The Director of THOR 3

:cwink: Seems the audience disagrees..
TG has made over 440 Million WW and the TDW grossed over 644 Million..
So Taylor has joined the Billion Dollar club of Directors...
Hack does not apply in his case....
Michael Bay respectfully disagrees. :)

He made two hit films (one of which was only a hit out of the states) that were both based off well known and well liked brand names. Big whoop.

I'm not looking forward to this film much (very low confidence) but they have chosen a very talented director this time, at least. And one who provides some behind the camera diversity no less!

I was disappointed that it was another 'unknown' director but I'm starting to like him, from what I found he has like 2 critically acclaimed films which is great, I'm excited :D

Now I want to know who's gonna be the cinematographer for this film but I guess we'll have to wait a lot for that.

Lets hope Marvel was telling the truth when they stated this was going to be the pivotal Film leading into Infinity Wars..
Time will tell...

To be honest I think fans are taking that quote waaaaaaay to seriously

They haven't mentioned it since so it will be interesting to see how this all pans out. They don't want to set themselves up to fail that's for sure. But I took that statement as meaning that Marvel recognizes they've yet to give us the definitive Thor film and that they are taking it extra seriously this time.

This director is an intriguing choice. I don't know if there are many big name directors that would sign on for "Thor 3" so I have zero disappointment in that regard. The fact that he beat out Ruben Fleischer is significant. I dunno. I got a good feeling here. Negative Nancies be damned. This is by far my most anticipated Marvel film. I hope Waititi kills it!

Not gonna lie... Not feeling this. Not sure if this is gonna be for me. The emphasis on humor in Marvel films is already a bit much, TWS being an outlier recently. The undercutting of tension and tin eared humor in TDW really ruined that film for me. If others liked it, fine, but it turned me off big time, which with it's underwhelming action, plot and villains, didn't help the second THOR film to my eyes, and I still ADORE the first Thor film.

Now... Saying all that, this could still work for Marvel since they seem to be on a run getting directors with a background in comedy to turn out hits for them, but for myself... Yeah, this is a bit disappointing. The type of story Ragnarok should be for me as a fan, doesn't need a big dose of levity. It should concentrate on an epic story of the gods of Asgard battling a dark, demonic force. But that's me. Hopefully this is more TWS than TDW in outcome.

I've heard nothing but good things about What We Do In The Shadows. I'll be checking it out soon.

This looks like a similar case to John Watts and Cop Car (which I absolutely adored) but Waititi seems to be a little more experienced. So, I guess Jemaine Clement will be playing Surtur, then? :)

No, he's going to be Ulik...

Surprising choice (as usual). I really don't see the need for all the negativity. Waititi still isn't confirmed and we have literally no idea what his vision for Thor is. For all we know, he could have pitched the next Dark Knight to Feige...

Keep in mind The Winter Soldier had comedy directors as well.

Yup.

I'm sure Marvel has taken lessons from some of T:TDW's weaker aspects. For me, it isn't that there was necessarily too much comedy in T:TDW, it's that a lot of the comedy was either qualitatively bad (all of Darcy's stuff seemed to have been pulled straight from some mediocre CBS sitcom) or extremely poorly timed.

With the Directors chair now occupied hopefully we will get the plot as well as the cast commitments soon...

Have to agree with all of this, I am cautiously optimistic however as I think they know TDW was a disappointment, but we will see, I agree there shouldn't be much humour in this one but it is an MCU movie so that might be hoping for a bit much.

I think just by announcing the title with the word Ragnarok in it you should expect a shift in tone. But it can't be too jarring or Thor will lose the audience that actually likes these movies already.

This is going to be a tricky one. General audiences loved this film but certain fan circles love to bash it. How do you gain new audiences without sabotaging your existing? In the end just try and make the best Thor film you can and I'm sure that's what Marvel wants to do. Can't wait to see what they come up with.

Agreed. People keep acting like Ragnarok is going to be some super-dark Man of Steel-esque brooding-fest. We all know that won't be the case. Ragnarok will probably be darker than the first two, but it'll definitely still have a lot of humour as well.

and that's why I think people like to lean on the Winter Soldier comparison so much

that movie had a number of really funny and well-timed jokes, but it was also significantly "darker" than any other Marvel film

they just have to try to hit that balance again

Humor is Marvel Studios' secret weapon. They will always have some degree of comedy.

I finally got around to watching Waititi's What We Do in the Shadows. I liked it more than Boy and Eagle Vs. Shark. It was low budget, of course, which was part of it's charm, but it definitely had me laughing at a few bits. Now that I've seen all of Waititi's films, I can say that I'm at the very least comfortable with this choice. His comedy is not over the top, so I don't think people should be worried about this being a quip-fest or anything like that. The funniest bits of all of his movies, IMO, have been through subtle touches. The biggest strength that was evident in all of his movies was that he tells character-based stories, which I think Thor really needs after TDW. I think he has the potential to surprise a lot of people, if he ultimately gets the job.

Who has said that? No one from what I can see, I just hope this is a bit more serious than TDW was.

TWS had the perfect balance, but there have also been MCU movies like GOTG and Ant Man which had a lot of humour but also had a great deal of emotion and heart which made the humour not as intrusive as it was in the likes of TDW. I would also put the first Thor movie in with GOTG and Ant Man as well, plenty of humour buts lots of emotion and heart to balance it out.

Just saw Boy and Shark vs Eagle, I really think I'm liking the idea of Waititi directing. I plan to watch What We Do in the Shadows next.

I hadn't heard of this guy at all... but then when he was announced, I read that he directed some FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS episodes. One of my favorite shows. Ever. So I was super excited.

I just watched WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Absolutely, insanely brilliant. I have no idea what to expect of THOR RAGNAROCK, and now I cannot wait.

(Also, he is adorbs as Viago... I have a bit of a director crush now.)

I haven't really frequented this forum much. Are people liking Waititi or not?

I think he's a very interesting, potentially inspired, choice. I get good vibes from him.
