The Dark Knight The Christian Bale/Bruce Wayne thread

I dont understand Jack playing Jack thing and never will. I always found their statement very untrue, generalizing and misinformed. About the only common trace I see in Jack's characters, and in only very few movies, is his devilish persona, like in Witches of Eastwick or Batman. And the same can be said about every actor and every director or musician - theres always a certain characteristics that they always carry on, and thats what makes them them. I fail to see how Jack's role in, for example, Prizzi's Honor, Chinatown or Wolf are in any way similar. There are big similarities between The Shining and Batman because they were intended - Jack's performance in The Shining was one of 2 reasons why Bob Kane wanted him for the job (the other being that he looked like Kane's Joker - same hairline, hair, pointy eyebrows), and if the performance for Joker is suppose to be based on a completely insane , axe wielding lunatic who has great fun killing, then count me in.

Besides, Jack was behaving exactly like Joker from the comics and doing what Joker in the comics was doing. Joker from the comics, just like Hammil's Joker, was like a ringmaster, someone incredibly energetic and entertaining. He really WAS a clown, a clown of crime

Stanley Kubrick: I believe that Jack is one of the best actors in Hollywood, perhaps on a par with the greatest stars of the past like Spencer Tracy and Jimmy Cagney. His work is always interesting, clearly conceived and has the X-factor, magic. (Michel Ciment int.)

Well said.

Solid reasoning is usually required to make an effective point. Just saying 'It sucks.' is a hollow statement, and therefore useless.

Okay then. Batman uses his image (and his silence) to strike fear into criminals. he doesn't need to growl like a dog. Bale's Batman voice to me is hokey... almost laughable. Actually it makes me groan. That's what it does.

As a bit of trivia, it was Burton who originated the idea of Batman changing his voice while in the costume. While it may sound to many nowadays that its just a natural thing to do, it was never mentioned in the comic books before 89 and not used in any of the serials or the TV show or any of the cartoons before 89

I was suspicious of that! Nice.

Yeah, there's tons of references to "the batvoice" in the comics.

Especially during Knightfall; numerous references to Jean Paul having to learn the voice and what have you - described in ways like "crushed glass" and such.

In wasn't aware of this even when I never heard of it before B89.

I unfortunately lost everything when my computer crashed, but I promise once I find all the articles and quotations back, Ill post them

I also had such a great interview with Ringwood who said it was him who changed Batsuit into armor because he wasnt a batman fan before, thinking he looks silly. therefore, he redesigned the suit to be a black rubber and kevlar.

EDIT: found it

For director Tim Burton, the Batsuit was one of Batman’s biggest challenges. “The toughest thing was making him look good,” recalled Burton. “We’d try all sorts of movements. Then we’d say, ‘How about changing your voice?’
