The Departed - Reviews

for me yes, technically Raging Bull is probably his best and thematically it's Taxi Driver, others of course will plump for Goodfellas but Ive never liked that movie personally.
The Departed has a rare thing in a Scorsese movie in that it has someone you genuinely like and root for as the main character.

who do you mean? i personally couldn't root for either of the leads

Yes, yes, The Departed is great. Best movie of the year, blah blah, I love it. I'm irked by the fact that the script supervisor took so many naps during the production, though. Also that visuals took a back seat in the Denali. Like, the 3rd row - back seat. Anyway, whatever.

Elaborate ?

Man, I want to see it SOOOO bad but Netflix is conspiring to keep me away from it. :cmad: :csad:

Hunter, was Leo's Blood Diamond performance more deserving then The Departed?

It was a very different type of character and IMO more of an out and out lead performance where as the Departed was a co lead.

As for more deserving,in a way it had more range so yes perhaps i would say it was

ok, I watched it again last night and I am amazed he wasn't nominated for The Departed. The emotion he showed, was amazing.

I definately agree with a earlier post of yours, the guy is amazing. The best actor working today IMO.

In truth he should have had 2 noms, both performances were outstanding and i agree on the emotion he showed in the Departed which is why the earlier post from Cryptic name puzzled me.

To me no one combines movie star charisma and acting talent as well as Leo right now:up:

Agreed, the guy is on a hell of a role...his last 4 (haven't seen Blood Diamond) roles have all been pretty ridiculous

The Departed
The Aviator
Catch Me if you Can
Gangs of New York

Leo will get his in the Rise of Roosevelt so don't be worried about it... even if his performance never merits one again... he will get one as a life time acheivment award like most actors do these days

Watched it yesterday and...Jesus tapdancing Christ is it awesome. Seriously, from the moment Gimme Shelter came on with Jack narrating, I was hooked until the very end.

It's definately one of the best Scorsese movies I've seen--even though I haven't seen many of his other movies, just this, Last Temptation of Christ, and the first-half of Taxi Driver ('cause it was on regular cable, and therefore raped by the censors)--and one of the recent movies that came out.

I have seen a lot of his movies, and The Departed is one of his best. It might be my favorite one, also. Up there with Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Taxi Driver. I didn't like The Aviator personally.

I think Blood Diamond is his best peformance yet! Cant get enough of his character in that movie!

I'm a big fan of Marty and this is by far one of his best films, It ranks there with Goodfellas (Might be his best to date) Raging Bull, Taxi Driver etc.

I didn't care for Blood Diamond. It had some serious tonal issues. It was as if the director couldn't decide if he was filming a serious Constant Gardner clone or Commando. It was an Anthony Minghella movie with unnecessary action sequences. And it was entirely predictable and implausible. Frack DeBeers though.

Love it, but it is getting too much praise as his "best." He won the Oscar because it was the best this year and Scorcesse was overdue but it certainly doens't stack up to Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets,, The Aviator or The Age of Innocence.

But it is still a great movie, albeit somewhat flawed and self-indulgent in parts and that is why I rank it more with Gangs of New York, which was also good but a flawed movie.

The Departed was an awesome film, loved it, its one of my favorite films. I like this film a tad more than Goodfellas and the soundtrack is amazing for both films. DiCaprio, Nicholson, Damon, and Wahlberg did an excellent job in the film and Martin Scorsese is an EXCELLENT director and did you guys hear that they're making a sequel?

Just re-watched the film.

Very good film, but one thing I can't get my mind off...HOW IN THE HELL DID MARK WAHLBERG GOT NOMINATED FOR OSCAR OVER JACK NICHOLSON WHO WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!?

Seriously, this has to be one of Nicholson's best roles, and yet Mark Whalberg who was OK, got nominated!

Yeah, it's kind of head-scratching isn't it. Nicholson is in his element (I love the bit where he slags off the priests). Why Wahlberg got nominated is weird - kind of like Christian Bale should have got best actor (rather than best supporting actor) for the Fighter, because he makes the film.

Leo and Matt really shone in this film - sure it's Nicholson's movie, but they really come to the party.

All in all, I thought it a great Scorsese film - not quite Goodfellas, but still a real classic, and thoroughly deserving of best picture and best director.

Every couple of years when I start to lose faith in the human race's ability to make good movies I watch this film.
