I just think (not speaking to you directly) that geeks are very selective when it comes to comedy or comedians. I've noticed it, usually on boards or in comments areas.

I think you're right on that.

There was no justifiable reason for bumping this thread.

But they're not actors nor ever claimed to be. They're comedians. I remember Rick Moranis saying how frustrating the films he made in the 1990's were because he wasn't an actor. He could improvise with other actors (as he did in the movies he made in the 1980's ie. Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, Strange Brew ect) but he found it terrible to try to memorize a studio script. I think people forget that.

These people are fine in moderation. But, as soon as they are new on the scene they quickly become the IT people in Hollywood, doing tons of movies, and then people get tired of them because they have no range or they simply pick movies to play off of what got them famous. I was fine with Michael Cera in Arrested Development and Superbad but then he keeps playing the same freaking thing in every freaking movie and he got old quick. Same with Seth Rogen. Same with Jack Black. The list goes on and on. Then you have some of these people picking truly awful movies to be in to try and stay relevant.

The ones that stay relevant are the ones that pick really good movies to be in and they aren't in two or three movies a year.

These are Fox's top 10 grossing movies ever not adjusted for inflation:
1 Avatar.........................$749,766,12...........12/18/09
2 Star Wars: Episode I.......$431,088,301..........5/19/99
3 Star Wars: Episode III.....$380,270,575..........5/19/05
4 Star Wars.....................$307,263,857..........5/25/77
5 Independence Day..........$306,169,268..........7/3/96
6 Star Wars: Episode II......$302,191,252..........5/16/02
7 Home Alone...................$285,761,243..........11/16/90
8 Return of the Jedi...........$252,583,617..........5/25/83
9 Night at the Museum.......$250,863,268..........12/22/06
10 X-Men: The Last Stand...$234,362,462..........5/26/06

Pretty sad when only half have been in the past decade. What does that say about Fox? If not for Avatar, I really think 20th Century Fox would be out of business.

Oh, for the love of Christ, are you serious?!?! Am I the only one who thinks this is just hyperbolic nonsense?!?

No. I even think there are articles that said Avatar saved Fox. It is a terribly mismanaged studio. They produce flop after flop.

Look at that list. They hadn't had a huge profit hit since 2006.

its sad that a good majority of those movies are god awful yet made so much money

5 out of 10 are Star Wars films. Thank God for George Lucas, eh?

Nice to see Home Alone still on the list :)

I am sure Star Wars sold more tickets than Avatar.

That's why that list is unadjusted. Adjusted would look something like this

1. Star Wars (1977) - $1,416,050,800
2. The Sound of Music (1965) - $1,132,202,200
3. Empire Strikes Back (1980) - $780,536,100
4. Avatar (2009) - $773,179,400
5. Return of the Jedi (1983) - $747,772,300
6. Star Wars: Episode I (1999) - $674,365,200
7. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) - $560,934,900
8. Independence Day (1996) - $550,687,600
9. Home Alone (1990) - $538,486,900
10. The Robe (1953) - $520,363,600

Avatar is still mighty impressive! And George Lucas still owns with 4 out of the 10.

Stop lying to yourself chaseter ,Fox were doing fine before Avater, that movie just made them bigger.Imo only WB and Disney are doing better than them, also what about the world wide numbers.I hear Ice Age 3 made more money than Toys Story 3 worldwide not domestic

Yes I am lying to myself. All hail Fox.

Ice Age 3 made 50 million more over seas but Toy Story made over $150 million more total.

very wrong seeing how ts3 is the no.1 highest grossing animated film ever
well.... thats what the dvd cover says anyway

Fox is a wonderful studio that allows creative freedom and produces quality movies 9 times out of 10. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

at this point, you can tell Fox is trying to change but it'll take years before it'll be fully repaired.

Fox Searchlight is the only saving grace for the studio.

btw, does anyone know what brand of movies that Fox 2000 do? I don't see the point of that studio, if they already have 'Searchlight' and '20th Century'.

20th century Fox gave up the property rights to Star Wars over 30 years ago so in reality the profit they make off the distribution rights is pennies in comparison to what they could have made.

Aren't Paramount doing better than all of them?

That's true. Here is the link again from boxofficemojo.com which shows domestic and foreign grosses for each studio in 2010.

http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2010&p=.htm

Take a quick glance at the top 20 movies domestically for the year and you'll get a general idea of how lousy this year has been for Fox financially. Upon further examination of Fox's top 5 grossing domestic films a negative domestic profit percentage for 4 of them is affirmed((Percy Jackson (-3.4)) (The A-Team (-17.5)), (Knight and Day (-21)), (Unstoppable(-14)). Only the worst businessman of all time with the IQ of the village idiot would be satisfied with these horrific numbers.

Unfortunately, for us there's at least one studio filled with village idiots who've damaged many profitable franchises through hiring hack filmmakers like there's no tomorrow.

The opening crawl of text in Family Guy's Something, Something, Dark Side sums up the history of the collective IQ of 20th century Fox CEO's perfectly.

I'm sorry, but I agree with those who say Fox would have almost been destroyed if not for Avatar. They spent the last 10 years destroying what makes films great, and because of that have lost a LOT of money. They have had more money going out then in for a long time... And yes, my father spoke to a fox employee on an airplane who said that they would have went bankrupt if not for Avatar. Believe it. Just compare their income to their purchases, and you will see. Fox almost died, but they would deny it.

If you are wondering just how stupid Fox can be...

Fox actually turned down Cameron's Avatar, even after he had thousands of pre-production artworks, and a proof of concept CG test footage that proved that he could do what he was claiming. This despite Cameron being responsible for the most successful movie of the past 20+ years(actually, and despite Fox funding Cameron to go ahead and make the test footage.

Fox came back to Cameron on their knees after he was about to sign a deal with Disney for Avatar, and even then, Fox did NOT fully fund the movie, Cameron had to get funding from different partners. So if you think Fox reaped the full benefits of Avatars success, you'd be wrong.

edit: Titanic should technically be on that Fox list, Paramount ended up being the domestic distributor, but the movie was Fox/Cameron production. Fox only brought in Paramount to help because they had no faith in Cameron delivering with the movie. So again, another example of Fox being stupid, had they trusted Cameron, they would have reaped the full rewards of Titanics success.

I'm sorry, but that's just so overdramatic it's ridiculous! The implication that Fox is "destroying" anything is bullsh**. You're mad 'cause they didn't give you the comic book movies you wanted, and it's easy to single out Fox, because they've arguably put out a higher volume of films in recent memory, when just about every major studio has put out their fair share of bad comic book films.

And yes, my father spoke to a fox employee on an airplane who said that they would have went bankrupt if not for Avatar. Believe it.

Okay, I can't take you seriously if that statement is part of your argument. It cheapens whatever argument you're trying to make. It's the equivalent of high school gossip.

People seem to forget that much of the film industry and press thought Titanic would be a disaster. There was very little faith in the film during its production.
