivative of stuff from the past. Hollywood is out of good storytelling ideas for the most part. Setting the story aside though, the action sequences were great. Cameron is the best action director on the planet.

Moon > Avatar.

Moon, Sunshine, District 9 and Prometheus (likely) all crush Avatar in the Sci-Fi genre. There's no doubt.

It still infuriates me that Moon wasn't nominated for Best Picture. It's hands-down one of the best sci-fi films of the 2000's (alongside Children of Men), and I'd go so far as to say it's one of the best of all time.

Just one in a very long list over the years. Wrestler, Zodiac, and Prestige are some other recent ones that I wish received more recognition at the time.

Ive never seen Sunshine...or Moon....

You should get on that. Although like many the 3rd act of Sunshine always conflicts me.

A lot of sci-fi films to look forward to:

Prometheus
Looper
Gravity
Elysium
Pacific Rim
Cloud Atlas
