The Cloverfield Paradox

It made it look like a direct prequel. But we'll all soon find out either way.
Wasn't the Cloverfield monster the result of bad experimenting by a Japanese company drilling underwater or some such? This one makes it look like it came from outerspace.

Maybe it came from outer space and ended up below ground until they drilled it up, who knows, lol.

It was supposed to come from space in the first one. During the end credits of the first movie (I think) when they show the footage of the two leads having their date/day out, you can see a large object crashing into the water in the distance. Blink and you miss it, kind of thing.

I remember JJ confirming it back in 2008 that Clover was pre-historic, and Tagruato woke it up from its slumber with the oil drill. There are pictures of it from the ARG.

Oh right, I totally forgot about that! Damn, it's been a decade. I feel old.

EDIT: Ok you guys mentioned it

LOL, All these years and I never even noticed that. IMHO, the movie itself wasn't all that memorable besides some of the special effects and the marketing campaign with the psycho girlfriend.

I loved the first film, very memorable to me. Was a great theater experience. A lot of buzz for it great audience reactions.

It was good, scary realistic, just nauseating to actually watch, lol. :p

This is interesting. According to this video, the oil rig incident happened December 26/27, 2007. Meanwhile, the thing dropping into the ocean in the background happened on April 27.

Much respect to the film lovers who actually analyze and figure it all out.

I thought 10 Cloverfield Lane was the better film.
I agree, because I found the characters in the 1st one to be both bland AND annoying. 10 Cloverfield Lane's characters were much more watchable, imo.

I also agree, plus no found footage garbage. I'm sorry, but the found footage gimmick was already old by the time Cloverfield came out.

I get why the gimmick is used because it makes things cheaper and it means you can make a high-concept story on a micro-budget. But it's still a gimmick and an unbelievable one at that. Because these films always have to think of contrived reasons why one of the bystanders in the story is filming and actually continuing to film everything. In such a situation, real people would drop the ****ing camera and run like ****ing hell.

Lizzie Caplan was fine (and fine if you know what i mean) in the first film.

Love that guy's videos. He goes over a lot of stuff in the ARG and finds these small but interesting connections with the Cloververse. Can't wait to see what he has to say about Cloverfield Paradox.

And oh yea, that reminds me:

Something else about that video, apparently a satellite that apparently fell was mentioned in a memo from early January 2008. So...the thing on April 27 couldn't have been a satellite...unless it was a different satellite?

Might be mistaken, but I think he goes into that in his following Cloverfield videos.

I have a feeling this movie will connect to 10 Cloverfield Lane too.

It'd be perplexing if they didn't. Maybe they'll connect Clover to the aliens somehow?

He does a good job of outlining more of the overall events here.

To me this whole video is more enthralling to me for some reason than the entirety of the first Cloverfield movie. I think what I enjoy more is the world building elements more so than the story from the movie.

As someone who likes the first movie, yeah, I see where you're coming from. Though it's good to see the process Matt Reeves has gone through as a director with this as his starting point.

I recall that there was a similar attempt at a viral campaign for Battle Los Angeles. It seemed to suggest the aliens had come to Earth before and also engaged with US military forces before. But none of that was in play in the film. Even the first trailer was like showing different cases of alien arrivals in the past, and seemed like they completely dumped it for the movie and didn't acknowledge it at all, just some lip service about the aliens were acting like foreign invaders and were likely there to steal Earth's water supply.
