The Dark Knight The Christian Bale/Bruce Wayne thread

I don't know, I just think people look for reasons to criticise actors.
It's like they have a series of read-made insults prepared for when they suffer a slight, very slight nervous breakdown.
This isn't Mariah Carrey screaming to "TAKE ME TO THE RAINBOWS!"
It's just a guy who loves his craft and is a little over-excited because someone killed his buzz.
It's understandable that Bale would go a little postal.

I don't think there's any coincidence behind the fact that this incident happened 7 months ago but the clip gets "leaked" just a couple months before Terminator comes out. WB leaked it on purpose to create hype. But you are right, the remix might help create even more hype. Even as much as people may be disgusted by his comments, the remix is completely hilarious.

I don't think marketing a film by showing Bale being a *****ebag is the right touch. I think it's more bad publicity, like when MI-3 got bad publicity because people were turned off by Cruise's increasingly crazy acts in the media. It's not good to have the main character be played by someone a lot of people can't stand anymore.

Not that I think Bale is a *****ebag mind you. I personally don't care either way, since Bale is a serious actor and when someone is serious with their work they tend to get angry when something goes wrong. Even if he is a *****ebag for ranting at the guy for as long as he did or how he did, a lot of good actors tend to be hard to work with or rude in real life. I still watch their films and love their work. Sometimes a painting is better then the painter, and even if Bale is the scum of the earth he still does good acting. Regardless, this tirade really split the fanbase and I knew it was going to happen as soon as I heard the clip. I knew before I even checked the forums half the fans were going to vehemently defend Bale and the other half would condemn him. Either way, that's not very good hype.

Because it made me laugh:

I personally have about five pics of Bale flicking off the camera (3 of which are professionally shot pics from photoshoots) and one is from a movie. (And quite frankly, I'm sure I have many more photos of myself flicking off cameras--not to mention COUNTLESS pics of other movie stars, sports stars and musicians giving the bird). It's a gesture a lot of people give, and you are deluding yourself if you think pics are shot of people doing that which are not meant in jest. (Do you honestly know the context of this picture is fact? Are you sure it wasn't flicked at a paparazzi? Because honestly I could post one of my Bale bird pics and create a story that he shot it at me, and would you be any wiser?)

I wouldn't always believe the fan stories you hear on the internet. Whenever news hits on *ANY* celebrity, people tend to come out of the woodwork with all of these tales (usually a friend's of a friend's) about how so and so celebrity was a jerk when they tried to get an autograph or how they heard they are a jerk on set, blah blah blah.

But, just for the sake of argument, let's say your friend's story is legit. Put yourself in celebrities' shoes. How would you feel if people came up and snapped cameras in your face all of the time? Please spare me the line that he is 'required' to endure it and is paid enough, etc, because what he is actually paid for is to act. To make movies, not give up 100% of his privacy for anyone he might meet on the street who wants to flash a camera in his face. He signs for fans all of the time (do a quick youtube check of Christian on the set of Public Enemies, for example.) The man has been in movies for 20 years. I can assure you he knows how to treat his fans, and fully appreciates them. But again, before you start berating someone on their behavior and judging them, maybe you should stop and ask yourself if you are sunny and happy *every second* you are on your job (you know, since that is what this is to him--WORK) and then ask yourself how you might feel if you are on your down time away from work and some client pops up and wants you to drop everything you are personally doing and start paying attention to them.

And lastly, who cares if he is a Saint or the biggest jerk on the Earth? You don't work with him. You will probably never meet him. If you like his movies, go to them. Buy them. If you hate him, move on and never give him another thought or cent. A lot of people have attitudes and bad days and tempers and egos. They aren't exclusive to Hollywood, I assure you. It's just that their mistakes get aired allover the net and the rest of us can hide our stuff behind our computer screens. But at the end of the day, we're all flawed humans, even *GASP* Christian Bale.

Yea flipping the bird isn't always meant in a derogatory way. Some times it's just people pissing about. Like when I talk to my friends sometimes I'm like "Alright you ****!" They know I don't mean anything by it, it's just me having a laugh and winding them up. I'm sure a lot of celebrities flip the bird or whatever with the sole purpose to wind the media up and to just sit back and laugh at their pathetic reaction.

People seem to have conveniently forgotten about that picture of Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams flipping off photographers (and Heath holding up the little sign that emphasized the gesture). But I doubt you'll be hearing all these same people talk about how horrible Heath was, and how horrible Michelle is because of that picture.

Oh, and great post, Ferd.

As far as I thought, every important Hollywood star (and/or directors/producers) are like this. They get pissed off easily and can afford the luxury of tell people off as much as they want. I mean, what are you going to do against them?

I think a new remix could come out every day for like a month and I'd probably laugh at all of them.

And as others have pointed out, this stuff isn't anything new. Bill Murray has a history of messing with people on set just to see if he can get everyone pissed off at him

Whoopi Goldberg defends Christian Bale
‘I too have gone off on people,’ says ‘The View’ host

Access Hollywood
updated 5:29 p.m. ET, Tues., Feb. 3, 2009

Several celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg, have leapt to the defense of Christian Bale after a recording of the actor lashing out and swearing at “Terminator Salvation” director of photography, Shane Hurlbut, surfaced on the internet on Monday.

During the Hot Topics debate on Tuesday’s “The View,” Goldberg, who has starred in a host of big screen movies including “Ghost” and “Sister Act,” said interruptions on set, like the one Bale accused Hurlbut of in the recording, are difficult for an actor.

“We don’t know if this (incident happened) at the end of the day, we don’t know how many hours (he had) been working,” “The View” moderator said. “It’s tough. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I too have gone off on people, because if you’re a professional, you know what you’re not supposed to do.”

It appears from listening to the audiotape, first posted on TMZ on Monday, Bale grew angry after Hurlbut walked within his frame of view during filming for a second time.

During the exchange, which reportedly was recorded in July 2008, days before Bale began promoting “The Dark Knight” in London (where he was arrested on allegation of assault), the actor is heard reacting angrily toward the DP.

“I’m gonna f---ing kick your f---ing ass,” Bale says, as a commotion starts up and a host of unknown parties sound as if they are attempting to calm the actor down by calling him by his first name.

“I’m gonna, do you want me to go and trash your lights?” Bale continues with a raised voice. “Do you want me to go and trash them? Then why are you trashing my scene?”

After hearing the tape, “The View” co-panelist Joy Behar suggested that Bale’s rant was out of order.

“This is not, no one is on an operating table getting brain surgery,” she said. “This is show business.”

But Goldberg said that actors are often intense on set because they are practicing their craft.

“But it’s your art. It’s your art form,” she replied.

“If I have to jump out of character to tell you something you should know?” Goldberg later continued. “You’re in a zone and it’s crazy.”

Also supporting Bale was actor Terry Crews, who starred alongside the star in 2005’s “Harsh Times.”

“I’d get mad too if I was the number one star in the world and people started to mess with me,” Crews told Hollyscoop. “He is a class act. He is one of the greatest actors ever. You can catch anyone on a bad day.”

Crews also suggested that the incident may have happened because Bale is such a devoted actor on set.

“I’m vouching for him,” Crews added. “I know he’s a nice guy. I know he’s all about his work. He’s one of the greatest actors out there.”

According to a source close to the film who spoke to Access Hollywood, despite the incident, “Terminator Salvation” wrapped up and no one was fired. The actor and Hurlbut have also made up and all is well with them, the source added.

I've freaked out on people worse than that over less...it just happens sometimes

Thank you to Whoopi for responding to Joy's very stupid (in my mind of course) comment about it not being brain surgery, it's show business. Well excuse me idiot, but some actors actually do it for the art instead of the buck. Anything can be an art form, even if it's not important to you.

Ooops, I'm the one whose post got deleted by C. Lee. I just want to share this... this also made me laugh:

Alfred: A long time ago, I was in Burma, my friends and I were working for a movie studio. They were trying to buy the loyalty of actors by bribing them with precious lights. But their lights were being *effed* with in a forest north of Rangoon by a cinematographer. So we went looking for the lights. But in six months, we never found anyone who traded with him. One day I saw a child playing with a light the size of a tangerine. The bandit had been throwing them away.
Bruce: Then why *eff* with them?
Alfred: Because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to *eff* with people's lights.

Now, let me get this straight. You think your actor, one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the world, is secretly a leader of the human resistance who opposses intelligent machines and spends his nights chainsawing hookers to a bloody pulp with his Gun Kata... and your plan is to *eff* with this person's lights? Good luck.

I'd love for someone to ask Wally Pfister about this incident.

WALLY: "I'd never **** with Christian's lights."

He does it for the art? Not the buck? Then why the hell is he in a Terminator movie with McG?

You apologists are like Mafia wives.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

Chris Nolan: CHRISTIAN!!! HOW DARE YOU? I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE!

Bale: No! Baby come back! I can change!

Jokes at the expense of the one of the greatest actors

I'm not apologizing for anything. He was in wrong. All three of them were, but don't forget that Terminator 1 and 2 are well loved, don't forget that Paul Haggis, Shawn Ryan, and Jonathan Nolan have all been apart of the writing process. Don't use terminator movie as an excuse for him to not take his craft seriously. Give me a break with that. Not everyone does a big budget movie for cash (or just cash). I think it's already been said that if the movie was going to be all action and no substance, he wasn't going to do it. That's what I'm defending him for. that woman said something stupid, plain and simple.

hehe.

Whoopi : "It's okay because I have done it too"
Crews: "It's okay because if I were as important as he is, I'd be doing it too"

I'm semi-joking of course.

But it wasn't that bad. Nobody emphasizes the "YOU'RE A GOOD GUY!!!!!" enough. :)

The best part is when he says "You're a P" (rhymes with click) and it sounds like he's still in puberty. It would've been better had he donned the Batman voice. More masculine at least as opposed to spoiled Diva.

******** bale*** detected. Jesus man, I was just asking if anyone had the photo. No need to write an essay on defending your precious Bale. But I'm not really sure did you aim your rant towards me. (Prolly not entirerly, 'cause in your third paragraph you're clearly referencing to Crook.)

And no need to get angry about my first sentence. If you'd visit some certain /tv/ you'd know, it ain't supposed to be an insult. (Or maybe you visit and get the joke. I dunno.)

I remember it. Great photo. Michelle Williams looks like a little child in it... Weird.

I'm gonna be honest. The only time I've ever heard someone flip out that much for that long are women and young kids. My gfs, mom, cousins have all reacted like that over something ranging from trivial to serious but they go on and on into an emotional tirade b/c they just can't let it go. Bale was justified but even his most staunch supporters can't deny that it was a very immature reaction. I know the popular excuse seems to be that he's method acty. But c'mon man. He didn't just yell at him 2 or 3 times. He kept going on and on and on like it was that time of the month. That's immaturity, not method acty intense. Let's call a spade, a spade rather then excuse it as being "artistic" "method" "intense"

Oh, absolutely. "As a guy, you're gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood" in a cool Bale-Bat-voice. :brucebat:
