I believe the idea was that Earth-A was in an alternate dimension as opposed to Counter Earth which is in our actual Solar System but on the opposite side of the Sun.
. . . but I'm really taxing my memory here, and even when they first came out, it took me a couple readings to figure out what was going on.
Yes, that's exactly what it was.
Counter-Earth was a creation of the High Evolutionary on the opposite side of the sun in the same orbit as Earth, and it figures into the original Warlock series. It's also where the Brute - Reed Richards of Counter-Earth was introduced.
It also introduced the concept of Warlock as a Christ figure to Counter-Earth -- which eventually plays into his multiple resurrections in the Infinity group of mini series and later Warlock appearances.
The Earth-A version of the 4 I believe only had Reed and Ben go up in the rocket ship -- Reed becomes the Thing and Ben gets Reed's powers and ends up marrying Sue. Johnny was thought lost in the Vietnam war, but I don't recall just how he ended up as Gaard with no recollection of his life as Johnny Storm.
