I've been talking about this subject quite a bit in a few threads around here, so I figured I might as well make a thread about it.

Now, we already know that Weisman has said he doesn't have any plans to kill of Gwen in the series, but potentially in a DTV movie. I suppose the big questions I have for this are:

(going off the idea that we get a full run of this series, being 5 or more seasons..)

Do you think they should do The Death of Gwen Stacy?

If you want them to, how would you approach it?(change/keep in terms of original source material)

I personally think that, if this show gets a full run, that it would be almost criminal to not do this story, since the material itself has the potential to rival Mask of the Phantasm in terms of animated movies. Not to mention that the emotional weight the movie would carry if we get a full five seasons of build up for Gwen's character. It just seems too big of an opportunity not to tell.

That being said, there are obviously going to have to be some changes from the original source material in terms of how they do it. In the comics, Harry hadn't found out his father was the Green Goblin yet, and he was also battling drug addiction during the events of the story. Harry has both already gone through his drug addiction and found out his father was GG, so that's already changed. (Though you could have him relapsing during the movie if you wanted.) Still, depending on how the show develops, changes will undoubtedly be made. My question is, what would you want to change?

One interesting idea I had was that if they actually kept Captain Stacy alive during Gwen's Death. It would be quite interesting to see how the dynamic between him and Peter would develop after she is killed, especially given the circumstance that SS has established a very Batman/Gorden-esque relationship between the two, with Stacy all but saying out loud that he knows who Spidey is.

Any who, what do you all think?

As long as the movie isn't called "The Death of Gwen Stacy" nor does does it allude to her dying, in trailers or whatever, I'm totally for it. Keeping the element of surprise would definitly shock me as a viewer not expecting her to die.

That's an interesting point, I never really thought about that. Though, it seems hard to get around that, or to not even allude to it, seeing as how it's such a big moment.

However, you could easily have it named "Return of the Green Goblin" or something of that nature and focus around the fact that Norman's returned to pick up his old mantle.

would they show that in a kids show

Well, if you read my first post, Weisman said he doesn't plan on doing it in the series, only a Direct to TV DVD situation, similar to Return of the Joker for the Batman Beyond series.

If they did that, they would have far more leeway, and they could even make the movie pg-13 (like Return of the Joker, or the Ultimates). This type of thing is done quite often. The creators of the Batman animated series have done quite a few animated movies that are very adult. Mask of the Phantasm and Return of the Joker probably the most so out of all of them.

Love this idea. It would be even killer if it was a theatrical film.

It probably won't be 'Death of Gwen Stacy' but something like 'Tragedy' or something like the episodes.

I hope she doesn't die at all, I really like her characterization in general, and it'd be nice to get a version that, for once, doesn't die.

The reason they're giving Gwen such a good characterization is one of the reasons why this story should be done. It would make it all the more emotional. The Death of Gwen Stacy is a huge story of the Spidey mythos. It's become a part of the character, and is arguably almost as important as having Uncle Ben die.

Not only that, I would also like to see them take a crack at actually transitioning MJ into the role of eventually taking Pete's position as the next true love, and Gwen's death was a big event that brought them together.

I have no problem with seeing an adaptation of it as long as Captain Stacy is done first to see the ramifications on Gwen and Peter. And the idea of doing it should be well after its initial television run so there is no holding back. As far as staying 100% true to comic, as long as it involves GG and a bridge I am happy. I have faith that Weisman can pull off any other minor changes he plans.

YEa i said it before i rather them wait and do it as a potential dtv movie and all that. I would love to see what they could do with this story and it should happen. After peter/gwen actually get to have a true relationship for a bit.

The Captain Stacy is an interesting thing for me. Now that they've established a kind of Batman/Gordon relationship with Peter/Stacy, I almost don't want to see him go. There's a big part of me that would like to see Stacy stay around, stay as Spidey's "Gordon." in a sense.

Also, I would love to see how Stacy would react to his daughters death. Would he blame Peter? Would he go after him? It reminds me of the B:TAS episode where Barbara gets fear gassed, and ends up having a hallucination that she gets killed, and in his grief Gordon chases down Bruce.

However, maybe Stacy wouldn't blame him. Maybe he would understand. But either way, it could make for an incredibly powerful moment.

Still, Captain Stacy's death is a big moment in the mythos as well, and that could be a very powerful story to tell also.

I agree. As I said above, I would only want this to happen if they do this in a DTV format, and have run at least 4 to 5 seasons, to really build up Gwen's relationship with Peter. That will make the story all the more powerful when she actually does die.
