The Debates Thread

Not sure how exactly you can claim someone "won" a debate where they kept denying things that were clearly factual? Some of the things Pence denied, Trump literally just said last week!

Kaine was out of line with all the interruptions to be sure, but that still doesn't provide any more substance whatsoever to the drivel coming out of Pence's mouth.

Kaine reminds me of Donald Blythe from House of Cards...

This debate helps the Republican cause for me as by being closer it doesn't continue the Clinton Trump debating skill gulf and introduces the lack of discipline that Trump showed by continually interrupting unnecessarily onto the Democrat side too. On the other hand these 2 along with Trump are making Clinton look like the only one who can debate like a President should be able to.

I dont see how anyone that watched that can say that Pence won the debate. He did worse than Trump and Im sure he chewed him out last night after it was done.

Well, the majority of viewers thought Pence won so...

I was hoping to get a more substantive discussion on policy since we aren't going to get that at the Presidential debate. Instead we got a constant barrage of Tim Kaine interruptions of Trump quotes. Half the time it didn't seem like he was even answering the question but would go right into some pre-prepared Trump line. This forced Pence to spend his time defending whatever nonsense Trump spouted then when he was talking Kaine kept interrupting like a petulant child. I have not been impressed with Kaine, I wasn't impressed with an op-ed he wrote in CNN when he was first announced as Hillary's running mate on the need to increase low income housing. I am less impressed after watching this debate, he comes across as a clown. I'm also saying this as someone who dislikes Pence because of the religious liberty laws he signed in his state. Kaine may have played well with the base but the way he conducted himself isn't going to play well with the never trumpers or independents or moderates.

So my take is the winner last night was the Mike Pence 2020 campaign, while the loser was the Donald Trump 2016 campaign

Yeah, he really did make himself look like the frontrunner going in, which is a bad proposition for Republicans because if he gets into the general he's not going to be able to shake Trump and will have to defend him again. Unlike someone like Kasich who was consistent in his anti-Trump position and turned down the job that Pence took.

My take was Mike Pence basically got 90 minutes to sell himself and stylistically he came off looking good, while Kaine might have came off looking annoying but he got 90 minutes to tell us everything wrong with Donald Trump without much backlash because Pence was all about himself

Care to explain how Pence "defended" Trump by just outright lying about things they both said saying they didn't make such statements? He also did not defend any of the outrageous claims made by Trump when asked to do so. All I saw in my Bookface feed after the debate was fact checks on how Pence lied about the things he and Trump said. Not sure how that could be considered a win.

Because winning isn't about facts, its about the feeeels :o

Ha, Hillary needs to mention this next debate if they talk about temperament or winning temperaments. Can Trump handle being 2nd best, especially to someone he's not allowed to criticise/insult?!

Lol.

Can you even imagine what he would say if, during the debate, Clinton said something to the effect that he should take lessons on how to behave himself from his running mate?

:exp::exp::exp::exp:

I am going to miss Joe Biden so much.

Pence won only if you don't count what they actually said.

me too. I liked Biden which is why I dont get why people are so worried about Kaine bc he comes across very much like Biden did and the Obama/Biden ticket did fine without him being treated as a liability

If that putz on stage left yesterday is what I have to look forward to in 2020 I'll scream.

I really can see some form of Pence insult coming out of Trump's mouth between now and the election with the right provocation. The Democrats just need to get fully onboard the Pence 2016 campaign and Trump will eventually implode.

He won but part of his tactic for winning was to make denials of things Trump said that everyone knows Trump said. This can be used very effectively after the event if Hillary and co know what they are doing. An ad consisting just of Trump saying those things followed straight after by Pence denying he ever said them each time could work well.

At this point, Trump and co have given so many things that can be used in attack ads Hillary probably doesn't have enough money to use all of it haha.

I am curious as to what she is sitting on, though...

Trump is saying he's getting a lot of credit for picking Pence.

My take on the debate is Kaine didn't do a great job and if you look at the debate strictly from a stylistic point of view Pence "won" last night. That being said the news headlines today are pretty much all about how Pence lied multiple times to cover for both his and Trump's past statements so in the end the debate will do Trump no favors outside maybe making people that were never going to vote for Clinton anyhow feel a little bit better about themselves by voting for Trump. I doubt Pence did anything that will stop the bleeding. The only people that can look at the headlines today and say Pence did a good job are people that just flat out refuse to listen to documented fact.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/pub...r_2016/voters_don_t_trust_media_fact_checking

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 29% of all Likely U.S. Voters trust media fact-checking of candidates’ comments. Sixty-two percent (62%) believe instead that news organizations skew the facts to help candidates they support.

I am no fan of Rasmussen polling but even if they are off by 10% that is really low

You can't trust that report. The lamestream media is clearly biased against media fact-checking. :oldrazz:

But denying things that have been said is different to fact checking vague statistics for eg as the voters themselves can clearly see or can clearly be shown that things have been lied about. If Trump says 20% of immigrants commit a crime within their first 5 years his diehards will take it as gospel or at the very least ignore anything that suggests different but seeing a video of Trump saying something in an interview and 2 seconds later seeing a clip of Pence denying it was ever said will get through that denial and register even if they pretend otherwise.
