The Gifted The Gifted General Discussion

Love hearing Polaris and Blink are standouts. They both (as well as the actresses involved) deserve it!

Those two were pretty much the main reasons I was excited for this. Glad they delivered!

They should be the stars of the show along with Sage and Thunderbird, not those made for TV characters!!!

More from those who watched the opening.

Getting to see the advanced screening of @TheGiftedonFOX was absolutely amazing, but now I have to wait a month for episode 2...

@TheGiftedonFOX Whoa! The episodes I saw tonight left me and the audience hanging. Can't wait for it to air! Good stuff!!!

Ahhh I hate cliff hangers! Sneak peak of the premier episode of @TheGiftedonFOX was amazing! How do I get access…

Honestly not just saying this because I'm an X-Stan, but #TheGifted truly has a great pilot. I am PRAYING the rest of the season holds up

She (Polaris) is prominent. I've never heard of her before, but she has cool powers.

@jamiechung1 @Marvel @TheGiftedonFOX love the show and the cast

Well they are apparently stealing the show in the version we are getting anyway. Also I think we need the made for TV characters to ground the show a bit. Plus there are some potentially cool things they could do with them as well. And the two kids are essentially slightly different versions from two comic book characters anyway. Who is to say that one of the family's 'secrets' they've hinted at won't link the parents to the comics as well? :woot:

Sounds great. Can't wait to see it!

Nope.

In my opinion, they should have went for a full mutant team from the comics instead of caring to develop characters that didn't come from the source material. They have thousands of characters to choose from. If they really want to sell this as a X-Men show then use X-Men characters.

Also, the marketing of this is uneven. First, it was the Strucker family in posters and other promotional items, but now that the premiere is coming so soon, they are showcasing the comic characters more.

And grounding the show would only lead to lower ratings. Heck there's not much activity in this section. And I'm sure more people would watch this if it has more characters from the comics .

The Struckers are from the comics. Fox doesn't have the rights to the dad, only the kids, so they had to change it up. Nix was inspired by District X, so I'm willing to give him a fair shake at doing something original and new with the material.

Lauren Strucker and Andy Strucker don't exist in the comics while they made it clear that Eclipse is a new character made up for this show and not the Age of X Sunspot.

Well their last name is obviously based on Fenris or the 'Von Strucker' twins to which Fox owns the right. There isn't much they could've done with those characters though. I'm still pretty sure that Lauren also borrows from Lauren Sherwood (Mantra), who has Elemental Control, Force Blast and Force Fields which are somewhat in line with the powers on the show. Storywise they probably won't use a thing, but they could still use the character for a sorcery angle.

Andy could just be an Americanized version of Andreas (Von Strucker), but I do like the theory that they've taken some of the ideas for his powers from Andy Maguire (Alpha). The rotating powerset could be a lot of fun, while the rule that he can only use one at a time keeps it budget friendly. I'll admit that there isn't much to go on there, but I do remember an interview about the scope of his powers being much bigger than we see in the Pilot. Vague, sure, but a man can dream? :woot:

Now, Fox probably owns the rights to neither Alpha or Mantra, but I still hope we can see Andy and Lauren move in those kind of directions. Since these aren't recognizeable characters like Polaris, Blink and Thunderbird, they'll have to make sure that the Struckers will stay interesting over time.

While they made it clear that Eclipse is a new character made up for this show and not the Age of X Sunspot.
Well of course they wouldn't literally make him a different version of Sunspot because that would just lead to unecessary confusion. Still, that's where the name and the inspiration for the powers come from. On top of that they just saw a chance to get creative and took it. We'll see how well Eclipse holds up. ;)

Think Natalie and Percy said that Andy can pull things apart, and Lauren can pull things together. She definitely has force fields and could be pulling from Mantra as well. Andy is obviously an Americanized Andreas von Strucker. The actors are reading comics with the Strucker twins though so they're obviously mining a certain bit of those characters for inspiration and guidance.

They are still made up characters. That's like if Fox introduces a character named Rosita Lebeau in a movie, it wouldn't be the film version of Gambit.

And if they are really the "struckers", the drastic change doesn't feel appropriate. The Struckers aren't characters that the public are supposed to root for.

Nah, Fox owns the rights to Gambit. They don't own the rights to Baron von Strucker, who appeared in Age of Ultron. This is the same as say, changing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch's origins because they don't have Magneto or Mutants. Or any other change that comes from adaptations.

We don't know if they're going to be characters to root for yet. They could end up bad guys, like the comics.

That is not quite how it works. Yes, some characters are 100% MCU owned, but some characters are shared rights characters two of them you named, we don't know about Strucker. Here is the thing though this not a Fox movie production its a Fox/Marvel joint television production where we have no idea if even the legal rules governing the movies are in effect. We know already some of them aren't as Marvel Television and Fox Television has to sign off on stuff the show does.

Anyway, Fox TV Poland and Fox TV Russia decided to pick up the show.

Fox TV Asia which has markets in several Asian countries including Japan, China, India and South Korea has up the advertisement for the show on their Facebook page. It looks like the opening will be quite global.

I think that'd actually be a pretty interesting direction for the characters to go in.

It is as a joint production as the first three films when Feige was representing for Marvel. But this is still very much a Fox production.

Legally Fox has much greater freedom to do what they want with the films after the agreement was signed then they do TV thanks to the results of the Mutant X lawsuit were they agreed for how they would share the television rights to the X-Men.

The point is this is still a Fox production.

The real joint production is something like Spider-Man homecoming.

True, but it's probably just the same as Bob, Agent of Hydra. They can't mention those aspects of the character because they don't have the rights to them, and thus they change it. As is with the Struckers I'm sure.

The comment about Bob actually made me want to check something about Viper (Madame Hydra) and then I actually saw that she has been on Agents of Shield as well. I actually haven't gotten all that far into the Ghost Rider episodes yet. So she is another character that the two companies share then. The Fox version was very much a character that (like the Struckers) barely resembled their comic book counterpart due to limitations with the rights tho.

In other news, Garret Dillahunt was cast Roderick Campbell aka Ahab. Honestly, if he were a good guy, it would make more sense than Fenris (has anyone read the Excalibur issues where he's in it?). That being said, even as a bad guy, it would be great. A reasonably deep pull for exactly what the show seems to be going for.
Garret is a great actor and I'm excited to see him return to Fox. This show obviously needs a stronger villain than Jace Turner, who is obviously a low level agent for Sentinel Services, so Ahab could be a great choice.

Recently got the new SFX Magazine and there is a page on The Gifted.

there isn't alot of new information but after Bryan made the first episode he imparted some words of wisdom, and they were "There is no way to make everyone happy. It's not going to happen"

Nix has taken this to heart and agreed "Certain comic-book fans want you to film the comics exactly the way they are"

Nix followed that with "That is not something you can do. there are certain things you just have to do for the sake of the story that you are telling. the pressure that i feel is this: I come to this knowing that there will ultimately be differences in opinion on how to approach the material. should polaris have a giant head of bright green hair? or is it ok if she has some green in her hair?"
