The Cloverfield Paradox

Honestly didn't know this movie existed before today.

Is ‘Cloverfield Station’ the Title of the Next ‘Cloverfield’ Movie?

The next Cloverfield sequel has kicked off a cryptic viral marketing campaign, which includes at least two websites that fans can scavenge for clues. A release date for the film has also been confirmed for the spring, after being pushed back from February. But the one thing the third Cloverfield film is missing is a title.

The Cloverfield movies have always been veiled in secrecy, but the mystery of the third untitled Cloverfield has been the most infuriating, if only because its tentative title, God Particle, was already pretty darn good. But thanks to some eagle-eyed Reddit sleuths, we may have just found out the official Cloverfield sequel title.

A Reddit thread posits the potential title of the third Cloverfield movie to be Cloverfield Station. This rumor came about after a Redditor discovered that an FX lighting artist named Rui (Ray) Xu on Linkedin had listed “Cloverfield Station” among his credits. Now, this could all be chocked up to one of the many unsubstantiated rumors flying around Reddit, but since then, a Facebook and Instagram account have been discovered for the title, as well as domains for CloverfieldStation.com and CloverfieldStationmovie.com. Naturally, take all of this with a grain of salt, as this could be the work of mischievous internet users who claimed the domains after the rumor spread.

The official viral marketing for the third Cloverfield movie has revealed no hint of its actual title, only teasing information on a “revolutionary new energy technology” from Tagruato, the company that was likely responsible for awakening the huge monster that attacked New York in the first Cloverfield.

This would be an unusual way for a Cloverfield title to be revealed, but I wouldn’t put it past the franchise’s marketing department to test new ways to engage fans. 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s title was revealed merely two months before the movie’s release, in a trailer in front of 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. Meanwhile, the original Cloverfield was actually a working title for the 2008 found-footage film, which stuck after the hype for the teaser trailer grew monumentally.

If official, Cloverfield Station would be an accurate, if on-the-nose title for a film about astronauts aboard a space station who, after an accident with a particle accelerator, discover that Earth has vanished. The plot thickens as the astronauts discover traces of another space station nearby. I will briefly mourn the loss of God Particle as a title, which is a term for the real Higgs boson — a theoretical particle that imbues all other particles in the universe with mass. Here’s Bill Nye explaining it, just for clarity. The god particle is theorized to have a part in the eventual destruction of the universe, which is a subject ripe for movie-making. I’m sure the movie’s subject won’t be any different with a title change, but God Particle is so tantalizing a title that it feels like it would be a missed opportunity to call it something else.

The untitled Cloverfield sequel is directed by Julius Onah based on a script by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung. It stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo and Zhang Ziyi, and is due out April 20, 2018.

Not one teaser. Which is OK.

Apparently there's a rumour going around Sundance that this is shifting toward a being a Netflix release.

That would be a shame. I enjoy the concept of a theatrical anthology series.

Maybe it'll be like Annihilation, where it pops up on Netflix internationally.

Good. Id prefer small films like this go straight to streaming rather than be exclusive to theaters for months. I've almost entirely stopped seeing films like this in theaters. I'll watch blockbusters and horror films in theaters, but that's about it these days. If studios would embrace streaming and release films immediately to streaming services they'd get more money from me and others that can't be bothered to drive to the theater for every film we want to watch.

Well, viral marketing has finally started to pick up, so that's something.

And how do we know if this film is 'small' in scale if we barely know anything about it?

Netflix Circling ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel ‘The God Particle?

Netflix has been uncharacteristically quiet in the acquisitions marketplace at the Sundance Film Festival, but word in Park City is that Netflix has a big picture deal cooking. No confirmation yet, but I hear the streaming service is bearing down on a deal to acquire from Paramount nearly all rights to God Particle, the Julius Onah-directed film that is considered a sequel to the low budget genre hit Cloverfield. It is produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot. Consider it a strong rumor at this point that is building steam. Paramount had it dated April 20, but I’ve heard that Netflix might debut it on the streaming service more quickly than that. It would be the second recent deal between Paramount and Netflix, after the latter acquired international on another genre film, the Natalie Portman-starrer Annihilation. Here, Netflix would take the world with the exception of China. Elizabeth Debicki, Daniel Bruhl, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Chris O’Dowd, Ziyi Zhang and David Oyelowo lead the ensemble cast.

Whatever gets the movie closer to us, I'm game.

Honestly, its kind of sad seeing how this is getting treated considering the talent involved and the fact that 10 Cloverfield Lane was a pretty damn solid film. Of course I will see it whenever and wherever regardless, but I really liked the idea of a Cloverfield related anthology series, but if the studio isn't that confident in its quality than I don't see them making more unless it ends up being a surprise hit.

Netflix in Talks to Acquire 'Cloverfield' Sequel From Paramount
The culling of Paramount’s release slate is being spearheaded by chairman Jim Gianopulos, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Gianopulos took over the reins in spring 2017, watching the movies he had inherited and making some hard choices.

“He sat down and looked at what is theatrical, what is not in this day and age,” says one source. Certain movies were not making the cut.

Sources say the movie needed some work and while Abrams expressed an intent to get down to business in post-production, it was too little, too late. Several sources suggested that Abrams’ attention may be taken by his unexpected new assignment, the final installment of the Star Wars Skywalker episodes, which he signed on to in September after the firing of director Colin Trevorrow.

Paramount had no comment. Calls to Abrams' reps were unreturned at press time.

Netflix snatching up all the **** lately.

WOW, Paramount has NO FAITH in their line-up anymore, do they? Is this because Transformers flopped last year? Because they should KNOW why it flopped: NO ONE LIKED IT! Cloverfield doesn't have to suffer because of it!

Paramount has been floundering for years. I'd have been far less shocked if they were the ones being discussed to be absorbed by Disney rather than the relatively more successful Fox.

The previous 2 Cloverfield films have been small budgeted oeor small scale films. Cloverfield was all found footage and supposedly cost around $25 million. Cloverfield Lane cost around $15 million and spends 95% of its runtime in one small set. This isn't a blockbuster scale series. I doubt the third film is going to be a blockbuster.

Releasing a film to streaming services isnt a slight against the film. In 2018 streaming is just as much a viable release strategy as a theatrical release strategy. Digital streaming of films and tv has overtaken physical discs market share. Netflix alone has 100 million + subscribers. Factor in Vudu, MoviesAnywhere, ITunes, FandangoNow, Amazon Video, Hulu, Google Store, PlayStation Network, Microsoft Video, and Ultraviolent and the number of people that can and do stream films and tv is hundreds of millions.

People need to stop considering digital streaming the province of low tier reject films. That hasn't been the case in nearly a decade. Well known directors and actors routinely make shows and movies exclusively for digital release rather than theatrical release. They don't consider it a slight or a slap in the face or disrespectful.

Considering the low box offices of Cloverfield and Cloverfield Lane it makes financial sense that Paramount release this new film on streaming services.

Paramount wishes they had FOX or even SONY franchises right about now. This is a studio that made less money than Lionsgate at the domestic box office last year.

I mean, in terms of small budget, of course, but Cloverfield wasn't exactly a small scale movie. At least, not in the traditional sense. There was still a giant monster running around Manhattan and knocking down buildings. I'll give you 10 Cloverfield Lane though.

And given what the plot might entitle and all the speculation around it, we might get a few surprises.

I am very excited for this film as I love the 2 prior films and this universe. So curious to see what it is. The viral marketing as usual is always a lot of fun.

God Particle might be coming to Netflix? Interesting!
