The Dark Knight Rises The Box Office Thread

Well then clearly people haven't been paying much attention. This isn't the thread to discuss it, but Joker had plenty of motivation and clear goals to achieve throughout that story. Not even in subtext (though there were a few instances), but right in the dialog. It's hard to miss.

i know it is. but it may not have translated well... kinda like to old japanese games (all your bases are belong to us)

I think this has a realistic shot at taking out Titanic. Will it happen? I don't know. But it has the most realistic shot out of all the upcoming movies (aside from Avatar sequels).

nope. not happening....

With the same drops as The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises would need to make 178.2m opening weekend to get to 600m. Seems plausible.

I think it will make a little less than the dark knight, simply because the joker isn't in it.

Yeah, pretty much. Though everyone of the GA pretty much loved TDK, I think regardless of the Joker being in it or not, people will want to see how it ends. Who knows? But if it makes less, it will be because of no Joker.

I just hope it crushes every Twilight related box office record (opening day gross i think?). An old girlfriend convinced me to sit through the first one with her. Needless to say, we are no longer together.

Its sad how movies that bad can be a box office record holder

It's gonna make more money up front and overall - why?

1) The hype from TDK.
2) The hype from Nolan / Inception.
3) They waited long enough to build back up a demand.
4) More people checked out Begins after TDK and are Batman fans.
5) It's "cool" to be a Bat-fan now.
6) People wanna see Hathaway in skintight catsuit. Regardless if she's been nude in films before.
7) People want to see if Hathaway / Hardy will top Ledger.
8) It's Batman.
9) IMAX tickets - not only is more of the film being shot in IMAX, but there are now more IMAX theaters available to the public and they cost more.
10) After TDK's success - TDKR will be playing in more rooms in theaters - upping the amount of tickets that CAN be sold.
11) Nolan's secrative habits creates a bigger mystique and interest in fanboys and general public.
12) People that waited for the TDK hype to die down before they saw the movie will be more excited to see it when it comes out this time.
13) More people coming around to the repeat-ticket-sales mentality now that they see more and more people doing it.
14) Viral marketing will be more noticeable and people outside of fans will care this time.
15) More publication by more media outlets and they make a big deal out of a title, or a release date or casting and people are more likely to see it.

should I keep going? lol

If this is released in China then it will give the additional international boost that it needs.

'Inception' was huge there (I think it even holds the record for the biggest US release) and Bale is starring in arguably the biggest Chinese movie ever (I think the movie he's doing is the biggest budgeted movie they ever had). He is not that well known there yet but his film opens late this year (Dec 2011) so he'll be fresh on their minds. Apparently, the promotions for his movie has already started and he's only been filming for 2 weeks.

All they need is to say is "from the director of 'Inception' and starring Christian Bale of "13 Flowers of Nanjing"" in addition to the usual Batman marketing and they're set.

Not for nothing - but do a little history kids.

Brits and Chinese don't all really enjoy each other. In fact they're kind of racist towards each other.

It doesn't help that every eastern character in a Nolan movie turns out to be a bad guy - sans the old Chinese guy in Prestige.

Since when?

Brits aren't 'racist' against Chinese.

We hate all other nationalities equally.

The Dark Knight Rises and the Star Trek sequel will be the juggernauts next summer.

... you left out The Avengers. I suppose it's a wild card until after Thor and Captain America come out.

If those two films do well, I'm pretty sure Avengers will give both ST2 and TDKR a run for their money.

Im sorry but if you dont think TDK was helped by Heathes death then your crazy. Sure being a great movie is what gave it awesome long term sales. But generating origional buzz was helped by his death.

I disagree. Before TDK came out, I heard nothing but great reviews about Heath's performance and that it was oscar worthy not to mention the movie as a whole received positive feedback. There was already hype for the movie before Heath's passing.

Regarding his performance and the positive word of mouth on the film, this is what drove me to see the film even though I was hyped up to begin with. After Memento, Prestige, TDK, Inception, I wouldn't be surprised to see TDKR pull in big bucks and surpass it's predecessor.

Whatever happened to the guy that said TDK's opening would be less than 50 million? He made these box office threads fun.

well obviously, Batman is gonna do better than Spider-Man. wanna know why?

Spider-Man sold his soul to the devil
Batman can beat the s**t out of a devil

Batman can beat the s**t out of a devil

Batman to Peter Parker: You're not the devil, you're practise...

Does it really matter if this film beats TDK's record or not?

The film will be a box-office success. I think that's pretty much guaranteed.

"We have a winner."

Was that AdvancedDark? I remember that guy.

Then again, I remember other posters saying things like 'TDK will be lucky to make a million more than BB.' Pretty hilarious in retrospect.

Yep. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say.

I guess I've just never understood why people care so much about their films breaking records and being the highest grossing film of the summer/year. So long as the film makes enough to greenlight sequels, who cares how much it actually makes?

It's the last film of the trilogy. I'm more concerned with it ending the franchise on a high note story-wise and quality-wise, rather than think about how much money it's going to make in its opening weekend.

And regardless of whether or not TDKR tops The Avengers next year, no doubt RDJ will say something to piss people off - even though it'll once again be a joke.

TDKR definitely has a chance at surpassing TDK. It's got Catwoman for one thing. Word will also get around that this is the last of a trilogy. People, for the most part, were also pleased with both BB and TDK, so expectations are high right now.

The Spiderman franchise is a good example. Most people were pleased with the first 2 movies. Spiderman 3 made more world-wide than Spiderman 2, but 37 million less domestically. I'm sure if Spiderman 3 had been better than Spiderman 2 (or just as good) it would have surpassed it domestically.

Word of mouth and quality will probably be the two big factors. As long as both are good TDKR could break TDK's record.

It's fanboyism, plain and simple. That being said, I was glad TDK had the success it had because it was such a great film. Too often we see movies make money that aren't very good, and it can get frustrating.
