The Dark Knight Rises The Box Office Thread

Avengers might have 3D on its side, but TDKR will be a monster on the IMAX. Especially with over 60 minutes worth of footage. Friends will tell friends.

EDIT: Though I did hear from a friend who works at a theater that they gave out 3 2d and 3 3d versions of the film but are trading in next week for just 6 3d versions. Which means there won't be any choice for 2d versions. All a planned money making scheme, those Hollywood execs.

I think The Avenger's record-breaking numbers is a good sign for Rises. Even when you account for the 3D inflation, it still shows that people are showing up in high numbers for these movies.

Topping that opening weekend is a tall order, but we'll see. I'm curious to see if Avengers will cross $1 billion when it's all said and done.

The way it's gove overseas, it can't miss a billion by now.

It's a new Peter Jackson LOTR film. It'll be huge.

I love The Hobbit, I even like it better than LOTR, but I don't think it can beat TA.
LOTR really had everything, not only the battles and the fantasy but also the hot guys and the love story. The Hobbit is more like a fairy-tale to me. Maybe Part 2 if the first one is a big success.

I don't think a non 3D film can beat TA's openning which makes me sad because knowing those greedy b*****ds, I feel like it's the end of 2D and I freaking hate 3D :cmad:

I'm hoping that after this summer, people stop talking about "super hero fatigue."

That will probably increase, as I wonder if it will get any better than this. It's natural that people eventually get tired of a genre.

To be fair, we're currently right in the peak of "Avengers hype". TDKR hype for the masses hasn't really kicked into full gear yet (TV spots etc). We don't know exactly what that will be like. It could very well be a beast of its own. Even with Heath's death being a factor, NOBODY predicted TDK would be as huge as it was.

There is no superhero fatigue. Only fatigue of bad superhero movies. Like Green Lantern and Wolverine and their ilk.

The thing is, Jackson is making The Hobbit more like LOTR. Which, by the way, not a fan of at all. The Hobbit is so special, why play with it?

it is going to make its money, there comes a point when enough movie is enough money. Unless you are James Cameron and you can't managed your shoot so you end up literally needing the movie to be the biggest film of all time just to make a profit.

Alot of people are doubting The Hobbit after the 48 fps fiasco but I certainly believe The Hobbit will be a monster of it's own.

I think that is more of an internet thing, most people probably don't even know what the heck fps is.

They will when they see it.

which is after they have already payed for it. All I'm saying is nothing on the internet is ever as widespread in the general public as people seem to want to think.

Unless they are going to do an up charge, which would be really stupid and an even harder sell than 3D...at least most people understand that concept.

Apparently 24 fps will be available. That will be the option most theaters will take imo.
24fps without 3D is how I’ll watch it. Cinematography in the trailer looked wonderful IMO. No need to spoil that with distracting gimmicks, even if they've put a lot of money into it.

How is it WB's fault that Avengers did ridculous numbers ? Lets give credit Marvel packaged a so so film film and made it into a huge spectacle .

If the rumours are true about what happens in the epic finale, this will almost certainly make more than TDK. It's gonna act like Joker did in 2008 - get everyone to feel they need to see it + inflation = $600m.

Because they forgot to manipulate the RT reviews to have the Avengers be at 90% instead of 94%.

Rises isn't doing 200 million in a weekend just for the simple fact it's not in 3D.

In the long game, it might do more than Avengers because it's in the middle of the summer and kids are out compared to now but opening weekend will stay in Marvel's hands for a while.

True but it will have to do more than 500 million and even that may not do it. Even with a crap multiplier Avengers is a lock for 425-450 M.

I think that TDKR will sell just as many tickets on opening weekend, but because of the lack of 3D the numerical value won't be as large. No biggie, TA is a great popcorn flick that deserves its success. But for me it's still just the appetizer to the main course. If the main course is delicious, I'm not going to care how much(or little) money it ends up making.

Yep. Enjoy it while it lasts, because I believe that this summer is the peak of the superhero craze. Nothing will top TA or TDKR for a long time.

Should be a lock for $475m I think. I think someone on the BoxOffice.com forums said it would make $488m with IM2's multiplier. IM2's word of mouth was garbage compared to this one, which is off the charts from what I saw at the theater Friday night. I almost feel it's a lock for $500m. It also has a legit shot at $600m if the WOM keeps going the way it is.

Finally saw Avengers last night, on IMAX and in 3D.

Now, this is coming from someone who hates 3D, with a dark ferocity...

The screen is so big, the 3D didn't even bother me - it's honestly not an issue for me if it's on IMAX. I was really surprised.

For me, 3D always makes the picture darker, and the screen size much smaller. On IMAX, I didn't have either problem.
