Iron Man The first superhero to actually...save the WORLD.

Right.
It's a blasphemous, atrocious abomination of a movie...with a couple really cool effects scenes, amongst some of the worst effects that have been seen in a big budget feature in 10 years.

Didn't Superman save the world in the first, second, and returns?

Superman clearly saved the world in Superman Returns as well.

But all Iron Man did was go to a Middle Eastern village.

I don't consider saving a small village "The World". He'll get a chance to do that when he's with The Avengers.

Well, to be completely fair, he didn't save the world, he saved one village in Afghanistan. :oldrazz:

Atleast it wasn't New York. :o

Wrong, the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer saved the world from Galactus.

Iron Man is the first hero to save the world in a movie that isn't utter crap. That's how it stands out. :(

Yea, I am aware of that now. :o

Didn't Superman save the world in the first, second, and returns?

Superman saved California in the first. He...kinda...yea did save the world in the second but most of the fight scenes took place in Metropolis and the Fortress. Like I said earlier, Iron Man stands out visually.

Well, we have that to look forward to in the sequels. :yay:

Iron Man flying all the way from L.A (or wheerever he was) to that village and saving the day was one of the most impressive and heroic things I've seen in a movie. Not just a superhero movie, a MOVIE. That scene guaranteed this movie would be good especially since it really introduced Iron Man.

Batman saved the world in both Batman Forever and Batman & Robin as Riddler and Freeze both planned to take over the entire world after conquering Gotham.

But those movies stayed within the main characters city. Iron Man actually went to the middle east! Visually its different from those movies.

FF2 went all around the world.

The Four did save the world in RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER now that I think about it.

Its more impressive than Superman rebuilding the great wall of China with a blink of an eye. :o

I just hope we get more of that in the sequel. The ending with [BLACKOUT]with the battle in L.A. or whatever[/BLACKOUT] didn't satisfy me. They should have [BLACKOUT]fought somewhere else.[/BLACKOUT]

So...I hope the sequel is more [BLACKOUT]global.[/BLACKOUT]

Yeah, that would be nice to see.

Sorry didn't read past the "they saved the world from Galactus" post. No they may save the world from Galactus accept that Franklin isn't born yet.

Mek

(I never liked Spider-Man as a kid. I also never liked Iron Man, I thought they were both boring. Then I see Spider-Man 1 and it blows my head off, now it's pretty much unanimous that Iron Man kicks hella ass.....but I was always the huge Fantastic Four fan.....and what do I get?
What a revolting development. :()

I always liked Spidey and Ol' Shellhead, so I guess I profited the most from that fandom. Still, I can feel your pain on the Fantastic Four films. They should've been Star Wars Lite. Instead, we got the usual Fox disappointment.

I hope that announcement comes with "hey, we're going completely global next time."

Man that would be kick ass if they went gloabal next time :woot:
I can't wait till we get the announcement for number 2. Seems to be doing very good in the box office as far as I can tell.

I mean, yea, Superman tried to stop nuclear war in the fourth installment, but is this the first TRUE superhero movie where the main character tried to go beyond his city? In these superhero movies the hero pretty much only saves the citizens of his city. Iron Man actually went beyond that! I believe that what makes this movie stand out from the rest.
X2 was on a pretty big scale. Saving everyone on the planet from that machine.

I haven't seen Iron Man yet, and I haven't read the comics, so feel free to take this whole post with a grain of salt or just skip it, but I do think I understand why the critics are saying it's refreshing to finally have an adult superhero. I think some of those comments come from the fact that Iron Man seems the most emotionally adult character of all the superheroes we've been given thus far. I love Batman, but he & Daredevil are brooders (at least in the movies...I don't read the comics), and there's something very "James Dean-esque" that evokes a certain adolescent state of mind with brooders. You know, the whole, "no one understands me" schtick. Wolverine also has a bit of a "Rebel Without a Cause" thing going on. Tony Stark may be a middle-aged playboy, but mentally and emotionally, he's very much a man. Things happen, he deals with them (instead of dwells on them), and he moves on. He's devoid of melodrama, and there's nothing "emo" about him. He's not still caught up any events from his childhood (I'm sure being the son of a weapons tycoon responsible for the deaths of millions wasn't all peachy.). He also doesn't have an elderly mentor figure hovering over him to offer sage wisdom and pick him up when he falls, ala Alfred or Aunt May. He's a man of action who makes his own decisions. Which is why I think so many critics are finding this "adult superhero" so refreshing. He's not the first superhero who's older than a teenager, but he's the first one who is truly an adult.
Wow, that was very well said. :yay::up::applaud

^Ha, thanks, and now that I've actually seen the movie today, I stand by it. Iron Man is truly a man, and it is refreshing.:)

Life is unfair :csad:

We can only hope JMS manages to save Silver Surfer...

I wanted to see more Ironman vs. Ironmonger fighting. There's just something about watching two mechanized exoskeletons smacking each other around and trashing property left and right (Any of you notice how evil Ironmonger was that he literally yanked a motorcycle from its rider sending the guy sailing off into God knows where just to pummel Ironman with it.) that I found awesome.

I think I had quite enough Man vs Monger... I thought it was pretty perfect... maybe if they had some additional scenery rather than standard city street fare they could have done something kinda interesting, but any more on that fight would have seemed pointless to me. Maybe some interspersed talking moments, but I don't think I needed "more" from that fight scene.

First Adult Superhero is about right. Brooding is for adolescents. First to save the world? Not by a long shot... "First xxxxx, then the world" is a pretty indirect way to save the world.
